Weld County Censors Lifesaving COVID Advice

  • by: Colorado Pols

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: 9NEWS’ Marc Sallinger documents a rare backpedal from arch-conservative Weld County Commissioners:

Commissioner Scott James told 9NEWS that Weld County will continue posting information about vaccines on social media, reversing a stance the commission took during a Nov. 24 meeting.

“I had made a comment in a public meeting about how I was not going to approve any more Facebook posts. I was caught up in the moment about that particular Facebook post,” said James. “It’s not within my purview to change the policies of the board of county commissioners in that manner.”

Many thanks to NoCo Optimist for publicizing this incident, without which it’s very likely there would have been no “walking back” of anything. We are a litttle curious to know who it was who tapped Scott James’ shoulder and explained that he had just earned Weld County more bad press than simply sitting and allowing a few crazies to spout off would have hurt them. We assume it wasn’t fellow commissioner and noted COVIDiot Lori Saine.

Take the small wins for common sense whenever they happen we guess.

—–

Weld County Commissioner Scott James (R).

Via the Colorado Sun, another troubling example of how information that could save lives gets pre-empted from public distribution by Republican politicians overriding their local health departments. Sometimes, like in Douglas County, this causes a massive conflict that results in the firing on the health department and bad headlines for all concerned.

And sometimes, like up in the longstanding hotbed of COVID resistance of Weld County, it goes very differently:

Weld County’s commissioners will no longer publish information about COVID-19 on social media following pushback on posts made to encourage residents to get vaccinated against the disease.

Three members of the public approached the board on Nov. 24, reprimanding the commissioners for posts on the Weld County Government Facebook page – a page also used by the Weld County health department – regarding vaccines.

“I am sick of these Facebook posts that the Weld County Government page is putting on Facebook advertising this vaccine, this gene therapy, to our children,” [Pols emphasis] said Sonia Miller, a Greeley resident. “This is toxic. This is poisonous.”

As soon as these concerned citizens referred to the COVID-19 vaccine as “gene therapy,” most well-adjusted individuals in possession of a basic education would know this is not an opinion that public servants should take seriously, let alone base a decision on.

But this is Weld County, after all:

Commissioner Scott James said he was the one who approved the Facebook post and that he was wrong to do so.

“I will ensure a post that involves a COVID vaccine will not get my approval,” James said. [Pols emphasis]

All we can say is, that’s a remarkable statement to commit to the public record.

Back in May of 2020, readers will recall, Weld County lost their health department director after he disagreed with the all-GOP county commissioners about reopening nonessential businesses in defiance of the state of emergency. As we now know, the health department’s social media posts are subject to the approval of elected officials. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage unchecked in Weld County–with 46 of the county’s 500+ deaths from the disease having occurred within the last month.

In beet-red Weld County, bad judgment was already in power. It took a pandemic to make it deadly.

    1. This guy caved in the presence of two angry, confused butt hurt dullards who climbed out from under their rocks to tell him they just can’t tolerate having Weld county posting vaccine info on social media, then caves the other way when the media finds out. Those are some rock ribbed conservative values right there.

      Professional snowflake projectionist.

  1. I agree with Governor Polis (paraphrased). At this point in time, if someone catches COVID, it's their own fault if they haven't been vaccinated.

    1. To be clear, a fully vaccinated person can still get a breakthrough COVID infection, particularly if exposed to one of the more contagious variants. It’s rare: less than 2% of all Massachusetts cases, for example.

However, that breakthrough infection will probably not lead to severe symptoms or disease needing hospitalization. .. or death. Less than 1% of vaccinated people’s breakthrough infections required hospitalization in Massachusetts.

Studies from India shows that those hospitalized with breakthrough infections are likely to be immunocompromised people.

So while it’s basically true that people getting COVID now are at fault for their illness, there are a few exceptions.

And the Weld County Commissioners, who know better and don’t care to tell the truth to their constituents, are also at fault.

    2. Banger, you are poking the bear, or tree, or lizard, or Blowman and the rest of the group think PolCats. Amazing that Gov. Polis has such a common sense approach.

PolCats hate freedom in Douglas County because they worry that others may be inclined to question the elite orthodoxy. “YOU MUST BELIEVE AND OBEY”……….no.

      1. I enjoy the fact that I’m living rent free in your head, Pfruit. It’s a spacious place. You understand that ‘eternity’ concept comes with its own set of rules, right?  Stewardship of our planet? Care for creation and the least amongst us? Turning the other cheek? That seven times seventy thing. Rich men giving away their fortunes to follow him?

You’re worshipping a cult leader with a penchant for the seven deadly sins.

        1. Welcome to the cranial cavern of Pfruit, my friend. The accommodations are free, but the wind does whistle through here and everything is painted orange..

And the echo can be distracting…but, it's still fun..😄

  2. With a few methodological issues to quibble about, the general information is clear:  the vaccinated are much, MUCH safer.  CO Dept of Public Health & Environment comparisons of vaccinated and unvaccinated are available here .

Based on October's numbers, comparison is the vaccinated are 10.7 times less likely to die.  Those dying are demographically different:  vaccinated average 80 years old, unvaccinated average 73.

Stay healthy enough to avoid hospitals:  according to the report today based on the 88% of hospitals reporting:

    • Number of facilities anticipating staff shortages (within the next week) — 50%
    • Facilities anticipating ICU bed shortages in the next week — 35%
      1. Wonder who that was just yammering a bit earlier about his Douglas County freedumb to die/freedumb to kill (without restriction, such as age)?

Someone who has even the slightest “concept” of eternity would notice that everyone dies . . .

        . . . what’s your point?

        Very sad Pfruit.

      2. "old people die, COVID or not"

Then why are you still with us?

BTW, when your cult leader gathers the flock of faithful to Mar-A-Lago and pronounces a "White Night" (or mispronounces "White Flight"), will you drink the Koolaid like the rest of the MAGA-rati and enter into eternity?

Just wondering how far you're willing to ride this train……
