That’s the word from Daniel Chacon at the Colorado Springs newspaper–anti-tax activist, landlord, secretive ballot measure mastermind, and author of 1992’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) amendment Doug Bruce will run for a seat on the Springs City Council. Along with just about everyone in the state, Bruce has butted heads with the Springs city government for many years; it will be fascinating to see what the reaction is to this most hostile of bids.
And yes, everybody even remotely involved should buy shin guards.

I don’t think there was any actual “kicking.”
Doug said he put his shoe on the guy and pushed. No sharp impact, as “kick” implies.
But when would Doug Bruce ever get teated fairly on this forum ?
.
I was on the House floor that morning – and there was enough force put into his “push” to knock the photographer over. And the photographer said he had been kicked.
.
Some guys in Afghanistan often tell me that I don’t know what’s going on there because I’m not over there.
As if hangin’ at the Bagram BK is any closer to the action.
.
Did you really see him not make contact? Because it was pretty clear.
.
and what exactly is that sig line hinting at ?
.
I know it stands in stark contrast to my overall Pols participation, but the sig line is completely literal. I think Gabrielle Giffords has what it takes to be President, and I believe she’ll make a full recovery in time for 2016. She means a lot to me and was someone I saw as a role model even before the shooting.
I’m thinking of having a yard sign custom printed with “Gabrielle Giffords President 2016.” I like Hillary fine (though I voted Obama in the primary) but I genuinely think Gabby will be the first female POTUS.
I have several healing holes in my brain and even though most people wouldn’t guess (no jokes, please), I would consider it irresponsible to put myself in a situation where I make important decisions for people.
There are weird lapses, I can’t track time properly, etc. The brain is complicated like that. So while she may end up close to pre-holed, it won’t ever be really. It’s worked for other Presidents, sure, but if she really has what it should take, she wouldn’t run.
Seriously though, TBI is a huge issue for soldiers coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan. Presidential staffers can keep her calendar in order, but they can’t instill that same empathy and understanding in someone who hasn’t experienced recovery from this kind of catastrophic injury. I would like to see someone making decisions for our troops who knows exactly what it means to send a young man or woman to a place where he or she will be the target of gunfire. I would like to see someone making decisions for veterans who understands exactly what it’s like to fight your way back from traumatic brain injuries, and what types of care and support help most.
Of course, rather than either of those things I’d have liked to see Gabby live a life free of gunshot wounds and months or years of painful rehabilitation coupled with lifelong survivor’s guilt. I feel terribly for her. But she’s a tough woman and will use this experience to become better able to serve her country.
I do have a little knowledge of these things–a very little–owing to 1) Working for a time in a job serving the disability community, including doing a lot of reporting on TBI issues; 2) Having a high-falutin’ neurosurgeon in the family and 3) Having a mother who has lingering effects of TBI. So I’m not completely talking out of my hat. I know brain damage is for life, but all of the reports so far of her recovery seem to indicate she’s bouncing back unbelievably quickly. She may have day to day troubles, but I think they’ll be offset by gains in wisdom as she considers overarching policies and strategies.
A watch and a calendar! Fuck!
I’m a little out of it due to adrenaline at the moment. A driver nearly hit me on the way home and I just got a call telling me that he was caught (I reported him but thought surely nothing would come of it) and found to be intoxicated, so I’m a little shook up and potentially a witness in a DUI case =/
But if that’s snark and I offended you in some way, I apologize! I in no way meant to be insensitive and will strive not to be if you explain what I did wrong?
No one is teated on this blog. Except for that one guy, but only because his teeth aren’t so sharp anymore.
The law does not define a kick as “sharp.” It’s when your foot is in motion and touches someone who doesn’t want it. His foot moved to a photog’s knee and touched it. It was, by definition, a kick.
has been any worse that the treatment he’s afforded to others, including colleagues, in his forums.
He apparently picked the right report to “push”; I know a couple of reporters who would have obliged his behavior with his own wing-tip colonoscopy. All things considered, I think Mr. Bruce is truly fortunate that he doesn’t still have to reach down his throat to tie his shoelaces these days.
vote him into office, they will get what they richly deserve.
SpringsPols now? Or are you only posting this because it involves your poster child Doug Bruce?
To me, Doug Bruce is like Gen. Patton. You need him, I love him for his feisty irascible nature, but you also need to put him in his box once in awhile for everybody’s sanity.
And he doesn’t hurt the brand with his antics. They’re fun to watch.
Douglas Bruce is a complete asshole.
Defend him at your peril.
Colorado Springs was located within the boundaries of Colorado. Are you thinking of a different Colorado Springs, perhaps? One in North Carolina, or perhaps Oregon?
BTW, compare him to someone whose accomplishments are on par with his. Like German General von Kluck, perhaps.
have no impact on the rest of the state.
Here’s a for instance; when the health inspectors were fiscally deemed worthless, any business needing an inspection for a license couldn’t open. Child care centers had a huge problem with obtaining or renewing their licenses.
What happens when child care centers send all their kids home for a month or two? What does that do to the entire state’s tax revenue? Our unemployment? Our schools?
The types of races are arguably the worst because they have so much power on the everyday dealings of business, but could be voted in with only 10%.
Bruce is like a problem. For all of us. For the same reason people will be poking their noses into our (yours and mine) mayor’s election. We aren’t the only ones it matters to.
So yeah, in many ways this is a Colorado issue, not just the Springs.
It forces Colo Spgs to have a discussion about taxes vs services
A real discussion requires a dialogue. You can’t have a dialogue with a bully. Bruce is a bully.
But one among the voters and between the voters and the other candidates.
brings attention to the race but not enlightenment. The focus–press and otherwise–becomes on the show, not on conversations between voters and other candidates. It draws attention away from serious discussion.
.
on this very forum,
for having a discussion about taxes vs services a year ago,
and making cuts based on that.
we turned off some streetlights.
we sold 2 Iroquois police helos.
we cut back on inspecting restaurants.
.
curtailed road maintenance, park maintenance, closed public restrooms, and garbage collection from public, spaces, etc., etc., . . . IIRC.
So, the question for 2011 is what’s next???
.
Obama may have bailed out some cities with his “ARRA” bailout, but we still need to stay solvent.
