Buh-Bye, Rick Perry

Los Angeles Times:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who parachuted into the 2012 Republican presidential contest on a surge of upbeat expectations, is expected to exit the contest Thursday, two days before a South Carolina primary in which he was trailing far behind the leaders.

Perry will hold a press conference in North Charleston at 11 a.m., when he’ll suspend his candidacy, according to multiple news accounts.

Perry almost quit the race after a weak fifth-place finish in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses.  But urged on by his wife and supporters, he decided to press ahead, skipping the New Hampshire primary and putting all of his emphasis on South Carolina…

Which, according to polling out today, netted Texas Gov. Rick Perry a whopping 4%. We would say, and we think most would agree at this point, that Perry stayed in this race for far too long after it became clear he was not presidential material. His continued presence in the race held back support from other “Romney alternatives,” and did nothing to salvage his damaged reputation after a string of disastrous missteps hobbled his candidacy at the outset.

Perry will reportedly endorse Newt Gingrich today. While Perry’s 4% support cannot be exactly considered a huge score for Gingrich, in a race as close as this, that margin could matter.

  1. who liked to point out the Texas economy as his qualification for POTUS, as well as to say that he couldn’t be that dumb.

My retort was a) we’re talking about TEXAS here, where the average intelligence quotient isn’t that high, either; b) Texas’s budget problems are as serious as California’s, only you can’t blame the Dems who have been out of power for over a decade (in their state house as well as their governor’s mansion); and c) having an oil based economy will help you through any crisis – at least until the oil runs out. How much credit has the guy in Austin earned for that?

That, of course, is without the need to point out things like the fact that he couldn’t be bothered to memorize which three federal departments need to be axed, even though that’s been one of the hard right’s mantras for decades. It hasn’t been talked about, but I really have to think that they started to wonder if he really was one of them when he flubbed that line.

    1. from his first marriage, hopefully to discredit wife number 2. As a first marriage daughter of a thrice married father, I can tell you that, naturally, both family number 3 and family number 1 have more against number 2 than against each other. In fact number 3 and number 1 kind of have hating wife number 2 in common.

First, number 3 came later and had nothing to do with the break up of family number 1. Kind of did family number 1 a favor by screwing hated wife number 2.

Second, number 2 is a pain in the ass to both families 1 and 3.

So why should anyone believe what daughters from marriage number 1 have to say to the discredit of wife number 2?

And when did number 3 decide to convert Newt to Catholicism?  During the time she was his adulteress mistress and fine with Newt staying in an open marriage with his wife? Or did they both get religion conveniently after?

Any alleged evangelical or conservative Catholic who is fine with this couple being President and First Lady can’t be anything other than hypocritical beyond belief.

      1. why are the children answering for the sins of the father?  WTF is it with women in Newt’s life – please someone explain to me how in the hell this pasty pontificating bullshit spewing pansey garners any sympathy/support from women?

Newt gets to stay seemingly above the fray and not respond to the known “bitterness” of at least his 2nd mistress and uses/ manipulates his daughters as hide-behinds to stand up for his character. WTF??

Newt is a loathesome manipulative weasel.  I want to see his ass & his head handed back on a platter. Let’s see him make it to FL and see the GOP further torn asunder as this faux conservative makes fools of the flock that brays behind his fat ass.

I’m loving this battle royale — Santorum can’t get a bit of limelight with Sta-Puft Newt hoggin’ the news cycle, batshit Bachmann can’t figure out who she does/ doesn’t endorse, TX Rick moseys back to his not-racist ranch for a back pain med fix and Tundra $arah chiming in urging her brain dead minions to make Newt the turd in Mitt’s punchbowl.  Gawddamn, who new the GOP could be this much fun?

  2. That certainly communicated, initially, on a grass roots level.

Not certain suggesting the collective IQ of Texas equating to room temperature will gain many bonus points for Colorado.  Our problems last election were disgorged, ad nauseum, throughout the media.

Perry clearly, and simply, was not ready for “prime time”.

  3. Rick Perry came out of the gates with that Texas swagger that easily devolved into being a bully.  You know the type — snearing at all those less fortunate or not exactly like him.

It’s especially satisfying to see a bully exposed to be a weak phony.

    Oops, indeed.

    1. amazing who the angry idiotic mouth-breathing fundie masses line up behind.  Give them a $arah, a batshit crazy Bachmann, or come-to-Jesus Perry and they’re led like cows to the slaughter.

      1. I am certainly not a Mittens fan, but making fun of somebody because they put in all of the effort to learn a foreign language is by far one of the most ignorant things I have witnessed.  That type of anti intellectualism should scare anybody who actually thinks about things.

It really does serve our nations best interests to have, at least, an intellectually curious President at the helm.  Burying your head in the sand dosen’t help.  Didn’t we just go through this with W ?

        1. even GW knows that Turkey doesn’t have an Islamic terrorist government. I’ve been hearing for years that  many leading figures in the Texas GOP establishment think Perry is as dumb as a bag of rocks but, of course, never for attribution. Stuff like this, the debates, the not being able to name the three government depts he supposedly feels so passionately about eliminating, etc. do tend to give the potential legitimacy of those unattributed sentiments credibility.

    1. Palin, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Trump, Huntsman, ….quitters.

At least Congressman Paul has the intellectual and  moral integrity to stand up and run.   I mean, what does it take something like 1250 delegates to be the nominee, and so far like 17 have been awarded.

Florida is still winner take all, but a solid showing there by not Romney could be telling.  And  I gotta believe that if Perry hung around, he’d have done well in Texas.  Obviously, the fewer candidates left, the more winner take all it gets anyway.  But still – quitters never win.
