At Least It's Not Your...Whole State: South Carolina Edition

This is not about the series of infidelities gripping the GOP establishment (Sanford, Nikki Haley), but rather what one GOP legislator said about GOP candidate for governor, Nikki Haley.

With a bead of sweat rolling down the side of his face outside a Columbia bar, Republican S.C. Sen. Jake Knotts called Lexington Rep. Nikki Haley, an Indian-American Republican woman running for governor, a “raghead” several times while explaining how he believed she was hiding her true religion from voters.

“She’s a f#!king raghead,” Knotts said.

He later clarified his statement. He did not mean to use the F-word.

Knotts says he believed Haley has been set up by a network of Sikhs and was programmed to run for governor of South Carolina by outside influences in foreign countries. He claims she is hiding her religion and he wants the voters to know about it.

“We got a raghead in Washington; we don’t need one in South Carolina,” Knotts said more than once. “She’s a raghead that’s ashamed of her religion trying to hid it behind being Methodist for political reasons.”

“This isn’t the first time I’ve said it,” Knotts said. “I’m not on a crusade to downgrade her, but if someone asks me I’ll tell ’em. And look here, someone wants to vote for her knowing the truth, vote for her.”

Knotts said that South Carolina is a religious community.

“We need a good Christian to be our governor,” he said. “She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”

Knotts says he believes Haley’s father has been sending letters to India saying that Haley is the first Sikh running for high office in America. He says her father walks around Lexington wearing a turban.

“We’re at war over there,” Knotts said.

Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with “foreign countries.”

Of course he meant it as a joke

Knotts later apologized for his comments, which showed up in the morning papers.

“My ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest,” Knotts said in a statement. “Bear in mind that this is a freewheeling, anything-goes Internet radio show that is broadcast from a pub. It’s like local political version of Saturday Night Live.”

Riiiight. Even though by his own admission “This isn’t the first time I’ve said it,”

      1. In fact the only thing that makes me think the affair allegations against Haley are false is that South Carolina conservatives will literally make any shit up at all to win an election. (Most notoriously the stuff about McCain’s adopted daughter.)

If this all turns out to be cooked up based on old-fashioned Southern stereotypes about promiscuous brown-skinned women, it wouldn’t shock me. Then again, it wouldn’t shock me if it was all true either.

Truly it’s the worst state in the country.

  1. He claimed it was a “joke” (newsflash for racist Republicans: a joke is something you don’t actually mean) and that it was borrowed from Saturday Night Live.

In other South Carolina news, Nikki Haley has said that she would resign if she were elected governor and evidence of her extramarital affairs came out. Now South Carolina voters have exactly one precedent for this situation, and that’s kind of the opposite of what happened.

Just how gullible are South Carolina voters? On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being South Carolina…oh wait.

  2. Knotts should hire the demon sheep/alabama drivers ed english/alabama i’ll hunt you down with my gun and hope he goes viral.

We can add “I’ll get rid of my raghead opponent” to the above list.

  3. …further evidence of how global warming has impacted homo sapien republican’tis in South Carolina, i.e. broiling their brains to a soft mushy substance?

No wonder they don’t believe in evolution — no evidence of it that they can see among their golfing buddies at the Charleston Country Club!

      1. ….but as a Muslim with brown skin, I would prefer to be called “f****** idiot” over “f****** raghead”

Nikki ain’t even Muslim, but she’s taking the same arrows – I’m probably gonna contribute to her – Go Nikki!!!

    1. He could have been dropping the f-bomb all night long in the bar, before the toxins oozed out of his pores and mouth, once outside the establishment.

  4. I like it when Republicans attack their own in this manner.  This is the party she chose to belong to, so what does she expect?  Afterall, they are not know for their tolerance….
