  1. My wife is a walking encyclopedia of DooWop.  She grew up just across the river from Philly.  She used to come home from elementary school when she was a kid and watch Bandstand on WFIL before it was nationally syndicated, and even before Dick Clark took over (it was originally hosted by Philly DJ Bob Horn).  She knew all the dancers–Justine Carelli and Bob Clayton, Arlene Sullivan and Kenny Rossi, Big Ro and Little Ro–and all the dances.

So the other day we were watching a ball game and a commercial came on for NFL.com.  The song in the commercial sounded like a cross between the theme from Happy Days and “Bristol Stomp” by a Philly group called the Dovells.  Cheryl immediately started singing along.  I said, “You know that song?”  She said, “Yeah, it was by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.”

I had my doubts, so I went to the internet (where else?) and brought up the whole Frankie Lymon discography.  No such song.

Next time I heard it, I Googled some of the words.  Hah!  It was by The Students, another Philly DooWop band! Cheryl was wrong.  I couldn’t believe it.

Lead singer Leroy King sure does sound like Frankie Lymon, though.  Some internet sources report that the singer is Louis Lymon, Frankie’s brother.

Here are The Students, from 1958.

Here’s the B-side, a great ballad.  Nothing like starting the day with a little DooWop.

        1. because it was the loving parent of Motown, which rocks even more.  🙂

One of my kids doesn’t like me to play this song because he says it grosses him out when his parents play “baby making music”. lol

          Make love, not war, baby.

  2. Managed to see the musical last weekend at the Buell.  As is almost always the case, the live performance was better than the movie.

Remember when I was in High School and all of the controversy surrounding Hair made it a social event of the 60’s.  Great music then, great music now.

And all of the controversy (then) about the nude scene – now it’s “so what?”
