    1. Thanks! We're far from done. As it turns out the difference between a web site in theory and operation is pretty big. But we have great developers and they're faithfully working through our long list of fixes.

      1. Alva – I'm on MacBook/Safari.  The threads on my laptop aren't nested, but they are on my iPhone.  Just FYI – you no doubt have that on your punch list! Everything else seems to be in order.

            1. Thanks. We've filed a ticket on what appears to be a browser specific problem. In the meantime please do all the usual cache clearing things and also try a different browser just to see the result there.

  1. EmptyWheel:

The reason Rudy Giuliani was not charged for soliciting election disinformation from a known Russian agent is that the Attorney General of the United States set up a system that separated the investigation of that Russian agent from the investigation of Rudy, all while channeling whatever disinformation Rudy obtained from Derkach (or Zlochevsky) into the investigation of Joe Biden's son.

  2. History from the River to the Sea and Across the Ocean. Josh Marshall at TPM.

I hesitate to comment myself on the extraordinarily fraught Israel-Gaza situation. This article is very worth reading about the maximalist positions expressed on both sides of the conflict.

I feel the problem is due to extremists on both sides, plus the support Netanyahu has given Hamas in Gaza so that he wouldn't have to compromise with the Palestinian Authority on the West Bank.

Josh tries to walk a difficult balance especially given the incendiary statements by the pro-Palestinian protest groups here in the US.

National Students for Justice in Palestine is the national umbrella group which supports and coordinates messaging over two hundred Students for Justice in Palestine campus groups across North America.

On the day after the October 7th attacks, the organization issued this statement as either their first or one of their first statements on the massacres in southern Israel.

“Today, we witness a historic win for the Palestinian resistance: across land, air, and sea, our people have broken down the artificial barriers of the Zionist entity, taking with it the facade of an impenetrable settler colony and reminding each of us that total return and liberation to Palestine is near. Catching the enemy completely by surprise, the Palestinian resistance has captured over a dozen settlements surrounding Gaza along with many occupation soldiers and military vehicles. This is what it means to Free Palestine: not just slogans and rallies, but armed confrontation with the oppressors.”

It seems absurd to imagine that these claims, arguments and demands would not seem to Israelis and to the great majority of American Jews who feel an affinity towards Israel (if not its governments policies) as bristling with hostility and even latent violence. For Israelis in Israel, certainly not terribly latent violence. Palestinians have received far more than their fair share of history’s malevolence and brutality. So the sentiments, angers, demands are no mystery. But this whole tableau speaks to a grand battle of destruction in which only one side will or can be left standing.

It’s hard not to ask: if this is the framework, what possible logic could there be to Israel ever agreeing to a ceasefire? Who agrees to a ceasefire in a battle in which the enemy’s aims are existential?

My advocacy of partition – two states – has always been based on the belief that Israel is strong, entrenched and not going anywhere and can afford to agree to a lasting peace. There are things you’ll do when you’re back is against the wall that you would never and should never do otherwise.
