A call for Unity

(This seems a worthy airing of the Republican viewpoint. – promoted by Voyageur)

Its that time that Republicans across the state come together and end this primary squabble for the greater good of forming a united front to get a Republican into the Governor’s office.  All the signs show that Scott McInnis will beat Dan Maes soundly in the primary.  He is leading Dan by 20+ points in the latest head to head poll.  Scott has outpaced Dan in fundraising $1.8 million to $119,000 as of June 1st. These numbers just do not signal a victory in August.

John Hickenlooper is running unopposed and just sitting on his cash as Scott and Dan spend money on a primary.  This is tough because it really drains the resources that should be used against Hickenlooper in November.  Hickenlooper has also run into some bad press lately but because the party is divided we have not been able to properly exploit this to our advantage.

The goal of all Republicans is to get a Republican back into office in November so that they will return this state to the prosperity it so desperately needs.  A real fiscal conservative in office is what we need.  A Republican that will stand up for conservative values.  By fighting out a primary we are hurting our own cause by giving Hickenlooper a free pass and also helping him create his campaign for November with this infighting.

The time is right to unite under the man that has the best chance to beat Hickenlooper in November and that man is Scott McInnis.  Dan has run a great campaign and has really energized an important group of conservatives and we thank you for that but it is time to consider what is best for the party and that is getting a Republican in the Governor’s office.  To do this we need unity BEFORE the primary.  Dan its time to drop out and help support the greater cause and make sure we can beat Hickenlooper in November.

  1. Being a DC-insider millionaire lawyer lobbyist is the true GOP.

But why does Scooter want to force private business to behave against their economic self-interest?  How is that ‘conservative’?  Or do you mean by ‘conservative’ groveling at the feet of powerful corporate interests?

    1. Force private business to behave against their economic self-interest

I dunno where you got this but that is ridiculous.  Scott is about providing incentives for business in order to bring prosperity back to the state.  Could you explain what you mean and shed some light on that statement?

      1. change the disparity between the cost of developing nat gas from shale plays vs. the Piceance’s tight sands?

Does Scooter support forcing companies to drill in CO against this disparity?  Or is he just a liar?

      2. giving United any incentives to move their facility to Colorado?

I actually prefer politicians who work on infrastructure and providing superior educational opportunities so that businesses will be attracted to the skilled workforce.

Providing incentives like the destruction of reasonable regulations so that unethical companies are given the green light to rape our land isn’t the kind of leadership that I want in the governors mansion.  Ritter was the man to stake out green technology as a profitable business model and it is coming to fruition.  Republicans don’t have the vision to see beyond fossil fuels and the extraction industries for sustainable new businesses.

The more realistic probability is that McInnis will be politically depleted even before he gets in the ring with Hickenlooper.  He will endure a thousand cuts by his own party so isn’t going to be pretty between now and August.

Democrats on the other hand need to be aware of the health risks of watching this dogfight.  Eating so much popcorn with butter can be fattening.

  2. You really haven’t been paying attention this season, have you? The goal of many, if not most Republicans is an ideological purge of RINOs, including those who supported Ref C or who were for immigration reform before they were against it or got drunk from the Potomac.

    1. I think many of the ultra conservatives see it as far more beneficial in the long run to rid the party of RINOs (& Ref. C supporters) than win in November.

      1. That’s why Republicans have had so much trouble in Colorado in recent years. Winning has been secondary to standing behind the most conservative candidate — even if that candidate is not well-suited to win a General Election. There’s no better example of that this year than Dan Maes himself. Maes cannot win a General Election, but Republicans supported him at the state convention instead of McInnis.

      1. Yesterday someone mentioned Ritter Republicans in a different story line (which is true).  There have also been Salazar Republicans (John) and Buescher Republicans for different reasons.  That’s why the ultra conservatives want to purge all RINOs or those that would dare vote anything other than the party line.

As the saying goes “there is none so blind as those who will not see.”

        1. Just because you read a comment that claims that Bill Ritter enjoyed Republican support doesn’t mean that it is true.

Ritter won the election by winning over the moderates.  I don’t know of any Republicans who have ever had anything good to say about Ritter.  The Republican Party was still employing post 9/11 fear mongering at all levels of politics in 2006 so crossing over and voting for a wimpy Denver DA was about the last thing a good Republican would do.  I think this is revisionist crap to make it look like Democrats need to court hard core Republicans by abandoning progressive positions to win.  Democrats shouldn’t fall for this false history.  Democrats win when they focus on solutions to the issues and ignore the extremists in their own party.

  3. Is “Thank you for Playing Dan, but the big boys have already decided against you”?

Wow, whatever happened to primary elections being decided by the voters?

Or is it just possible that Mr. McInnis is seeing way to much competition and energy on the side of Dan Maes and he is getting a little nervous?

So how’s that top line on the ballot treating you?  Oh wait… nevermind, I had forgotten the the McInnis Machine got beaten at the Assembly.

        1. I swear I don’t know him.  Besides I have it on good authority that he hates the Raiders, actually I think he is a Chief’s fan…

    1. Let the voters decide.

Democrats will get their chance in the senate primary.  It is an excellent way to articulate intra-party differences and decide party direction.

Take it to the primary Dan.

      You can do it grasshopper.

The big big factor will be his fund raising totals for last quarter.  Will the stingy Tea Party supporters vote with their wallets for Maes and send a message to McInnis that he needs to campaign away from the middle and even more extreme right to get their vote in the primary and forget about the general for now.

  4. This argument comes up every election season and it is just silly. We need to have a primary so that we get the best candidate to face the dems in the fall. If McInnis is that candidate, great. If Maes is, then he will win. But to suppress a vote by the Republican primary electorate is just dumb. Look at what happened in 2008 – Obama and Hillary had a nasty primary and yet he overwhelmingly won in the general election. Heated primaries do not necessarily equal failure in November.

      1. some support AR but there has been very little “squealing” about the fact of a primary. AR folks love it. Bennet folks see it as an exercise in futility.  But mostly, on both sides, we’ve just been thumping our chests about how our guy is going to win. Your rivalries have been much, much more entertaining for all of us, Bennet and AR fans alike.

        1. I was very happy to hear that someone was going to challenge him in the primary. I didn’t know who Andrew was, being from out of state, but felt that an appointed Senator should absolutely being challenged and earn the seat. Whether you are a Romanoff or Bennet supporter the primary should be heated but seems fairly usual. I find this talk of Romanoff supporters sitting out if their guy loses very disturbing but that’s probably a subject for another diary. The Republican primary and it’s players seem anything but usual. Should be interesting!

        2. Our rivalries have been much more entertaining but the fact is that the more entertaining they are the better it is for Hickenlooper and thus why I believe it is best to unite so that the primary doesn’t become more interesting.

      2. I am a Bennet supporter. I also like AR, I just wish he had not chosen to run. Since he has made that choice we’ll have to campaign for our candidate and help the publc see that, though not elected, Bennet is every bit as good, likely better, than AR. Let the best candidate win. I’ll support the winner just as energetically as I support Bennet presently.

      3. any more than the Ds want the GOP to unify behind Scooter.   But I actually think the primary is honing Bennet’s skills — he’s much more effective now.  McInnis, in contrast, is a veteran of many a campaign and benefits less from the tune-up.

Still, I agree that Maes people have a right to vote for their guy.   I promoted this diary because I thought it raised solid issues and think the discussion — including thoughtful comments such as yours, is good.

    1. I think that we can agree that a long drawn out primary helps Hickenlooper.  And I think that we can both agree that we both want the Republicans in office and not Hickenlooper.  If Maes stays in the race he is essentially helping Hickenlooper as he hurts the chances of the Republicans and therefore advances a cause that he does not support.  Just a personal opinion but it seems that Maes is content to take it to the primary and that is his right and in no way would I hinder that.  Just a thought.

      1. Actually I should clarify, I’m not sure who I’ll vote for yet. But I think it is good to have a primary so we can get to know the strengths and weaknesses of both candidates.

          1. Yes- but not as hard as being in office.

The guy can’t manage what little budget he’s got without breaking the law.  What makes anyone think he could manage the state budget?

His biggest weakness is his arrogance and lack of experience.

          2. care much about the minutiae of campaign finance rules. They’re so complicated these days that FEC complaints are a standard part of a campaign.

            1. about the details. But “biggest fine ever against a Colorado candidate for campaign violations” kind of cuts through the clutter.

                  1. but unlike BJ, instead of wallowing in my ignorance I will ask for some enlightenment. What does n/t stand for on posts? I keep seeing it both on this site and on Twitter. I assume it means the same thing in both places.

                    1. It’s a courtesy to the reader that there’s only a title, no text below.

In ham radio, it can also mean “no traffic,” which means essentially the same thing.

    2. I read you railing against establishment candidates but can you please define what an establishment candidate is.  I know you believe that McInnis and Norton are team establishment but what qualities do they possess to be in there?  I honestly would like to know please.

      1. Like your style though I’m sure we disagree on most everything from a policy point of view. Hope to see you here often. Good luck with getting an answer to your query. I’ve yet to receive one directly related to any of mine from that individual.

      2. A lot of it is who knows who in the party. Although in the case of Norton, the problem is the national establishment (Cornyn, NRSC, John McCain, etc.) and the D.C. lobbyists from which she gets the money to keep her campaign alive. Search for her donors at the FEC website.
