1. along with the ridiculous testimony by the likes of Congresspersons Lamborn and Marsha Blackburn, who told us over and over ad nauseum that it’s about the budget!  

   When the question of the need for jobs came up, Ms Blackburn explained that their bill would create many jobs at the local level – actors, announcers, radio station people to take calls, directors, producers etc, for all the new local shows that will be created by this loss of funding.  Huh?  

   Every day I’m stunned about the kinds of people who get elected to Congress.  I like to have faith in the ultimate “wisdom” of voters, but not so much faith these days.

   My theory: Voters are full of anger, frustration, fear and loss of hope, and don’t know who to blame – so they elect people who promise them magic – that smaller and fatally-damaged government will improve their quality of life.  I wonder at what point will people (at least some) begin to see that it won’t work.

   1. I think they voted against the Democratic incumbent figuring that what they had clearly wasn’t working. And that is a reasonable approach – if your choice is what you know won’t work and something that might – go with the alternative that gives you a chance of improvement.

      1. but the unspoken piece of that is that people are not evaluating qualifications, background, judgment, leadership, common sense, ethics, etc, etc of any candidates – only hoping that the “other” will do better.

      2. or four, depending on your goalpost, since Republicans were in control of this country and leading it down the gilt path to destruction.

2. Pass bills that are clearly conservative social agenda checklist and rationalize it by calling it a jobs or budget bill and talk fast. Since taking over, the Republicans haven’t actually produced a true jobs bill but instead they’ve answered that “mandate” America gave them by:

   making triple (or is it quadruple?) sure no federal funding is used for abortions

   defunding the number one provider of women’s health services aka Planned Parenthood

   attempting to destroy the unions

   defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (NPR, PBS, etc)

   taxing healthcare plans, even private ones, that provide for abortions

   attempted to narrowly define what constitutes a rape

   A petition is being signed to make English the official language (major jobs creator!)

   I could go on and on, but you get the idea. The Republicans could give a shit about creating jobs. As far as they are concerned, the higher the unemployment the better their chances at the presidency in 2012. And if the economy continues to improve, they’ll simply say it’s as a result from their “jobs” or “budget” bills. Americans are too concerned with finding jobs, protecting middle class rights, helping disaster victims, hoping nuclear meltdown can be avoided, watching America go to war in another middle eastern country, etc to pay attention to what Republicans and Dems are actually doing.
