Republicans Are Stuck With Dave Williams Until At Least Mid-October

Catch him if you can.

As Sara Wilson reported Tuesday for Colorado Newsline, the court trial to determine who is the rightful leader of the Colorado Republican Party is set to begin just over a month from now–not as far off as lawyers for embattled but still holding the office keys chairman Dave “Buh Bye Brandon” Williams were hoping for, but disastrously too late for the leadership impasse that has paralyzed the party’s organizing efforts to be resolved before ballots go out to voters:

A trial in the case between Eli Bremer and Dave Williams, who both claim to be head of the state party, will start on Oct. 14, the same week voters should get their ballots in the mail and three weeks before Election Day itself.

“It is evident to the court that the issues before it need an expedited resolution,” Judge Eric Bentley of the 4th Judicial District said in court on Tuesday morning. “Two separate individuals and leadership teams claim to lead the Colorado Republican Committee. They represent separate factions of the party. They point the party in very different directions and have different sets of supporters.”

…Michael Melito, one of two lawyers for Williams, said on Monday that there is no need for the trial to happen before Election Day, calling the rush a “false red flag” because the “heavy lifting” when it comes to candidate support has already occurred. [Pols emphasis]

Christopher Murray, representing Bremer, said that a delay would only benefit the defendants who are refusing to hand over access to the party’s assets.

Investigating the supposed “heavy lifting” the party under Williams has supposedly already done in support of Republican candidates, today’s Unaffiliated newsletter from the Colorado Sun confirms again what we’ve been saying for months: aside from a few blast emails that cost nothing but the time to write them, the party isn’t doing a thing to help Republican candidates organize for November. What’s more, the email blasts from the state party in “support” of key Republican candidates have become so toxic after the party drew worldwide scorn for imping Westboro Baptist Church’s hate speech that they can credibly be argued to be hurting those candidates more than they help.

The state party’s campaign finance reports don’t indicate the Colorado GOP under Williams’ leadership is doing much of anything to help its general election candidates as November approaches. [Pols emphasis] There have been some emails sent out and a few Zoom calls, but that’s about it.

Many campaigns don’t trust Williams and the National Republican Congressional Committee, which would normally coordinate with the party, is siding with Bremer in the leadership dispute.

Although the trial beginning in mid-October is a nominal win for pretender-chairman Eli Bremer considering Williams’ lawyers tried to push it back until after the election, in practice it’s almost as bad for Republicans in the short run as simply leaving Williams in charge–potentially even worse if a ruling forcing Williams out comes just before the election, throwing the party into existential chaos at the worst possible moment. That outcome isn’t guaranteed, of course, considering that Williams actually received more votes in support at his meeting than votes against at Bremer’s “alt-meeting.” In the meantime, individual candidates and national Republican assets who want to help them are on their own to coordinate their campaigns.

Until the mess gets sorted out once and for all in court, the state party will pretend to function enough for Williams to continue submitting invoices. After Williams lost the only race he cared about and wrecked the party to do so, his interests have diminished. Dave Williams couldn’t win, so perhaps no Colorado Republicans deserve to.

It’s the classic end stage of the bunker mentality.

  1. A month should be plenty of time for Williams to complete the destruction of the Colorado Republican Party. He can even sell the office furniture and Republican memorabilia to pay his salary, if things get really tight.

We Democrats are rootin' for ya, Dave. You can do it!

  2. I'm moderately surprised the National GOP hasn't found it in their interest to take a forceful position and clarify it won't cooperate with one side or the other.

Or perhaps it is one more indication that Colorado is assumed to be off the map for The DonOLD & his Choleric Campaign, so no effort will happen here.

    1. Maybe the RNC chairwoman is too busy trying to launch her music career to tell the Colorado GOP to get their shit together. She's getting some positive buzz for her latest song.

"If your ears have been exposed to the abominable sounds of Lara Trump singing, you might be entitled to compensation." – Travis Akers

The Trumps are quite a scamily.

  3. The Republican "Party" no longer exists, and is not really very important aside from brand loyalty and Tribal Identity..

Wake up to the fact that MAGAts are mostly from outside the Party. Trump is not even a Party guy; he's a Trump guy. Politicians like JD Vance are figureheads for the ideologues, religious fanatics and well-funded right-wing grift machines: Federalist Society, Evangelicals, Leo, etc.

Trump is not even running the REAL presidential campaign; it's the PAC ads and mailer-machine.

The Party Database and distributed turnout activities have been abandoned in favor of Billionaire PACs, Consumer Data sets, TV adverts and Social Media. Remember Richard Viguerie? And, in the present era, whomever took over Cambridge Analytics?

      1. Meiner, you really ought to check out your local Democratic Party HQ  this weekend I guarantee you there are plenty of on the ground turnout operations happening. People are taking slate pieces and dropping them on doorsteps. Organizers are organizing. . New enthusiastic volunteers are eager to help. , Thereis room for you too. You are needed.

Or, you could just stay at home and wring  your hands about how "Democrats are just like Republicans" and "All parties are bad".

  4. We need an update from a loyal Republican. CHB said, (paraphrasing here) Kevin Priola and the “Reasonable Republican Army” would ride in and save the Republican Party in the name of Reagans’ ghost. I guess they have decided to let Democrats and millions of Unaffiliated voters do their dirty work.

No love due the Cheneys, but at least they have some courage…or, at least, no fear of the Orange Horde. Trumps’ threats should be taken seriously.

    1. Not even close to "paraphrasing" because I never said that. As for anti-Trump Rs, you can consider Republican Voters Against Trump, the Lincoln Project, and The Bulwark, for starters. (Disclosure: I financially support The Bulwark)

I sincerely hope that you are enjoying Adam Frisch's latest round of TV campaign ads.

I sent another check to "Adam for Colorado" on September 4. I did think, for a moment, of donating it in your honor, since your mantra is "vote blue no matter who." But didn't.

      1. I have no problem with you sending money to Adam Frisch…not that he needs it. Please feel free to tell him your contributions are to spite me. He inserted a comment about a womans' right to choose in one of his "Republican lite" commercials…so he gets a little nod for that.

I genuinely would like to hear you tell us what the RRA ( Reasonable Republican Army ) is up to. Are you going to save the party of Reagan? Or not?

The Dems will rid you of the MAGAts, since your party can't seem to get it together to do that yourselves. I should think you guys would be a bit more gracious.

      2. Thanks for continuing to post here CHB. I really appreciate your insights and struggles to be an American conservative at a time when your brand of patriotism is considered as disappearing as the buffalo. Hopefully out of the ashes of this abomination in a wig, a better party will emerge with a renewed sense of what it means to be a partner in Democracy.

  5. Thank you for your kind thoughts, GG. Forty plus years ago, I was a conservative who believed that the US Constitution applies equally to all citizens (I won't discuss non-citizens here). My politics haven't changed. But the G.O.P. has gone so far over to The Far Right Dark Side that I'm now a centrist with very mild right leanings.

None of the conservative "Lords of Yesterday" would qualify to be in the G.O.P. of today. There are a few still around. Trump tried to take on Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and she owned him every time. I also like Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). He's good enough that I did a contribution to his campaign a couple months ago.

    1. You're not alone, CHB. When we met, my wife was a registered Republican. Over time, she saw that it was no longer the party she signed on with at 18. She changed her registration decades ago and has even been a Dem Party precinct captain and chaired a couple of behind-the-scenes committees.
