Ouch! That's going to leave a mark.

In predictable fashion, the Fort Collins Coloradoan endorses… wha?!? Yep, you read that right, they just endorsed Ken Buck for U.S. Senate.

http://www.coloradoan.com/arti…

Their analysis pretty much confirms my reasoning here as to why I think Ken Buck will ultimately prevail:

While it is irrefutable that Buck, a Republican, has offered some bone-headed sound bites, e.g., high heels, alcoholism and homosexuality, etc., voters are encouraged to take a little more time to hear where he stands on health-care reform, reducing the deficit, higher-education loans, Social Security and growing the economy. Frankly put, Buck excels beyond appointed incumbent Michael Bennet in articulating a clear path toward solutions.

Their are a few other items to note as well. Buck comes out surprisingly strong on healthcare, not a typical area of strength for Republicans.

On health care, he points out that Republicans waited too long to address reforms, which led to the Democratic plan. He believes the health-care plan is flawed because of the individual mandate for insurance, a business-choking 1099 tax-form requirement and its inability to support successful approaches. He would like to introduce more free-market principles to allow for innovative solutions, supports health savings accounts and seeks transparency on costs of health procedures to allow for consumer comparisons.

He is also more in line with mainstream views on partisanship in congress and the war in Afghanistan than typical Republicans.

The Weld County district attorney is refreshingly honest when stating that both Republicans and Democrats are to blame for the growing federal deficit and economic uncertainty. Unlike many of his fellow Republicans, Buck believes that the United States should reduce its role in Afghanistan.

I couldn’t be more proud of my normally left of center hometown newspaper.

      1. coming out on Sunday. As many have already pointed out, the poll was probably conducted before Buck started imploding, so if H-man wants to take it to the bank, he’s welcome to it.

          1. RCP average has Buck up by 1 and remember this is before polling the results of Buck’s “buyer’s alcoholic remorse” day last Sunday.

Plus after just getting back from event with Michael I have 3 letters for you that should cause you to not sleep well between now and election day:

            OFA

            1. Over For Abama?

              Obama F’ed America?

What should cause you not to sleep well is the release of info from the Secretary of State on votes so far by party.  Republicans up by over 10K on 190K votes so far. Republicans ahead in 3 of the 4 largest counties and 3 of the next 5 largest counties?  What is the Dems strategy? Do you think they are going to win rural Colorado?

              1. over-performed in early voting in Colorado. The early vote returns are pretty much the same as they were two years ago —  the last Republican wave election in Colorado, right?

So which is it, Buck is up by 1-3 percent depending on likely voter models, according to polls — in which case on-the-ground turnout makes a huge difference — or it’s such a massive Republican wave nothing anyone does will make a difference? It can’t be both.

                1. I know that true belivers have repeated that, have you seen the numbers?

I think it is a 5 point race and that Bennet was losing by 5 in August and will lose by 5 in November.  So far he has not topped 45% in any Independent nonpartisan poll and there are only 4% undecided.

What makes you think the Dems will do a better job turning out voter’s this cycle?  From what I have seen so far, that does not appear to be the case.

                2. Here are the numbers for early voting:

                  Party          2008     2010

                  Dems           37.7     36.5

                  Republicans   35.9     41.2

Dems down a little bit 1.2%

                  Republicans up a lot 5.3%

A 6.5% differential is not pretty much the same. It is huge

  1. For the college town Coloradoan to endorse Ken Buck is to deny that his radical views will not destroy much of the quality higher educational programs we enjoy in this state.  Ken Buck is a radical in the same wash as Marilyn Musgrave: anti-gay, anti-women, anti-environment, and even anti-student.  We always knew that the Coloradoan was a sloppy, poorly conceived paper, but this endorsement proves the point.  Ken Buck would like to introduce you to a world run by misogynistic thinking, where women who are raped are forced to give birth to the rapist’s offspring.  What’s next, visitation rights?  He is too much in the mold of Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, who was a national embarrassment to the state of Colorado.  Been there, done that.

    1. Buck too.

Gay Americans are second class citizens – better than illegal immigrants, but still best if and when they know they’re place. Like women. Women got the vote and all hell broke loose. And we gave women control over their bodies, and things got worse. Everything works out better when women know their place too – and stay in it.  Politely.

      1. Do you agree with Mayor Hickenloopers description of Coloradans that live in rural areas and on the western slope as “backwards?”  Do you believe that these “backwards” people are the same as the men who murdered Matthew Shepherd?  Can you name one case in Colorado, where these “backwards” people murdered a gay person?

            1. except a few times for dinner over several decades.

Why is it OK for Ken Buck to call the Afghan people “backwards” when that’s the worst word in the world for Hickenlooper to use? How does that kind of elitism help us defeat the terrorists?

              1. If the Afghanis were voting in the Colorado election I would get your point.  I think Hicks move will take up some of the water cooler conversation next week which from my perspective is a good thing.

    2. Outside of Denver, Boulder and Grand Junction all the other newspapers in the state have endorsed Buck.  So many papers.  So much denial.

Sometimes it is better to look inside yourself for answers.
