At Least She's Not Your School Board Member...Oh, Crap

Jefferson County School Board member Laura Boggs was on the receiving end of a biting editorial today from the Denver newspaper, the latest black mark in the bizarre saga of the Republican who has made a series of odd moves since being elected last November.

As The High Timber Times explains:

Jeffco school board member Laura Boggs was censured by the board Dec. 16, the first time such an action has been taken in district history.

The censure, on a unanimous vote, came after board members characterized Boggs’ behavior as erratic, disrespectful and inconsistent. District Superintendent Cindy Stevenson accused Boggs of “attacking the school district that she was elected to protect” during a conversation between the two.

Under board rules, Boggs was not allowed to vote on the censure. The censure doesn’t limit Boggs’ participation on the board or in performing her duties as a board member. It simply stands as formal public disapproval of a board member’s conduct by other members.

However, Boggs, who represents District 2 (the Jefferson County foothills), may lose her ability to participate on board committees. A motion to remove Boggs from all committees she currently serves on will be considered at the Jan. 6 meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Jeffco Public Schools building, 1829 Denver West Drive.

“If we don’t do something now (about Boggs’ behavior), we’re looking at three more years of this, and I think that’s not acceptable,” board member Paula Noonan said.

In less than one year on the school board, the erratic Boggs has pulled one weird stunt after another. Here’s a short list of the crazy:

  • Superintendent Cindy Stevenson said that Boggs told her she wanted to “tear this county apart” and has threatened to try to torpedo a $32.8 million grant awarded to the school district in September.

  • Last fall, Boggs actively campaigned in favor of Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 — although she had previously cast a vote on the school board to oppose the “Evil Three” ballot measures.

  • In March, Boggs snuck into a Jefferson County teacher’s union meeting and hid behind a tripod with poster paper on it before an official escorted her out of the room.

  • And lest we forget, Boggs was widely criticized in March for saying that school is stupid in a visit to Green Mountain High School. You read that last line correctly — she linked the words “school” and “stupid” on a white board.
  • Laura Boggs…making students, and voters, feel stoopid!

    1. That Pols would have put together a front-paged article, complete with graphics, condemning a school board member that’s being targeted by teacher’s unions.

      I’m shocked, I tell you.

    2. her behavior, she does sound a little wacky…but Colorado School Boards of Education are notorious for having people who are “professional board members”.

While I wouldn’t go about it the way that she did, I certainly think there should always be at least one board member who is willing to ask the tough questions and to take the tough stances.  It makes the “professional board members” start to think!

      1. What tough stances has she taken?

She wasn’t censored for asking tough questions and taking tough stances. She was censored in the hope that she would dial back the crazy.

      2. She makes all other school board members (including the ones you may not like) look a lot better by comparison.

She’s probably a plant from the Professional Left school board members, to make all you right-wingers sound completely crazy.

        1. I didn’t say that she asked tough questions or that she had taken good stances.  I actually said she was wacky, but made an observation that public board need at least one board member that is willing to ask tough questions and take hard stances.

Why would you oppose such an observation unless you are one of those “professional board” members?

          1. re-read your comment. You didn’t say she was wacky and it reads as though you think that she was the one asking tough questions.

But thanks for the clarification – it’s easy to put things in print that aren’t what we’re truly thinking.

        2. Those people that serve on board just to be on a board rather than serve do just as much of a diservice to their communities and those they represent as this nut job (Laura Boggs) is doing.

Don’t get on boards just to hold down a chair.  Get on boards to have a voice.  I’d perfer a liberal activist over a “place holder” any day of the week.  At least they have a position.

          1. The cheerleaders and placeholders on the boards (and they generally make a majority) are a total waste of time. The few that do step up to do their job, regardless of their philosophy, are key to a good district.

And yes, this women is a nut and good for the rest of the board for stepping up and saying so.

      1. Between someone who does lousy speeches and someone who demeans the district she’s elected to help.

No one ever suggested censuring Noonan for her speech. It’s sad that she didn’t think more of the event to put something together, but it’s a far cry from threatening to interfere with a $33 million grant, yes?

    3. Granted, I don’t do a lot of following School Board elections outside of Denver (’cause I live here), but did she ever say she wanted to protect the Board or District?

“Erratic, disrespectful and inconsistent” how, exactly?  She seems pretty steady on her message to kill the government entity.  The hiding thing is crazy, but the rest may be exactly what she planned and was elected for.  Something like 80K people vote in these elections and they are usually nearly 50/50.  I don’t have trouble believing that 40K JeffCo residents purposely voted for someone to straighten up, or kill, the place they are elected to, uh, “protect.”
