  1. Well at least my gas stove should be safe for the next four years.

And speaking of things with open flames, anybody know when and where the Rob Reiner self immolation is taking place?  Searched the net and haven't found any info when the Meathead will go up in flames. Please post if you hear anything and circle back to me.

    1. Don't be a ding-bat. Your gas stove would have been safe if Harris had been elected. As for Rob Reiner, aren't you talking about a mis-statement from either 2016 or 2020?

    2. Sarcasm is a form of "argument by insult".

It is designed to denigrate, not inform.

I would like to hear supporting arguments for the Trump policies you hope for.

  2. Autocracy Comes to America: "Democracy is a luxury when you can’t pay your bills.” David Urban.

Assessing the newly transformed MAGA-friendly political landscape, the pro-Trump lobbyist and political commentator David Urban said on CNN: “Democracy is a luxury when you can’t pay your bills.”

Democracy as a luxury. Democracy in good times only. Democracy when it suits you.

This mindset – a precursor to fascist regimes in other countries – is why it feels like a white-wash to ascribe Trump’s victory to economic issues. It feels like a safe, socially acceptable reason to cite for rejecting Kamala Harris and the Biden baggage she carried.

It’s easy for political reporters and TV commentators to slip into gentle analysis of the election results by focusing on the economic factors (to the exclusion of misogyny, racism, and host of other drives of the electorate). But it doesn’t necessarily follow that Biden-era inflation and post-pandemic backlash means jettisoning democracy. That’s a choice.

When we talk about democracy as a luxury that means everything that comes with democracy: free and fair elections, majority rule, and the rule of law.

    1. Democracy as a luxury  … and just imagine how people will react when the tariff/sales tax whims of Trump are put into place.  He won’t even need legislation, as far as I can tell, so it is an easy “Day One” option.

Simply put, a tariff is a tax on imports, though not one paid by the exporting country. Rather, U.S. companies seeking to import goods from China, for example, would have to pay more to bring them in….

Democrats on the campaign trail insisted the policy would cost middle-class families $4,000 a year. That number is in line with estimates from the left-leaning Center for American Progress and the right-leaning American Action Forum.

The Peterson Institute for International Economics pegs the yearly cost at $2,600 per household. The Tax Foundation says a 10% universal tariff would increase taxes on U.S. households by $1,253 on average in 2025, and a 20% universal tariff would bump costs by $2,045.

  3. Understanding why Trump won is important in order figure out a way forward.

Harris ran a great campaign, but it was completely incapable of penetrating the MAGA bubble. The media landscape now consists of Fox News, Social Media & Podcasts. To a great extent if you are in that bubble you the MAGA lies as facts, no matter how far-fetched. The economy is terrible. Their eating the cats. Trump is a great business man.

It is insufficient for us to live in the "reality bubble", but I don't have a magic solution. We'll have to do the slog of communication and "I told you so".

I do figure that JD Vance won't be able to win the culture wars, but he is completely capable of breaking NATO, encouraging Russia, raising tarriff-taxes on imported goods, lowering taxes on the rich. This will explode the deficit, and lead to inflation and dramatically higher interest rates.

    1. The sad fact is that disinformation powered this election, from trump, from the media, and from outside actors.  Sadly, that is our new reality.  It is grim and dystopian and it's unlikely to change.

    2. key description, in my mind.

Trump was also on track to become the first Republican presidential candidate to win the popular vote since George W. Bush two decades ago. Trump won more than 72.6 million votes, beating Harris with almost 68 million.

Harris’ performance in the popular vote stands in contrast to Biden, who in 2020 won more than 81.2 million votes, the most ever cast for a candidate in a US presidential election. Trump had 74.2 million votes that year.

Trump won fewer votes in 2024 than he did in 2020 … But the Biden/Harris decay was almost 13 million … Questions about HOW Democrats lost 13 million voters will be an interesting discussion.  My first thought tends to look at all the things Biden was able to bring to the table that Harris did not — male, white, nearly 50 years of public service as "moderate" or "pragmatist",    AT some point, there will be an analysis looking at the two WINNING Trump campaigns as measures of deeply set opinions on women leaders in the current United States.

      1. Trump hasn't won the popular vote yet. Saw an item on Yahoo News earlier today that only half of California's votes have been counted. Which is why the Dems still hope that several of those marginal R House districts in CA can be flipped back to D.

  4. Some ironic quotes from Republicans that woefully underestimated Trump's survival skills, and why they fell into line:

    Some momentous quotes

“The Democrats are going to take care of the son of a b**** for us.” — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to Jonathan Martin’s and Alexander Burns’s book, “This Will Not Pass

“I don’t think he’s going to be in the picture. I don’t think he can. He’s fallen so far.” — former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley around the same time

“We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights. … I truly can’t wait.” — then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson in a private text message on Jan. 4, 2021

I now believe that if there is a nuclear holocaust, Trump will survive along with the other cockroaches.

    1. The only hope for humanity left is Keith Richards, who will also survive nuclear holocaust:

Disliking Donald Trump is nothing new for Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards. In fact, the guitarist told the BBC that back in 1989, he was once so angry with the then-real estate mogul that he pulled out a knife and stabbed a table.

Richards told the BBC in a new interview that when Trump was promoting the Rolling Stones’ “Steel Wheels” tour dates in Atlantic City in 1989, the band arrived to one gig find it billed as “Donald Trump presents the Rolling Stones” — with the legendary band’s moniker in much smaller letters than Trump’s own name.

“I got out my trusty blade, stuck it in the table and said: ‘You have to get rid of this man!’ ” Richards told the BBC.

“Now America has to get rid of him,” Richards added. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you!”

  5. No gloating here. Just checking in on my friends. Life is short. It hit me hard with the passing of my brother a couple of weeks ago. He was a big man with even a bigger heart. I'll miss him! It also remined me that as I age I need to get rid of stuff. Material stuff and relationship stuff. That is why I'm back to wish you well in everything you do. I know that none of you really meant the things you said about me. Sometime it's just fun to make fun of other when you do it with a smile.

My brothers wishes were to be cremated. Does anyone have experience with what the cost of cremation should be? I'm trying to judge if what I paid was reasonable.

    Have a great day!
