At Least He's Not Your State Party Treasurer... Oh Wait

So has anyone else heard how much is missing?

Administrators with the Adams County Democratic Party plan to turn over financial records to the Adams County sheriff later this week after a CBS4 Investigation revealed the party’s former treasurer is suspected of using political donations for personal expenses.

“There were definitely questionable things done that I would not have allowed to happen if I knew,” said Marty Wisniewski, the chairman of the Adams County Democratic Party, which he said takes in about $24,000 each year in contributions. “We’re finding more and more.”

Wisniewski indicated the former volunteer treasurer for the Adams County Democratic Party, Elmer “Butch” Hicks, is at the center of the controversy. Hicks went on to become treasurer for the Colorado Democratic Party, a position he abruptly resigned last week citing “personal reasons,” according to Pat Waak, Colorado Democratic Party Chair.

  1. You had Crystal Grey as Director of Parks & Rec who was also busted by CBS spending half her day shopping and having lunch with friends. (She’s still a member of the Boulder City Council – a proud symbol for us.)

And then you had their Director of Works(?) who I believe had to resign because of some major issues.

Maybe CBS should just put a permanent team in Adams County…

  2. I am shocked this is not getting covered more by the R’s.  I mean the guy was the state treasurer for the Dems.  Pat check your books and make sure he did not pay any bills!

The Donors should be appalled in Adam’s County and be calling for heads.

$24,000 is pretty high when not compared to Denver CO.

    1. Sample of some 2009 annual numbers:

      Adams $10,601.58

      Arapahoe: $48,857.17

      Boulder: $16,813.17

      Broomfield: $17,761.00

      Delta: 3,492.32

      Douglas: $30,742.43

      Jeffco: 72,177.30

      Mesa: $15,586.63

      Montrose: $9,700.00

      Routt: 7,035.25

Adams’ numbers are all over the map historically, as are all the counties. But in 2009 they did dismally. Slightly better than Montrose but not as good as Mesa.

Adams has had all kinds of problems, and Butch Hicks may well have been part of them, but my guess is all this auditing of 3 years ago is going on because a certain county chair is trying to cover his ass for failing to raise any money.

    2. Meaning that any checks written had to be signed off by two officers.

I could be wrong, but something in the back of mind recalls that conversation at a state Exec Committee at one time.

      1. However, I will confirm that the CDP requires two signatures on checks, and I am confident that no one person could remove money from the CDP accounts.  Further, there are other checks and balances in the system that would alert us to problems the moment they occurred.

And counties do differ wildly based on ability to fundraise and focus.  Here in Fremont County, which is much smaller than the metro counties (and rather Republican – around 5,000 registered Dems to nearly 10,000 registered Reps), we raised over $23,000 in 2009.
