This ad from WOMEN VOTE! began airing today, highlighting CD-4 candidate Cory Gardner’s votes against education funding, health insurance mandates to cover children with autism, as well as his vote against a bill that would have intercepted gambling winnings from fathers who owe child support–here’s the script with supporting links.
Politico’s Alexander Burns reports on the buy, and strategy behind the ad:
Women Vote! will spend $300,000 on television advertising in Markey’s district over the next three weeks, targeting female viewers with a spot that puts Gardner, a state legislator, on the defensive over his voting record. The ad shows Gardner’s face getting gradually colored in against a dark background, as the narrator asks: “Have you taken a good look at Cory Gardner?”
“On health care, Gardner voted to allow insurance companies to deny coverage to children with autism,” the script continues. “Gardner even voted against cracking down on deadbeat dads that skip child support payments. When you fill in the picture, it’s clear that Cory Gardner is wrong for us.”
Markey, a freshman member of Congress who voted for health care reform earlier this year, is only the first beneficiary of what EMILY’s List expects will be a broad campaign to define this year’s top races in stark terms.

1. He voted against the School Finance Acts, the big bills Democrats doctored up in different ways.
2. Liberals abuse the most defenseless by turning them into weapons against their political enemies. This was not unsympathetic to children, it was respectful of the costs everyone must pay for insurance. Democrat mandates are forcing up the cost of coverage.
3. Emotional manipulation like #2. And I remember reading that it places a big burden on casinos to do this check.
“Bills the Democrats doctored”–your assertion, no facts cited.
“Liberals abuse the most defenseless” — whose words? Yours? Cite facts. Somebody else’s? Cite a quite.
“I remember reading”–Where? It should be easy enough to cite.
GOPChickenhawk–You are your own fact-free zone.
Quote, not quite.
the gambling lobby.
who just shaft them completely while worshiping the rich. Republicans always step over Lazarus to give the feasting rich man a tax cut. There is nothing noble is idolizing the rich either. My wife was involved in the county food bank and you are absolutely full of bullshit if you think government helps the poor for political reasons. My wife gave a food box to a young single mom who had been feeding her child Ramen Noodles and Saltine Crackers. It was a government assistance program that helped her improve the nutrition of her child and gave her someplace to turn to for help with her job search. All the pompous pronouncements about how Pro-Life they are is revealed to be nothing more than a mask of indifference to those who really need help in this life. I’ll take Democratic caring for the living poor over the hypocritical rage over the unborn by ugly and dishonest Republicans any day.
Your last sentence is a definite keeper. The shorter version is the bumper sticker on a friend’s car:
Next thing you know, they’ll be wanting jobs. And their own credit cards.
And I had no idea there was a plan for autistic child missiles.
The cost for insuring kids under 18 is trivial, and making sure they have access to quality health care is a good investment in the future. Made me sick when the legislators voted against it. Wondered if anyone would hold their feet to the fire.
Money spent covering kid’s healthcare needs outside of the GOP favored ER as universal health care system is a huge money saver.
I could see the argument being made against education funds and mandates on health coverage of children with autism (I wouldn’t agree with them, but I could see a defensible argument being made); but not intercepting gambling winnings for child support? That is the one that appears to me to be indefensible….any of the loyal opposition care to take a stab at that for me?
If they forced the state to spend money it doesn’t have, is it so bad to vote against them?
Even great bills deserve to die if you can’t pay for them.
Betsy Markey’s internal polls must show her seriously behind.
Frankly, this only gives Gardner name recognition. They mention his name 5 times in thrity seconds and his name is on the screen for almost the entire thirty seconds. Very few outside this web site knows who he is. Why the idiots from outside Colorado would give this guy name recognition which otherwise he would have to pay for, I don’t know. Also, does anyone outside of those on this site remember what he is running for. I have to admit that I had to stop for a second and think about who Gardner is.
That’s where he’s running, and yes, lots of people in this congressional district already know who he is. Putting his voting record out there now is a good thing, esp. right after his fundraiser with a BP lobbyist made the news.
She’s still going to get her ass kicked (electorally) simply for voting for ObamacareВ®.
The Republicans think the fall elections will put them back in control of the House and Senate. Here is what we have to look forward to if that occurs:
Rollling back the Democratic health care reform–like the Republicans ever had a plan, other than don’t get sick. Cut Veterans benefits. After all you know all those post-traumatic stress war heroes are just faking it.
Pulling the plug on Grandma, with the privatizing of Social Security Insurance. Don’t look now, but the Republicans will put your Social Security payments into the Wall Street stock market. Like that worked out well for them before.
Rolling back clean air and water legislation, canning “cap and trade,” and reducing environmental regulations to allow big business to profit and ramping up pollution to no end.
Reversing any gains on slowing global warming. Oh right, that’s just a hoax. Too bad Republicans can’t fathom the scientific evidence to the contrary.
Extending tax cuts–but only for the top 2% of Americans, those earning more than $250,000 per year. The regular people will have their taxes go up–after all, the wealthy in this country have always made their fortunes on the backs of the working poor.
Passing legislation to stall green energy research and development–after all, there is still plenty of oil available–too bad they can’t scoop it out of the Gulf. And the Republicans rely on those big corporate donations!
Ramping up expenditures for privatizing the military; after all, Blackwater employees still have to make a living, too. Too bad they give the American soldier the shaft.
Destroy the Department of Education, because everyone knows teachers are really just babysitters, and their jobs don’t need protection.
Besides, Republicans prefer to home school.
Creating a constitutional amendment to make America a “Christian nation.” This would make Christian prayer (but not any other religious prayers) in public schools mandatory, because everyone knows kids taking tests in school are praying anyway.
Roll back women’s right to choose, ban gay marriage, and otherwise butt their noses into the private lives of Americans who aren’t exactly like themselves.
Dodge the immigration reform bill by increasing the hiring of illegals so private corporations can increase their profits. No wait, that’s just as it’s always been.
Get us into another war. Maybe those weapons of mass destruction are in the Arctic! Blow up the North Pole, and increase polar ice-cap melting just to show those dang Democrats that Sarah Palin’s shooting of polar bears from airplanes may be the only sporting chance they have.
Gosh, with Republicans back in control, won’t America be worse off like before? Don’t be dumb. Vote for Democrats.
