A budding controversy involving the Oregon Republican Party, an ailing World War II veteran, and a loan for which nobody at party headquarters will pick up the phone–from the conservative NW Republican blog:
This may be one of the most difficult stories I have ever covered. It has difficulties on several levels. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I have always personally liked [Oregon Republican Party chairman] Bob Tiernan. Even to the point that around our household we affectionately refer to him as the “Bulldog.”
Then there is the “level” that effects so many good people working hard for the Oregon GOP.
And finally, what has become the most important level for me, the treatment of a man named Don Malarkey. Otherwise known as Sgt. Malarkey from “The Band of Brothers.”
…A few years back Don Malarkey and a few other donors “lent” the ORGOP some money to get through a rough financial spell. I spoke with Bob Tiernan briefly today and he was quite critical of the action from that time period as well as critical of the party Chair of that time. Chairman Tiernan believes it was not wise for the party to have borrowed money at that time.
That said, there was an obligation on the party’s books when Bob Tiernan took over…
But according to the latest update, there’s no plan to actually pay up–to this vet, or others who “loaned” the Oregon GOP money. To which we can only say, seriously? They can’t come up with a measely $20,000 to pay back a decorated veteran about to have open-heart surgery? If that isn’t enough to make you regret signing a letter in defense of RNC Chairman Michael Steele after the lesbian voyeurism nightclub expense scandal, which, goodness, it appears Chairman Tiernan did…well, Dick Wadhams (fellow signatory) would have handled this a little better we think hope.

If reading the old guy’s letters don’t break your heart, I don’t know what will.
What a story they (BOB) are, and what giant pieces of shit the R’s up there are for not having already taken care of this.
I didn’t even know there was a GOP in Oregon…
Man, I’d love to pile on over this, but this one story so horrible I can’t.
Shit, I’ll send the Oregon GOP a donation, if they’ll promise to use it to pay back this Airborne NCO…
Can you get me an address, I’d be happy to send something.
But I see an address on one of his letters for:
Donald G. Malarkey
2495 East Nob Hill, SE
Salem, OR 97302
pay back the party? I don’t know national party laws and rules. I’m not even sure that would be legal.
I guess their lack of funding explains why none of us were aware there was a GOP party in Oregon.
…is that he already has his money from a wealthy GOP’r.
Now, the DNC should have been really smart and paid him.
every Republican alive would have called it a cheap political ploy.
I just hope somebody paid this guy back.
Hey, Gordon Smith was a Republican Senator from Oregon from 1997 to 2009, until he lost his re-election.
Of course, there was Bob Packwood, too.

There’s an internal letter than went out a week ago to members of the Central Committee and it looks to me like Bob Tierman is about to be ex-Chairman here shortly.
Reading that letter, I’m surprised BT isn’t run out of town on a rail.
If he didn’t get the right care at the VA, or he didn’t get a medal he served, fine.
But being a vet has ZERO to do with the stupidity of loaning money to a political party.
..if it weren’t for the fact that an 80-sumthin’ War Hero is out almost $28K because he chose to believe that the head of a political organization would pay him back.
And it wasn’t just one guy who he listened to – based on the letters posted above, the entire GOP machine of Oregon either bought the same bullshit or relayed it to others.
I think this proves that the senior leadership of the Republican’t Party, regardless of geographic location, is run by cold-hearted crooked bastards who will lie, cheat and steal to accomplish their political goals.
But I cannot fault a vet (who’s values were forged in a different time) for following his deep political beliefs and doing what he thought would help his Party. (See the line about the 2005-2008 stretch for the GOP)
I hope Bob Tierman gets tarred, feathered and run out of town. I hope the Oregon GOP gets equally brutalized in the Press, because they chose this stinking piece of shit as their Chairman, and gleefully ignored their duties of oversight while he drug their Party into this shithole.
But I have some serious respect for SGT Malarkey, because while it may have been stupid to trust these cocksuckers with his money, he still had enough faith in his political values to do what he thought was right.
And I hope he sues the shit out of these bastards, and repossess their dreams…
That’s a pretty unfair characterization.
That seems a little over the top for what looks to be a single moron taking advantage of someone.
…because you certainly don’t have any doubts about chuckling with glee whenever you find out some blurb on the interwebz about your two favorite subjects.
A year ago I was willing to give those liars and thieves who run the GOP the benefit of the doubt, because I kept meeting enough rank ‘n file Repubs that didn’t seem to share their crooked ways.
I’m done now.
I scammed you out of a beer for a tie…
…if you were, I’d expect a much better and more successful election season for that Party.
And I’m pretty sure if you were running the Oregon GOP, you’d have SGT Malarkey paid off immediately AND thrown him a thank-you dinner.
And I’m proud to owe you a beer…I guess the irony of it is finding a date to pay off…
