Before the GOP tries to brush this off as just a partisan attack, let me confirm that the following paragraphs are entirely correct, with the exception that it will be easy for the party to recover if it is simply reorganized.

No, Larry was not president of the CSU Democrats and to the best of my knowledge has never been affiliated with the Democrats. The controversy while he was at CSU came when he was director of finance for Associated Students of CSU and and a member of College Republicans. He got $312 from student government to attend the 2000 Republican National Convention. In his role as vice chair of the College Republicans he requested the funding, and in his role as director of finance for student government, he approved it. That raised some questions.
Just part of the historical background.

Though I’m not sure that tampering with an election is any better.
I’ve been told that the chair and vice chair had DEBIT cards, but Larry’s was the only one authorized to make ATM withdrawals.
But if the vice chair had a debit card, would that not mean she had access to the bank statements from the account? If not, she was far too trusting of Larry. Also, why did the previous treasurer resign? Think maybe he saw some problems? These things should be investigated.
Based on what I’ve been able to discover, Larry was the only one with access to the bank accounts while they were without a treasurer. (This is confirmed in Jim Alderden’s report to the new executive committee.) Obviously, that’s no way to run a navy. The previous treasurer (a she by the way) hasn’t commented publicly. But her one contribution in her brief tenure was to botch some paperwork to the secretary of state that accidentally cloned the party organization.
Well I don’t know why the board let him get away with that. How is the vice chair supposed to know when it’s ok to use the debit card if she doesn’t have access to the account? What if she overdraws the account? Perhaps a similar situation occurred with respect to Eli Bremer’s power grab last night in the El Paso GOP. People who ask for too much power should be opposed. Transparency and accountability are needed.
It must REALLY suck to be less popular than an alleged criminal.

I loathe your politics, but admire you being big-enough to keep showing up here and getting beat up by shameless bullies day after day after day. Let me know if you ever want to meet downtown for coffee and talk real issues. I used to be a Young Republican as a kid, and did a 180. I still have some conservative views on things you may agree with (regarding “free speech” and unregulated access to the media for child pornographers or soul-less video game companies or dangerous hate groups, for example).
I think bullies like the ones here are the Dems biggest obstacle to growing our base. Dems are good people. If any of these bullies are Dems, please don’t think they represent the rest of us.

I will say, you are probably the first real Dem on here who has treated me reasonably. (Hasan doesn’t count as a real Dem. 🙂 ) Of course, you’re probably also one of the few that is a real Dem in the sense that you do more politically than just spouting off online. Don’t worry about me though; I’ve been at this for a year or so and I have a pretty thick skin. I get it; politics ain’t beanbag.
As far as Dems being good people… there are some, but not most progressives. However, the problem with nice Dems is that they think with their hearts instead of their heads. I have a whole lot of progressive friends (progressive as in “moving forward”) who are calm, rational, compassionate, patriotic people. One out of a hundred seem to be over-the-top sometimes, but the vast majority are great people. I hope you’ll meet some, someday. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Not all fundamentalists/ social conservatives are racists. Not all liberals/progressives are flag-burners. We’ve got to tone down the rhetoric and have more dialogue.

Looking at the bylaws (http://www.larimergop.org/images/stories/lccc_bylaws_2011.pdf) it looks like the President has a fair amount of powers including appointing the treasurer to be ratified by the Executive Board.
However, the Chairman also has responsibilities including “the Chairman shall present the proposed budget for the following fiscal year no later than 30 days prior to the
April Executive Board meeting at which time said proposed budget shall be submitted for approval”.
That makes me wonder what was actually submitted as a budget in March 2010? Most every budget I’ve seen lists previous and proposed income/expense for the organization. Was it fraudulent or was it missing? In either case what do other board members say about their responsibilities in this case?
Why would a person of Latino background be a Republican, anyway?
Or a person of color?
Or a Jew?
Or a member of the GLBTQ community?
Or someone who does not personally make more than $300,000 a year?
Or someone who cares about the less vulnerable in our society (the poor, the elderly, people with learning disabilities, the chronically ill, etc.)
