What was your most satisfying, and disappointing election results from last night?

  • by: Laughing Boy

Both locally and nationally.  Which wins really made you excited and hopeful, and which losses stung the most?

For me, locally, a tie – the most satisfying had to be Markey going down by such a wide margin to Gardner, and Cary Kennedy losing to Walker Stapleton.

Markey and many House Dems can directly tie their defeat to their vote for Obamacare.  Save that, it’s a closer race and maybe she can hold on.

Kennedy losing was satisfying because of that awful tact of focusing on an 11-year-old DUI that has been paid for in the eyes of the law long, long ago.  It was a shameful attack.

Nationally, knowing Alan Grayson will never again get to speak on the House floor is especially satisfying.  He’s a beast – an immature, disgusting excuse for a human being.

Fiorina losing to Senator Ma’am was really disappointing.  Boxer is corrupt, and represents what can go wrong with no term limits in the Senate.

Bueller?  Anyone?  Anyone?

      1. But early polling a year and a half ago had him as immensely popular even amongst Republicans. I was hoping that he’d surprise everybody.

Grayson is not gonna get quiet now that he’s not in the House anymore. He’s one of the wealthiest people on the hill, believe it or not. Get ready for a Grayson PAC and a lot of TV talk time for him.

            1. stood by their votes and their convictions like him and Anthony Weiner, we wouldn’t keep getting pummeled by the crazies on the other side! People might actually start thinking our values HAD value!!!

              1. He’s obviously principled (alas, misguided), but he’s a decent man.

Grayson is an awful, disgusting, lying POS.  Who wants to bet that he has a show on MSNBS within the year?

                  1. He used Webster saying one thing to try to make the point that he was saying the opposite.

He’s not a firebrand – he’s a rude jackass, and we can do better.  Webster is a pretty scary guy, too, but he’s a step up from Grayson’s garbage.

                    1. I think that’s more interesting that Grayson, so I’m going to change the subject. I can change your mind on him another time. 🙂

  1. can tie their losses to a really poor effort to educate the populace about health care reform. And Kennedy’s “attack” was no more shameful than any number of GOP led hit pieces. I’ll at least respect your opinion about Kennedy if you agree that Willie Horton was shameful, too.

I’m excited locally about Bennet, as that was the most important competition here. (No one but a few shills thought Tanc was even going to make a contest of the gubernatorial race, or else I’d be excited about that too, instead of merely satisfied and happy.) It’s disappointing that Joe Rice is going down.

Nationally, I’m excited that most of the dyed in the wool tea party darlings lost, as it means that voters still have some sense. I’m especially happy that Patty Murray is hanging on in Washington. I really dig her and was proud to be able to vote for her twice (98, 04). Dino Rossi is a world class schmuck and I’m glad he’s going 0-3 in statewide races there. Russ Feingold’s defeat, OTOH, is a bitter pill and the biggest disappointment.

Term limits aren’t something even Republicans want, so don’t lose any sleep over that.

    1. How is she supposed to educate people about something she hasn’t read when she voted on it?

If you can tell me exactly which part of the Willie Horton ad you find distasteful, I’ll comment on it.

      1. Big scary black guy. That was the whole point.

But it was also offensive on a factual level. Governors don’t monitor who goes out on furlough.

I don’t know what you mean about Markey. I was thinking more of Obama. He needed to sell HCR to the people and he didn’t do that.

        1. For more than a year – not even all the Dems were buying.  It’s a bad, bad law with some good parts.  And it was passes in such a shitty manner that you are left with the results you see this morning.

There were two Horton ads.  Which one are you referring to?  You also know that those were run in 1988, right?

          1. And don’t be disingenuous. You know which ad I mean.

If you want more recent examples, there were the Swift Boat ads.

All I’m really looking for from you is a condemnation of GOP dirty tricks. Otherwise it’s my belief that you judge these things as morally right when it benefits the GOP and morally wrong when it attacks them. For that, and for no other reason.

            1. It says something that so many people Kerry served with did not want him anywhere near the Presidency.  They were a lot more honest than the “fake but accurate” bullshit.

The only ad that showed Horton or mentioned his name was an outside PAC and ran for less than two weeks.  H.W. Bush gets saddled with blame for a racist ad that he had nothing to do with.

              1. You think that speaks well of the people who repeated those lies? At least Stapleton really did have a hit and run DUI. (How long did that ad run, BTW?)

At least you admit it was a racist ad. I guess that’s the best I can hope for.

When do you want your beer, BTW?

              2. LB, I thought you were a reasonable and thoughtful person. However stating the way you are that the Swift Boat Smears were truthful and by the same people who served with Kerry removes that consideration.

Those were lies, as were the smears against Max Cleland.

The men in that smear campaign acknowledged they lied.

The promoter of that smear campaign should have been prosecuted and jailed for his actions. And now for you to try and perpetuate the lies is very disgusting.

                    1. Pam asserted that some of the SVFT admitted they’d lied about their positions on Kerry.  Let’s see it…

                  1. Stephen Gardner has been touted by the anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and by conservative hosts as a singularly authoritative critic with firsthand knowledge of Senator John Kerry’s (D-MA) record in Vietnam because Gardner — unlike all the other members of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth — actually served on a swift boat that Kerry commanded. Gardner has questioned Kerry’s integrity; has claimed personal knowledge of the circumstances leading to Kerry’s first Purple Heart; and has spoken with authority about the events leading to Kerry’s Bronze Star. Fellow anti-Kerry Swift Boat Vets member Larry Thurlow has also cited Gardner as eyewitness support for his accusations against Kerry and against Kerry’s first Purple Heart. Yet while Gardner did serve as a gunner under Kerry’s command on PCF (Patrol Craft Fast) 44, he has admitted that he — just like the rest of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth claiming that Kerry is lying about his medals — was not present for the incidents leading to Kerry’s receipt of any medals or any of Kerry’s three Purple Hearts.

Gardner admitted that “he was not on the boat with Kerry during the incidents for which Kerry got his medals,” reported The Columbus Dispatch on August 6. And as a guest on Michael Savage’s radio show, Savage Nation, on August 2, Gardner said that of Kerry’s three Purple Hearts, he could only attest to the first; Gardner later admitted to Savage that he was “not on the boat with him [Kerry]” when that injury occurred.

                    http://mediamatters.org/resear

So THERE. This guy is a complete Blue Falcon, and a paid media whore for the Right.

And DON’T get me started about the scumbags that tore down Max Cleland. He’s the only reason we have a functioning VA in this country, and the attacks on him from the Right-Wing noise machine are beyond sleazy.

To this day, if I ever get a chance to pimp-slap that cunt Ann Coultier, I’d glad do and serve the time in jail.

  2. Boxer winning was pretty sweet for me.

I’ll agree that Grayson was annoying as hell, but he rocked politically.

Overall most satisfying had to be Sharrrron Angle getting stomped along with Christine O’Donnell’s list of demands in her ridiculous “concession” speech.

Most disappointing but predictable thing that happened was Russ Feingold losing in Wisc. Hopefully Herb Kohl will retire and Feingold will run again in 2 years.

  3. Nationally, biggest disappointment: Russ Feingold. One of the most principled political figures in the country, there’s really no one else like him.

Nationally, most satisfying: Harry Reid. I’m not even much of a Reid fan, but Angle was truly loathsome and a Reid loss would have meant an even worse disaster for the Democratic “brand.”

Locally, biggest disappontment: Like so many others, I’m sure, I gotta say Cary Kennedy. She was fantastic and didn’t deserve to lose to such a braindead silver-spoon non-entity. I didn’t really think she’d win, but was hoping.

Locally, most satisfying: The two top ticket races were immensely satisfying, but I gotta go with Rep. Scanlan winning comfortably in HD-56. Shows that neck of the woods has its head screwed on straight.

    1. Gotta agree with Feingold as a huge disappoinment and a bigger loss.

Unless the Harry Reid you’re referring to is a different Harry Reid than the milquetoast Senate majority leader then I’m at a loss here — I see him as the lesserest of all possible evils — I can only hope the caucus has the good sense to replace him at the soonest.  Most satisfying for me nationally, looks like either Jerry Brown or Lisa Murkowski.

Cary Kennedy being replaced by Walker Stapleton — it doesn’t get any worse than that.

Most locally satisfying the GOP gubernatorial candidate hovering at 10% — please, please, please fall under.

      1. But could you be a dear Ralphie and see how Dittemore did in 2006 and 2008? I’d just like to see how Harvey did in comparison to his nominal predecessor.

          1. I think a better race can be run in that district than the Dems have run there so far, but comparing different wave years doesn’t say much about the candidates.

If we are going to make dubious comparisons, I like this one better…

            Candidate (votes)

            Steve Harvey (10,407)

            Kevin Priola (10,272)

            Edward Casso (9,480)

            John Soper (9,029)

            Cherylin Peniston (8,662)

            Mark Ferrandino (8,441)

            Mark Barker (4,695)

Let he who has more than 10,000 votes cast the first stone.

      1. Not that I’d spend much time reading Colorado Confluence, but I give it a glance every now and then. Harvey ripped into MOTR and Ralphie today.

At the same time admitting he was going to lose by a margin of this magnitude. As a resident of the area, I never loved Dittemore, but at least it seemed like he always wanted to win it. He worked at it. Not so much for Harvey, who appears to have spent much of his campaign time on this and other blogs.

    1. For me as well.  First ran into the arrogant blowhard after a discussion on Denver Post forums.  Signed-up for Confluence and took his abusive condescension for about three days.  He couldn’t handle any questioning of his long-winded dissertations and me pointing out his hypocrisy.  He deleted my last few posts and banned me from his site.  Big brave intellectual he pretends to be, hiding from discussion and banning those who question him.

      Coward and a fraud

  4. I did it as a new post so as not to jack up the borders.

I admit it plays into people who might be racist’s fears, but it doesn’t strike me as being as nasty as some of the stuff out there today.  Actually, less nasty and more factual than a couple of Garnett’s ads against Suthers.

Which ads lied about Kerry’s service?

      1. And he talked about it as a positive thing in his stump speeches.

Certainly more accountable for that than Suthers was for Kimball’s murders.  Horton had already been convicted of murder.

Did that ad strike you as incredibly racist?

Keep in mind, that’s not the Bush ad.

        1. I don’t remember the guy’s name, but Dukakis didn’t set it up.

And one. last. time. Governors don’t review who goes on furlough. Unlike Suthers, who did review the Kimball case.

I’m going to bow out at this point, because you’re proving to me that you judge these thing on their political merits, not their ethical ones.

          1. But at the time he released him, Kimball was not a convicted murderer.  Horton most certainly was.

            From Wikipedia:

Democratic Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis was the governor of Massachusetts at the time of Horton’s release, and while he did not start the furlough program, he had supported it as a method of criminal rehabilitation. The State inmate furlough program was actually signed into law by Republican Governor Francis W. Sargent in 1972. However, under Sargent, convicted first-degree murderers were not eligible for furlough. After the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that this right extended to first-degree murderers, the Massachusetts legislature quickly passed a bill prohibiting furloughs for such inmates. However, in 1976, Dukakis vetoed this bill.[2] The program remained in effect through the intervening term of governor Edward J. King and was abolished during Dukakis’ final term of office on April 28, 1988. This abolition only occurred after the Lawrence Eagle Tribune had run 175 stories about the furlough program and won a Pulitzer Prize.[5]

              1. I think the ad is often mis-represented, and on its face isn’t necessarily racist.

I will qualify that by saying that Lee Atwater leveraged racist voters intentionally.

It wasn’t a gotcha at you at all, Ari.  It’s all good.

            1. But if it’s all legit, then why not release the records? My guess (purely a guess) is that they would show that Suthers was warned that Kimball was a lying con-man and couldn’t be trusted.

        1. Do they just give those out to guys who make up shit? Or do they investigate the stories and get corroboration before awarding them?

I don’t need to see his records because I trust that they already checked out his story. Maybe you go around wondering if war heroes deserve their honors, but I don’t.

              1. If you folks organize one, I’ll be there. I’d love to meet some of the personalities here. Hell, I’d even be willing to help organize one.

Guessing bjwilson83 won’t be able to make it, however.

              2. and if there is any wind of a get together I’d sure like to participate and meet a lot of you, especially since the acrimony of the election is gone.

Even if we just meet for a beer, I could bring a really good steak or a few for LB to bring home.

Anyway, we have a kickass babysitter so I am getting the first tastes of freedom again.  It would be a good idea though.

  5. It depends.

Originally, it kept Dems focused on me instead of campaigning. Sort of taking it to your opponents turf – “fight them over there instead of at home”. The left was allowed to grow unchecked in the last several election cycles because conservatives clumped together in hiding instead of taking their arguments to the other side and engaging in debate. It was an educational mission to squash the dangerously insane ideas of the left. Then Pols actually gained in popularity and began to be picked up by traditional media, in which case it became a great soapbox from which to get my arguments across to the larger public. Just throw up a controversial diary, it gets tons of comments (because people love to hate me), and voila everybody’s talking about it. And finally, yes it is satisfying to gloat. No, the election is not over for another 17 hours, but 2/3 of the vote is already in and all the work is done except making a few phone calls – all the arguments have been made.

That satisfying comment is going to keep me chuckling for weeks.

  6. Two major ones:

    1)  My representative Sara Gagliardi losing.  She was a fantastic representative who deserved to be reelected.  The fact that a nutjob like Libby Szabo is replacing her makes it even more difficult to swallow.

    2)  Dan Maes scraping together >10% of the vote which will keep Republicans as a “major party” in Colorado races.

Most satisfying?  The margin of victory John Hickenlooper had over Tom “I hate all illegals unless they are finishing my basement” Tancredo.

  7. I’m a native Coloradan. 3rd generation for that matter.  I’m starting to see that I might not be here much longer.  After the past several election cycles, seeing this state turn more and more “blue”, I’m thinking Colorado is the next California if we don’t stop this trend.  It’s not hard to make the connection of all the people leaving California because of their terrible policies and then growing those suicidal policies here.

I think it reigned back in this cycle, but I thought the way the economy is here, we would be bright red, not purple.  My only consolation is that my county, El Paso, is solid red.  I wish Buck and Tancredo could have pulled it off.  If Tancredo could have won, who knows what that would have meant for our future and all those industries in California that are packing it up and packing it in and looking for the right business friendly state to move to.  Where is that state?

I’m excited about what the wave of change means for our country.  Hopefully the new members of congress don’t forget how they got there.  Be strong and persistent.

    1. That was one hyperbole-laden comment. Hickenlooper is a successful businessman and executive. Tancredo is a demagogue. Only the hardest of hard right would think that we didn’t elect the more qualified man.

    2. Colorado is joining the Pac-12!

We’re moving to the Left Coast.

Pretty soon the Pacific Ocean will be lapping up against the foothills. El Paso County will morph into the OC. Denver turns into LA, Boulder is the next Santa Monica, and we’ll start calling it “the-25”.

      Enjoy your move to Texas.

      1. The patchwork quilt of districts, conflicting rules out of each, and having to guess in many cases makes handling sales take a giant pain in the rear. Doesn’t make Colorado awful, but it does make it less friendly.

  8. This was the first campaign I’ve ever actively worked on. I was proud to help, in my small way, elect an intelligent, ethical, very competent Senator to a full term.

Most disappointing would be seeing Alexi Giannoulis lose the President’s senate seat to a proven liar. I have no patience for someone who lies about their military record in any way. I don’t think Blumenthal should have been elected either but am glad it was him over the WWE whack-o. Blumenthal should have been defeated in the primary. He needs to make amends to all vets somehow.

  9. I dislike Feingold’s political stances immensely, but he’s obviously very principled, a fairly pleasant and reasoned guy to listen to, and I have a lot of respect for him as a dude.  If I were on your side it would be a painful loss, too.

I’m also not totally crushed by Bennet’s win.  He’s a very intelligent guy, and hopefully now he’ll stand up for himself a little more, now that Obama’s agenda has been so thoroughly repudiated.  Also a very nice and good man.

    1. I don’t agree with most of what he says policy-wise but I don’t think he is evil. I think, and hope, he will move away from Demint and truly represent Florida. I think he has a real future ahead of him if he can do that.

  10. I stayed up until 3:30 following the changing numbers in the Senate race before calling it a night, and had my eyes glued to the TV, my laptop, and my DroidX for nine hours. There was lots for this weird mash-up of a Democrat and Libertarian to be concerned/upset about, but some pretty bright spots, too.

It’s really hard to pick the best and worst from last night, so I’ll give you two of each.

    Most satisfying (tie):

    1) Seeing a ton of Tea Party candidates crash and burn, as voters rejected the most extreme among them.

    2) Seeing Amendment 63 voted down in this majority-conservative state. As a freelance copy editor, I have to purchase health insurance on the individual market, and I have some significant pre-existing conditions that have made this hard (MS, family history of cancer). I’m very much looking forward to 2014. Is the new health care law perfect? No. Is it better than the status quo? Yes, for me.

    Most disappointing (tie):

    1) Markey’s defeat in CD-4, as now I once again have to be “represented” by someone who really doesn’t “represent” me or my values. I suppose that’s what I get for living in a fairly rural area, but thinking as if I lived in a big city.

    2) Maes getting more than 10 percent of the guv’s race vote. I really wanted to see the GOP get turned into a minor party in Colorado for a while for the incompetence that has been shown in vetting candidates before the party nominates them.

  11. most disappointing

nationally – Sestack  I’ve met him a few times, he’s a great guy and an American hero.  He picked a bad year to try and move up.

local – more than one in the State House. Some good people lost races because they had a D after their name. Likewise some pinheads won just because they had an R. (The inverse of both is also true- doesn’t bother me as much.)

    Satisfying

    National and local   Bennet.

One of the good guys and a chance to be one of the great Senators.

I don’t hate Buck, though I disagree with most of his politics.  But he ran a poor campaign primary and general and it was his to lose and he did.

  12. Most satisfying races for me were the local ones anyway. Bennet winning was far and away the highlight since I’d volunteered for him, and I think Buck is really a terrible person who would say anything to get elected. Most disappointing was Betsy Markey, because I’d donated to her in both elections and her district is the closest competitive one.

Nationally my biggest disappointment is Toomey, since I’m from Pennsylvania and Sestak seemed so close at the end.

Biggest thrill (aside from Bennet) was the fact that Republican women got killed all over the country (Whitman, Fiorina, McMahon, Angle, O’Donnell). Conservatives just really don’t like women, and they tried to put up a facade that said, “See, some of our best friends are women!” but it didn’t work. Because women voters didn’t fall for it, and conservative men just didn’t like them very much.

One of the reasons the House fell so much more easily than the Senate was all the right-wingers running against Pelosi rather than Reid. Pelosi is arguably a much better leader (whether you agree with her or not, she gets things done), and the main thing conservatives dislike about her is that she’s a woman. Same way they were disappointed that Hillary Clinton didn’t run for President in 2008: they really wanted to run those “Citizens United Not Timid” ads against her.

I think the fact that lots of Democratic women won and lots of Republican women lost reinforces the idea that Republicans are the party of sexist assholes, and will help us in the long run.

  13. I’m honestly glad to see that you’re still here among the living.

I won’t insult you by calling you a “decent sort,” but you’re obviously a “decent-enough-sort.”

Make an appearance on the 20th and I’ll buy you a libation and we can talk about tropical paradises and diving.

  14. Most satisfying

    1) Rep. John Soper’s HD34 win.

    2) 60, 61, 62 and 101 going down.

    3) Sen. Bennet victory.

    4) State Senate remaining Democratic majority.

    5) Senate in Dems majority.

    6) Gov. stays democratic.

    Most Dissappointing:

    1) The possibility that the state house may go 33 to 32 repubs (still hoping for either 33 or 39 to go our way).

    2) Wisconson Senate results.

    3) P.A. Senate result.

    4) House of Representatives in GOP majority.

    5> Betsy Markey losing.

    6) Kennedy losing.

  15. Most disappointing was Kennedy & Markey losing. Those hurt. And in the case of Kennedy, losing to a trust funder who’s never done anything on his own – WTF?

Most satisfying was Bennet winning and the amendments/initiatives all going down to a large defeat.

  16. Satisfying — Guess.

Awesome, amazing, incredible day.  Even MaryLou or StrykerK2 couldn’t screw it up. In addition to the Bennet win, I was thrilled Daniel Kagan and Pat Steadman, among others, won.

Disappointing — Doug Milliken and John Flerlage — two amazing, talented, deserving men. Doug was running for re-election as Treasurer in Arapahoe County, where he won an award for the Best County Treasurer in the United States and Canada (seriously!).

John Flerlage, who lost to “Say no to everything”/ vote-purger, Mike Coffman.

I feel terrible for many others who lost last night, too.

  17. Betsy was the MIlitary and Veterans Best friend in Congress. She was one of the highest rated legislators by a slew of Service organizations, and was working on an Updated GI Bill that plugged some holes AND would’ve opened up the discounts for tuition to ALL vets, not just the post 9/11 era guys.

I know that the Republican’t Party is going to go to war against vets in the next session of Congress, primarily by trying to slash the VA budget and killing any new program that will help vets with the transition back.

Most Satisfying? Perlmutter’s win, even though I was pleasantly surprised by Bennet’s OT win. While I think Frazier was a decent guy when I met him, listening to his stump speech at UVC made me realize he’s just another GOP Whore trying to win a seat.

  18. Most disappointing nationally:  The defeat of Joe Stepak in PA.

Most disappointing locally:  The defeat of Kennedy

2nd most disappointing: The defeat of Hart

Best moment nationally:  Harry Reid’s win

Best moment locally:  Three way tie:  Hickenlooper, Bennet and Perlmutter’s wins.

  19. most locally: overwhelming passage of measure 2B in Fort Collins. Shows that voters will approve tax increases when govt cuts frills first –

most provisionaly: Jerry McNerney hanging in at CA11. Race still too close to call. Richard Pombo’s old seat.

most nationally: Sarah Palin being responsible for keeping Dems in control of Senate

least: Defeat of Larimer Sheriff candidate Jay Harrison. He was the most bicycle friendly.

least nationally: defeat of so many Emily’s List gals. Betsy Markey and others.

least disgustingly: Election of Rand Paul after his goon Tim Profitt showed it is all right for a male to curb-stomp a female political activist. I hope this jerk does serious jail time.

least statewide: results of SOS race. Puts the fox in charge of the henhouse.
