A conservative talk radio host and former spokeswoman for a failed effort to recall Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) is helping spread the word about MayDay-Colorado.com, which is encouraging Colorado businesses to open May 1, whether or not they have government authorization to do so.
Karen Kataline appeared this morning on conservative 710-AM radio to urge listeners to promote MayDay-Colorado and watch for the initiative’s banner at a drive-by “gridlock” rally in downtown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19.
“Guess what? We are opening for business on May Day, the old socialist holiday,” said Kataline on air. “We are taking it back, and we don’t need the governor’s permission. We are on solid constitutional ground.”
There’s no evidence that Polis’ order to shut down non-essential businesses to protect public health faces any serious constitutional challenge.
A MayDay-Colorado flyer available for download states: “Business Independence Day” and “MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Save our Liberty. Save our Economy.”
Kataline said people should drive by the “gridlock” protest tomorrow and view the banner.
Kataline, who substitutes for regular hosts on talk radio stations in the metro area, said last month that the response to the virus has been marked by hysteria.
Polis has said that if the virus were to run rampant, it would do more damage to the economy than the efforts to try to fight it, as Colorado is doing.
Reached by phone, Kataline said she is not a spokeswoman for the group. She called the radio show to get the word out, she said.
Greg Lopez, a former mayor of Parker who’s already announced his candidacy to oppose Polis in the next gubernatorial election, came up with the idea to push back with small businesses and open May 1 regardless of state directives, said Kataline. She also said social distancing would be respected.
Lopez did not immediately return a call for comment.

Huh… when I saw Lopez campaigning for Governor, he seemed conservative, but not an extreme RWNJ. Struck me as more of the "let's do government well," Chamber of Commerce sort — not one to sign on to "liberate" small businesses from health orders.
Must be figuring that he needs to go for the right wing as he chases the nomination for 2022.
Lopez has been chasing the right wingnut vote since he became a Republican at age 27. Sample Lopez brain farts: to fix partisanship, sit at a round table. Instead of funding education or repealing TABOR to automatically fund education, spend money looking for fraud and abuse in government. Open carry guns everywhere. Government can’t solve problems; Government is the problem. Domestic violence is a private matter ( at least when a Lopez commits it).
At his April 14 Assembly speech, Lopez ripped into “sanctuary cities” and abortion, thus feeding the right wing Republicans the red meat they craved, and as a bonus, deflecting charges of Republican racism by virtue of his own background.
The Colorado Independent wrote a good background piece on Lopez in 2018. His answers to the Indy’s questionnaire place him squarely in RMGO nutball country.
If domestic violence is to be a "private matter," then abortion also is a private matter.
^^^this^^^
Wrong analogy my friend. A woman's health care decisions are a private matter. Domestic violence is a social disease with real victims.
GG: you missed my sarcasm. And I said "If….."
My bad CB. Snarkometer was off yesterday. Will try to fix it myself but might have to wait until I can get it into the shop.
Memo to Karen Kataline: feel free to sneak into the nearest nursing home and breathe the air, without a mask. Enjoy what happens to you a few days later.
“Thin the herd for November third”? They seem hell-bent on the idea.
That's catchy! Don't encourage them.
What chb said. Let Darwin do his job!
Too late for Darwin.
Unlike the 1918 pandemic, this hits those that have already reproduced.
Stupid people breed more . . .
. . . there’s nothing wrong with Darwin’s theory. It’s not, and never was, survival of the fittest – the smartest; that’s just our conceit and ignorance. It’s survival of the breederest.
"Greg Lopez, ..announced his candidacy to oppose Polis in the next gubernatorial election,"
So, when is the Big Line going to be updated?
It is never too soon.
On March 25, Gov. Polis issued Colorado’s shelter-in-place order. The two days prior to that Colorado had new confirmed case counts jump up significantly to 189 (on March 23), and 175 (on March 24). Total confirmed cases on March 24 were 1,081.
New cases as reported for the last seven days for which we have the most current information available:

Unless, or until, the Ttumpettes get the attention of The Chosen One to ramp up testing, as opposed to hunching, this doesn’t get better.
Pissed? You bet — let me count the ways : Inadequate preparation, inadequate needed supplies and facilities, inadequate testing efforts and availability, magical thinking, lack of intelligence, no serious coordination or effort to address any of these issues, inability to make any effort beyond rank amateur showmanship, a massive program of diversion of needed resources to personal and political graft and cronyism, etc., etc., . . .
Pissed? Yeah! Everyone’s pissed! Be pissed at the problem —the massive failure of a moron and his inept slathering circus of toadies to do their jobs, or at just the very least to get out of the way of, and stop interfering with, the people doing the real work to try to save this country.
So, “Save our Liberty. Save our Economy”? I’m with you. The problem, the main problem, the #1 problem is, was, and will continue to be, Ttump, Ttump, and Ttump, brothers and sisters! Everything else is just symptoms of the Ttump disease and pandemic . . .
I recall a Stallone line from a 1980s movie, Cobra, where he told a bad guy: "you're the disease and I'm the cure." Paraphrasing……..
"Trump is the disease and voting on Nov. 3 is the cure."
I'm thinking a fitting place for the hospital beds of these science denying, government hating, forever Trumpers would be in the parking lot.
