The Old Ken Buck Is Back

Rep. Ken Buck (R).

Rep. Ken Buck, outgoing chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, angered a broad swath of party faithful by acknowledging Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump after the Electoral College did its thing on December 14, and going to significant lengths to debunk the baseless allegations about Colorado’s election system that also underpinned Trump’s bogus claims the election was stolen. Buck proved willing to accept the election results, albeit grudgingly and only after joining the ill-fated Texas v. Pennsylvania lawsuit to overturn them.

But in case you were wondering whether Buck is actually turning over some kind of new leaf here, maybe positioning for a bid for statewide office despite Colorado’s steady leftward march since he lost the 2010 U.S. Senate race, you needn’t:

Because Buck is the same meanspirited culture warrior he always was, and Colorado stopped electing such people to statewide office a long time ago. Buck’s willingness to accept the 2020 election results doesn’t entitle him to any special deference in a state Biden won by over 13 points. And as Buck is happy to demonstrate any time, his views are far more repellent to a majority of Colorado voters than the last Republican elected to a major statewide office, ex-Sen. Cory Gardner, ever were. Gardner won his office by pretending not to be all the things Buck owns up to with a smile.

Buck’s career ceiling is his safe GOP seat in Congress, and he won’t try to fake otherwise.

It’s just not who he is.

  1. He never left.  The only reason he accepted the results was because he knows the Electoral College is the only thing that enables them to win the Presidency.  He said as much when he said that save for the 2004 Election, a Republican hasn't won the popular vote since 1988.  So, yeah, I wasn't buying it.  When I said that between him, Two gun Tootsie and Stillborn, he was the voice of reason, I meant it in a relative way.

    1. The ACLU already busted those myths. Being inclusive of trans athletes and trans folk generally benefits everyone, since very few are perfect specimens conforming to gender stereotypes.
As a high school teacher, I knew quite a few trans and gender-questioning kids. They tended to be drama or band nerds, which are pretty supportive high school communities, rather than athletes.
When we all feel safe enough to have in person sports again with live audiences, we can debate the merits of trans inclusion in sports.
Gender is a spectrum, like politics or anything else human.

      1. It’s a quandary for idiots like her. Four dollar gas is great for the monied interests who might want to keep this useful idiot in power. Alternatively, meeting climate goals which will include mass electrification of our transportation system will make oil less and less valuable.  She needs to pick a f** lane.

        1. Ah, come on.  She doesn't need to think long range, because her next election is in 21 months.

$4 gas means $115 barrels of oil.  That would mean a heck of a lot more drilling activity, which means more people living in Rifle, which means more customers at the Grill.  I don't know if I've ever heard what sort of oil field work Mr. Boebert does, but he might have enhanced career prospects, too.

Impacts on the Middle East, Russia, increased attractiveness of solar power, rise of electric cars… all those are beyond direct impacts, and so probably don't matter as much.

  2. Isn't this the guy who refuses to wear a face covering and voted NO on every COVID stimulus bill but now he's concerned that the Biden administration isn't paying enough attention to the crisis.  Seriously?

  3. I still think Buck gets an award for wearing a T-shirt that said “Kill them All, and let God sort them out!” It was the perfect summary of the Republican response to COVID.
