Curry Concedes in HD-61

  • by: Colorado Pols

Unaffiliated Rep. Kathleen Curry’s surprisingly close write-in bid is over. Posted to her website a short while ago, she has formally conceded to Democrat Roger Wilson:

It is finally official – I did not win the race for House District 61. I came within 300 votes out of 30,000 cast – but it wasn’t enough.  The final count as I have it is Roger 9660, the “write in” 9368.   I called Roger Wilson to wish him luck a few minutes ago. I want to thank my family, my supporters, and the county clerks for their efforts to finalize the vote count these last few days.  I think the count is accurate and this district needs to know who it’s new representative is – Roger Wilson of Glenwood Springs.

We’ve been critical of Rep. Curry’s decision to disaffiliate from the Democratic Party early this year, which seems to have been made impulsively after equally ill-advised legislation she co-sponsored with a Republican–essentially to antagonize fellow Democrats on health care. Curry also sided unproductively with Republicans in key budget battles last year. Her decisions, first to alienate and then to disaffiliate from her party, directly resulted in her being forced to wage an unlikely write-in struggle for what should have been an easy re-election.

Despite this, we admit that we didn’t expect her to fare as well as she did with such a huge disadvantage, an indication of her enduring local support. There’s every possibility that, despite this self-inflicted setback, we’ve not seen the last of Kathleen Curry in Colorado politics.

  1. She would have been my pick for Hick’s Lieutenant Gov. if it hadn’t been for her fall from grace.  Despite that, she remains a fine mind, a great source of information on water issues.  I hope she rejoins the Democratic Party and stays in public life.  To have come so close in a write in is a testament to her ability.

    1. All of it.  You’re eloquent, on target, and reasonable today.

I’m not.  Funny how the result kind of upset me; not necessarily because she lost, but because it really implies that as a printed name on the ballot she would’ve won.

      WTF, Kathleen?

Anyway, I seriously expect her to run again in two years… as an independent still.  So we may get half our wish.

      1. is the R finishing third, especially this year.

That district leans Democratic, but no way should you have been able to split the D base two ways and still finish 1-2.  I guess it’s a sign of how strong Curry’s R and U support was.

I also expect to see her back on the ballot as an independent in two years.  But I’d much rather she reconcile with the Ds.

        1. I am not in 61, but know and respect Kathleen.  Not sure what I would have done if I lived there.  Garfield has of late been a swing county, races–even this year–were a lot closer there than elsewhere on the Western Slope.  It was especially close in 2008, but also this year relative to other counties.

I think you are right, Curry has/had a lot of support from R’s and U’s in her district.

  2. Curry is a wonderful example of how to govern in this state and I sincerely hope she returns to public service sometime in the future.

    Good campaign, Kathleen! Well done.

  3. If she runs as an independent in 2012 she will be the favorite.  On the other hand voters may figure out that Roger Wilson is a solid person not a petulant whiner who doesn’t check the law before switching parties.  Curry ran an impressive race but it may well have been her last hurrah.

  4. who ran a fine campaign. Winning in HD61 by a Democrat is always difficult. This year with popular incumbent Curry as a write-in, more so. I think he will represent the district well. When re-election time comes, I hope all those who are disappointed that Curry lost, will be on board with Roger.
