Inauguration Day Open Thread

“So let us begin anew–remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.”

–John F. Kennedy

  1. Middle School Board of County Commissioners:

Officially, Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland was appointed Monday to lead the board of commissioners in 2011.

Unofficially, she and Commissioner Craig Meis agreed to that arrangement in an exchange of e-mails two months ago, with Meis saying he supported Rowland leading the board because it would drive Commissioner Steve Acqua-fresca “absolutely nuts.”

…Meis replied that he preferred for Rowland to serve as chairwoman in both 2011 and 2012.

“You are a harder worker than I am as Commissioner with my many distractions between home and professional and are better at the staff communication piece which is what we need desperately,” Meis wrote. “An ancillary benefit in doing this is that it will drive Steve absolutely nuts which is another selling point for me.”

Meis concluded his e-mail by typing a colon and parenthesis to create a smiley face.

    1. that our buddy, Craig, continues to raise the bar on being a complete ass. There seems to be no limit to the meanness in the man.

Commissioner Acquafresca is a fairly personable and reasonable man. I don’t agree with his politics, but I like him, personally.

      1. with, apparently, severe arrested development.  When you reflexively vote for anyone with an ‘R’ after their name, eventually you end up with Craig Meis.

It’s a corollary of the Peter Principle I believe–the Craig Corollary, or perhaps the Meis Mechanism (the process by which a rabidly partisan electorate eventually elects a complete moran)…

        1. both you and Duke are right on.  I tried (in vein) to warn a number of R’s about Meis several years ago.  Now at least two of them  are believers but it’s too late. He’s in there until he is termed… God help us.

          1. “my ol’ buddy” because I think it may irritate him.

He may well be the worst public servant of all time. He serves three things:

            1. His own personal fortune.

            2. His cronies in the O&G business.

            3. His benefactors in the Republican party.

As far as Meis is concerned, if you don’t fit into one of those categories, you can pretty much fuck off.

            1. .

neither the Duke nor the Barron nor the peons should have any say in how they’re governed.

Or, as Obama put it, “We won.”

              Do you disagree ?

              .

  2. From the Arizona Republic and in response to the Westboro Baptist Church’s threats to picket the 9 year old girls funeral.

    http://www.azcentral.com/news/

Democrats in the Arizona Legislature say they will introduce a bill Tuesday to create a “funeral protection zone” to keep protesters from disrupting the funerals of those killed in the mass shooting near Tucson.

The bill is patterned after a Ohio statute that has a 300 foot protection zone around a funeral.  They are asking that normal legislative rules be waved so the bill can be debated and passed in one day.

There is also a local movement to have a non violent human wall of angel wings standing between the so called church and the funeral.

  3. Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon today hired San Diego State’s Brady Hoke as the 19th coach in Michigan football history…

Green Bay Packers star and Michigan alumnus Charles Woodson wrote in a text message to the Associated Press. “I’m glad this process is over and we can begin to restore the tradition and respect that was once Michigan.”

    Ouch!
