At least it's not your Vice Presidents staff.....oh wait...

Apparently Joe Biden’s staff put a reporter from the Orlando Sentinal in a closet to keep him from talking to guests at a $500 dollar a plate fundraiser for Bill Nelson in Florida.

From England’s The Daily Mail

The White House website proudly says ‘President Obama is committed to creating the most open and accessible administration in American history.’

But try telling Vice President Joe Biden’s staff that, after they held a local reporter in a closet for hours after he was invited to cover a Florida political fundraiser because they did not want him talking with the guests

……….

The Orlando Sentinel reporter was ushered into the closet inside wealthy property developer Alan Ginsburg’s Winter Falls mansion, after being told that Joe Biden and Senator Bill Nelson had not yet arrived.

…………..

After 90 minutes he was allowed out to hear Biden and Nelson speak for 35 minutes, before being taken back to the closet for the remainder of the event.

From inside his temporary prison Powers emailed his office from his cell phone: ‘Sounds like a nice party.’

I’m sure Senator Nelson appreciates all that the VP is doing for his reputation down there in the Sunshine State.  Maybe he can run out here to fly-over country and help out Senator Udall with fundraising.  Well I can dream can’t I?

  1. They once invited a single woman to discuss her reasons for moving from London to the country and told her that the story would be about how lovely and simple country life as a small business owner was. They ended up publishing a mostly fictionalized story about her dating habits that implied she was extremely promiscuous. She sued and they settled, but they refused to apologize.

      1. I’ve been trying to verify this story but had no luck.  This ABC story didn’t turn up in my search. Just the same one over and over.

First, this is less dramatic than than the stories that did turn up, all of which made it sound as though he was locked in. This one says he kept sticking his head out and was shooed back in.  Seems like he could have left so wasn’t exactly being held against his will.

Sounds like he wanted to stick around and keep trying his luck.  Maybe that’s why it hasn’t been in all the media, especially on Fox (you’d think they’d have been all over this days ago), as a huge scandal.

ABC does say the storage area also had table, chairs etc. and was being used as a holding room, not an uncommon practice.

Sounds like really stupid staff  over kill, but if he wasn’t locked in, could stick his head out and leave if he cared to resist the “shooing” then it isn’t quite the story it’s cracked up to be. Probably why it’s days old before we’re hearing about it and hasn’t already been all over Fox.

To be fair, though, I’m recommending this for front page, OK Geekster?

  2. you posted this, Cologeek.

I am now certain that Obama is a Kenyan Muslim who is plotting with Osama Bin Laden to take over the world and enforce a law against eating bacon.

    Thanks for the earth-shattering news.

    1. And because Obama is actually none of those things, we should cut Biden’s over-zealous staff some slack when they do anything dumb or embarrassing.

        1. If a Republican had done this, it would be what it is — an amusing, somewhat embarrassing story of overzealous aides. You know what? It’s the same thing if a Democrat does it.

  3. Looks like I’m alone in recommending this diary, just to demonstrate that there’s no lefty cover up conspiracy at play here. Don’t say I never did you any favors. You should have suspected this was much ado about nothing when even Fox hadn’t taken notice for days. Yawn…

    1. That’s not a cover up; it’s incompetence.

Call me when there’s a rope and a more traditional closet involved. In the meantime, someone should train their people better. Yeesh.

      1. attitude that we here at this commie sight conspire to downplay any stories that might make Dems look bad. Was happy to recommend this one and let it stand or fall on its own (cough) merits.

  4. The reporter who was described as “trapped in a closet” or “kidnapped” by Vice President Joe Biden’s staff says the reports that reverberated across the Internet over the weekend dramatically exaggerated the details of his “imprisonment.”

While working as the pool reporter covering a private fundraiser for Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) last Wednesday at which Biden was speaking, the Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Powers was asked to set up shop in what the vice president’s team called “a room used for storage” until Biden and Nelson delivered their speeches, Powers wrote in an account published Sunday night on the newspaper’s political blog.

    And

Though he tried to clarify his experience, Powers said, “I discovered that whatever I said was irrelevant to other bloggers and posters who concluded that I was spin-controlling, continuing the cover-up. Some called me a liar and worse.”

So who are going to believe?  The alleged victim or a British tabloid?  Huge kidnapping, false imprisonment scandal with cover up or kind of funny story?  Eye roll or outrage? You be the judge.

    1. But it is as RG said above, amusing and shows that even the glorious Democratic leadership has less than average intellects making decisions.

Here is some more from the gent who the Dems didn’t want to come out of the closet:

While I was in the closet, getting impatient and annoyed, I snapped a picture with my cell phone and e-mailed it to my editor, Bob Shaw, explaining that this is where I was at, and this is why I wouldn’t be filing anything about the party before the speeches. He wrote up an item and posted it, with the picture, on this blog. His post was a bit snarky. He likes snarky. So do I. I thought it was funny. The post and picture also ran in the Orlando Sentinel newspaper the next morning, along with my write-up of Biden’s speech. People told me they thought it was funny.

      And

The vice president’s press secretary, Elizabeth Alexander, e-mailed me an apology, which I accepted. (Today we talked and she said that the choice of rooms was a screw-up by an inexperienced staffer and would never happen again.) Ginsburg (the owner of the home where the event occured. cologeek) called me with an apology, saying he had known nothing about what happened and was very upset by it, and I accepted his apology too.

If nothing had been done wrong, why the apology?

      Like I said, it’s amusing.
