Shaffer announces for CD4

TUESDAY POLS UPDATE: Release after the jump.

“Our current representative is a politician who has spent much of his career in Washington D.C. as an attorney and congressman.  Somewhere along the line, he lost his way.  Supporting a plan that would end Medicare as we know it was part of a prevailing wind blowing in the wrong direction.  Colorado needs a compass in congress, not a weather vane.”

—–

Not that this is any surprise…

He plans to announce officially tomorrow but put this announcement up a few minutes ago on Twitter….This ought to make Frank McNulty very happy since he insisted that the Dems were drawing a map for CD4 for Shaffer, who (very wisely, I think) refused to be drawn into a public fight with McNulty.

BRANDON SHAFFER ANNOUNCES BID TO UNSEAT CORY GARDNER

Says the incumbent congressman has

“Gone to Washington D.C. and lost his way.”

LONGMONT, CO – Yesterday evening at a small 4th of July barbeque with friends and family, Brandon Shaffer announced his intention to run for Congress in a bid to unseat Congressman Cory Gardner in November of 2012.

Shaffer, a third generation Coloradan and former Naval Officer, made his case to replace Cory Gardner.  Gardner is an ardent supporter of the controversial Republican GOP budget plan-the “Ryan Plan”.

“I’m tired of watching the Washington D.C. game that’s focused on chalking up political points instead of solving problems.   We do things differently here in the West.  We take an independent approach that is rooted in common sense.  I call it ‘Colorado Solutions’ and I want to bring that tradition to the United States Congress.”

This morning Shaffer will file the appropriate paperwork with Federal Election Commission to become a candidate.  Shaffer has spent the last several weeks talking to people in northern and eastern Colorado while making his decision with the input of friends and family.

“Staying true to ‘Colorado Solutions’ means having a strong compass that points to what’s good for the people of Colorado.  As a former Naval Officer who safely navigated a destroyer to the Persian Gulf, I know the value of a strong sense of direction.”

Brandon is a third generation Coloradan and former Naval officer who served two deployments to the Persian Gulf.  He has served in the State Senate since 2005 and was chosen by his peers to serve as one of the youngest Senate Presidents in Colorado history.  He lives in Longmont with his wife, Jessicca, and two children, Madison and Dylan.

  1. Even though I intellectually know that Shaffer’s campaign (and Gardner’s too) will be a big spending flurry of television ads and the like, and that all of this was obviously staged, I still appreciate the effort to maintain the happy illusion that House campaigns are about friends and neighbors gathering in back yards.

    1. Really? Do tell just how many insiders, lobbyists, handpicked appointees, former Markey staffers looking for that return ticket to DC, etc…. were on hand for this family, friends and neighbors campaign kick-off event?

      1. I’m not sure where you heard anything about lobbyists or whatever… but I think it’s a safe bet that Brandon Shaffer’s close friends and family have known he’s going to be running for Congress for some time.

Still, like I said, I do like the touch of releasing a home video shot in a back yard.

      2. yes Libertard, the conspiracy is afoot.  As for “handpicked appointees” you do know he’s not now in office.  So unless you’re talking about the folks he “handpicked” to grab a brew from the cooler or to compost the half-eaten corncobs then not so sure of who you’re suspecting.

As for the self-proclaimed “hardest-working member of Congress from Colorado” Cory did sponsor H.R. 2021 that hastens EPA permitting for offshore Alaskan oil drilling.  Way to bring it home to CO CD-4 Cory!  Thanks for all the jobs!!

          1. that the party was comprised of Oil & Gas lobbyists who were angling to gain influence.  Oh wait that is Gardner’s crowd.

You can always tell when it leaves a mark on them.  They always ask why you are upset trying to make it look like that smack in the kisser was because you’re unstable and emotionally prone.  “Oh you just demolished my bullshit point so why are you so angry?”

  2. I know we’re supposed to look at how effective a legislator will be, what their policies will be, etc. But what has come to strike me more and more about Shaffer over the years is he’s a really likable guy. And he works his ass off for the people of this state.

Now the same was very true for Betsy Markey and that got her in but couldn’t withstand the Republican tsunami. I think the same is true here – Shaffer is dependent on the state of the economy next year (poor guy).

    1. nice to see a candidate strong enough and likeable enough to force the GOP to spend maximum amounts of money to  keep the seat.  At least they’ll have to if Shaffer supporting 527s mount a strong negative campaign, the only thing that can make a dent against an incumbent in a district like 4, focusing on tying Gardner to everything scary in the Ryan plan. The gloves will definitely have to come off to make it interesting.

      1. Someone should focus on the fact that Gardner got more out of state money than any other candidate in the nation in 2010. At least Ryan can get people in Wisconsin to give him money.

      1. In 2010 the average CEO got a 23% raise, the average gainfully employed worker saw 3.3%.  The average American, including the unemployed, of course, didn’t make any significant progress in income at all.  This is what Dems have to pound on and that it’s all of a piece with the GOP/Ryan Reverse Robin Hood Economic Plan, the plan that promises not just more of the same growing gap but at an accelerated rate and also costs more, unless you are among the “what shared sacrifice?” wealthy.

Dems need to do a better job of messaging on the GOP screw the middle class, workers, vets, children, seniors, women and students so the rich can keep getting richer without doing a thing for the rest of us plan and also need to do better messaging on all the jobs that have been saved and that almost every respectable economists says would have been lost were it not for the Obama stimulus plan.

This will be much easier to do along with a message of increasing, if still, modest, improvement which is not all that unlikely to occur in time for the next election, especially if the Dems smell enough blood to stop groveling.  The less they cave to the Rs who absolutely want to keep us all (besides the uber-class) miserable going into 2012 and whose every plan guarantees it will be the case, the better chance for the economy to improve just enough to notice in time.

Let’s hope we see some sign of a change of attitude on the part of Dems in the debt ceiling negotiations.  If we don’t, we’re probably screwed.

  3. and it’s also no secret that he would be light years ahead of Gardner in terms of suitability for the position.

But, am I the only one who’s seeing it a bit odd that

Our current representative is a politician who has spent much of his career in Washington D.C. as an attorney and congressman.

a politician who is himself a politician and an attorney, and who wants to become a Washington Congressional Representative, leads off with an statement that apparently it is a something of a problem to be a Representative, attorney, politican, Congressman, and Washingtonian — or some combination therof?  (Sort of sounds like: That other guy sucks; I’m hoping to become more like him?)

I wonder if Shaffer’s seen the job description for the postion he’s applying for, and the resume he’ll be submitting?

    1. of the John’s bill. We asked him if he was planning to run and he just smiled. Friends who know him personally tell me he is very thoughtful and deliberate, and wouldn’t do anything without making sure it was the right decision for his family, as well as for the district. In other words, I think he took his time making the decision and making sure all his ducks in a row.

That’s the kind of Congressman we need in Colorado.

  4. Well it’s nice to see that Steny didn’t screw it up so bad that Shaffer decided to not run at all. He doesn’t have a chance. NRCC will fight for CD4 harder than any other district, and DCCC knows it.
