Does it strike anyone else that while certainly nice to build these trains here with American labor, it is still foreign owned?  And probably a huge part of upper management will be German, if our Japanese car building in America experience holds true.  And profits head off to Tokyo or Dresden or wherever unless tax laws discourage that (NOT!) or the company is enlightened.

    Now, don’t get me wrong, I’d much rather see foreign investment in America than just sending us the goods.

    But I guess I want it all.  Like it used to be.  American companies, American labor, American consumers of same products.  

        1. Mass civilian casualties. People cooked as they tried to escape into the canals. Pavement boiled. Mass destruction against the Geneva Conventions and all moral standards, even for war.  

          A real blot on the image of America as a good nation in war. (Whatever that is!)

          2. why Dresden is more infamous than all the other firebombed cities? There weren’t any major German or Japanese cities that weren’t firebombed as far as I know. As a matter of fact, while the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were horrifying, fewer people were killed in those raids than in one night in Tokyo.

    3. mainly because the filthy rich who own everything are pretty international in their earning and their spending, so whether they’re American or not, they likely are paying little to no taxes to our governments, and they are likely spending as much abroad as they do here even if they don’t live here.

        Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna Inc. and others will halt new child-only policies in California, Illinois, Florida, Connecticut and elsewhere as early as Thursday when provisions of the nation’s new healthcare law take effect, including a requirement that insurers cover children under age 19 regardless of their health histories.

  6. So, eight City Council members from Bell, CA are arrested on corruption charges.  This is the group that paid city managers, etc. into the high six figures, far above national averages for a city that size.

    Newsbusters took a look at it, and lo and behold, the non-biased media just plum forgot to mention that all were Dems.  I’m shocked I tell you – shocked!

    Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled “corruption on steroids.” Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats.

    These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner.

    ABC, CBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests today without mentioning party affiliations.

        On CO Pols there have been an uncountable number of posts highlighting a Republican’s transgressions/ethical lapses/hikes in old eroding mountain ranges/etc. And the tendency in these posts is to tar the entire Republican brand for these actions of the few ok, it’s many. 😉

        Thus, I can see the humor in LB’s pointing out the political affiliation of the Bell CA Baddies – and he was honored with the kneejerk response that I bet he was expecting.

        On the other hand, these folks are all Californians, so regardless of their party affiliations, they are intrinsically evil.

        On the third hand, really, LB, you don’t need to stoop to poor grammar. In your case, it is a distraction.

    Awhile back there was lots of gnashing and snarling about a certain candidate’s practice on his way from the office of sliding past a townhouse in a far off place to pocket contributions for his campaign. The news angle was that his then-leading opponent was using the same townhouse! Long forgotten — or not, as the case may be.

    What struck me about the voice mail above wasn’t the contents–expected from both sides, to be sure–but the gross stupidity of the wording. If nothing else, the sender deserves to be defeated on simple grounds that s/he is too stupid to be influencing legislation!

    Democracy? Government that derives its powers from the consent of the governed? That’s so 5th grade history.

    Corporatocracy is the word we want now, rights fully protected, just as it says there in the Immutable Immortal Divine Document. And, comrades, let’s not pretend it isn’t done equally on both sides, so kindly don’t inflate everyone’s electric bill by suggesting that this is a partisan issue.

    Think party labels mean something? I don’t either.

    If we can get propositions with numbers in the 60s on the ballot, why not Proposition One: NO CORPORATE CONTRIBUTIONS FOR CANDIDATES FOR PUBLIC OFFICE on penalty of having your executive washroom key taken away for a week! And if the Supremes insist it requires an amendment, well, if amend we must, amend we shall. Gentlemen, start your amenders. Vroom, vroom.

      I have never been a fan of presidents who place blame on their predecessors or who accept credit for events that couldn’t have been engineered so soon in their tenure. Politicians will always massage the data to tell the story their way. Bill Clinton’s happy economy surely owed some credit to Reagan. George W. Bush’s ill fortunes surely had at least some of their roots in Clinton’s lack of attentiveness. Obama clearly inherited a load of fertilizer, but his policies also have exacerbated those effects. Obama’s successor most certainly will benefit or suffer to some degree from seeds the current president planted.

      Nevertheless, it is probably fair to say that Obama’s ideas were too big for America’s appetite. It would have been nice had he made a few incremental repairs to the economy and left the transformative events for a less stressful time.
