Hick: A Cut in Services or Simply More Efficiency?

  • by: KinCO

Hick came out with his second ad yesterday, following up on the theme that Sirota wisely pointed out last week: “cut government spending.”  However, he had a slightly different message in the ad “Cheap,” which was “more government efficiency.”

It may seem like an insignificant nuance, but there is a big difference to “cut government spending” and “make government more efficient.” As the campaign proceeds, we will hopefully find out more about Hick’s ideas.  After all, we always want to hold the Republicans’ feet to the fire about specific areas they will cut if they pledge to cut government spending, I suppose we need to do the same to Hick.

More follows:

I’m all for efficiency, sweaters, and tap water, but we’re talking hundreds of millions of dollars.  Hick, are you going to cut government services, or just brilliantly make Colorado government even more efficient?  I remind you that Colorado has already been cutting and cutting for years.

Maybe Hick doesn’t realize that we’ve already cut hundreds of millions from K-12 education, and we are about to fund our higher education at a lower level than we did ten years ago, or that as the down economy drags on, more and more folks are turning to the state for Medicaid, unemployment, food stamps, and other human services?  Or that Colorado already ranks 48th in state government taxation?

So, I am kinda really looking for an answer. Does Hick intend to cut government spending with cuts to government services, or will lowering the thermostat suffice?

Why he is going down this road politically is a whole other question…

  1. First of all, saying Sirota wisely pointed something out is just silly.

Second, do you really expect Hickenlooper to drastically reduce spending and the size government during his term? Has he ever said or shown that he is that kind of candidate?

    Third, you said,

we always want to hold the Republicans’ feet to the fire about specific areas they will cut if they pledge to cut government spending, I suppose we need to do the same to Hick.

No, we really don’t. Unless you’re a Republican in disguise or a left winger worried about a moderate candidate.

If you aren’t one of the above, let it go. They’re fun commercials designed to reach out to moderate voters in a moderate state.

    Sheesh.

  2. but this isn’t the message I want to hear from the potential next governor.

Any focus group of administrative assistants can come up with all of those cost saving measures (in fact, they probably did) plus some — flourescent light bulbs, automatic room shut-off switches, refillable pens, empty your own garbage cans, etc., etc.

This is not what a governor does, or should be doing.  I want to know how the next governor is going to fund roads and infrastructure — not that he put ethanol in his car.  I want to know how the next governor is going to help make Colorado more attractive for jobs creation.  I want to know how how the next governor is going to fund education and job training.

Yeah, Hick is going to have to cut spending, but so would any other governor.  So, what the hell else is he going to do?

We already get that Hick’ is likable and quirky, but this commercial is too cute by half and does absolutely nothing to make me want to vote for the man.  It’s time for Hick to seriously consider getting serious about being governor.

    1. The amount the government spends is what it is to me. What appalls me is the amount of wasteful spending that is typical in any given governement office.

Since I do temp work, I move around amongst city (Denver) and state offices, I see this everyday. I see very few offices where processes could not use some streamlining to save time and money, especially money.

The fact that Hick recognizes this issue, and not JUST the buzz words, “Cut spending” really heightens my opinion of him. And my opinion of him was not particularly positive going into this election.

Ads like this and the pledge to no negative campaigning (shower ad) are starting to move him from “lesser of the evils” to someone I may be able to warm up to by Nov.
