It does not look like Rep. M. Coffman’s version of attack government workers has made the big time in Denver yet. His great idea to reduce the federal pay by a munificent $5.5B is to force every federal employee to take two weeks off each year without pay.
Besides the inane idea, and it is stupid no matter the level of government it is performed at, of forcing workers to take a pay cut by mandate of the politicians, it does nil towards reducing the cost of government. Oh I can hear the cry “every little bit adds up”, yeah sure all the anti-government types need are another 909090909.0909091 of them little ones to equal one of the trillions of dollars that are payed out.
No mention of reducing the cost of the industrial-military combine. There are the bills to leave veterans without – again. But every little dollar adds up. Cutting back on veterans really does help the budget. It takes a lot of those to make a trillion dollars.
Despite the Republican lies about government employees being high paid, they are paid less than private employment. There was a study published a few weeks ago in the Washington Post regarding pay and retirement contrasts. Private employment pays better.
I do not care for the snarky and dumb government worker jokes. They are not funny. Just as in any work place there are many types of workers. So one liners are not useful in discussing real life.

As are their “exorbitant” pensions. Been hearing this drumbeat for a couple of months. Rile up the unemployed/underemployed by pointing at people with jobs. Not that it’s class warfare, Rs would never do that.
OK – “in the sights” is inappropriate given… …My brain froze and the only other thing that came to me was “target” – no better.
Better. Had to sleep on it.

Feds actually make up to double what their peers make in the private sector, when benefits are included.
This is for Federal workers.
If U R a state worker, I haven’t seen data on such comparisons.

As a manager, I’m not sure how you make that work. In a small organization, you can appeal to a sense of family and/or community, and show your staffers that everyone is sharing in the sacrifice. In larger organizations, pay cuts mean a more pissed-off, unmotivated staff. “Take the pay cut or quit” usually means staff will stay, but they’re going to work less. I would guess that a 4% cut in pay generates a 10% drop in productivity. Good move.
The unmentioned failure to all the stupid talk of forced pay cuts AND not being in the office means whatever projects and work that was being performed will be delayed that long, plus restart time.
But, the proposed bill does do what the Republicans want to do – damage and destroy government. So for them it is a fine proposal.
I have seen large companies do this well. People aren’t thrilled but they understand and see it as an alternative to layoffs.
but it is tricky. For a Tom Peters-Excellence organization, with a healthy sense of community and good communication, it can work. But for most organizations, it’s preferable to layoff. Cut 4% of your workforce, the work gets picked up by others who are now a little more overworked and a little more willing to put in the extra effort. Take money away from everyone, and everyone is demoralized.
