Fix the Debt , fix the CEO or fix tax code?
I think Al Lewis and Sarah Anderson both miss the larger problem. 401k’s and IRA’s are some of the only tax deductions for average Americans therefore we tend to dump more money into these vehicles and we are less critical of the results. If you save 15% on taxes yet break even or lose a few points on your investment, you still feel like you came out ahead.
At the end of the day, tax code is the real culprit. Either tax deductions need to be abolished and tax rates need to be lowered accordingly or tax deductions need to be expanded so much so that people do not favor the corrupt market and its corrupt CEOs.

Is it guns, human nature or fiscal pressure?
Here is a partial list of some of the more recent violent attacks involving knives and someone being stabbed:
April 9, 2013 – 14 people were stabbed and injured at the Lone Star College just north of Houston.
April 12, 2013 – 2 people were stabbed to death on a houseboat in St. Petersburg, Florida.
April 13, 2013 – 2 people were stabbed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
April 19, 2013 – 1 man was stabbed in his own home with a large nail in Rapid City, South Dakota.
April 20, 2013 – 2 people stabbed at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York.
April 21, 2013 – 3 people stabbed, 1 dead, in Lakewood, Colorado.
April 21, 2013 – 1 man stabbed in Rapid City, South Dakota.
April 22, 2013 – 1 man was stabbed three times in Anderson, Indiana.
April 22, 2013 – 4 people were stabbed in Bakersfield, California.
April 23, 2013 – 1 man was stabbed by a female companion in Anderson, Indiana.
April 24, 2013 – 3 people were stabbed outside a nightclub in San Francisco, California.
April 25, 2013 – 2 people were stabbed at a Smith’s store in Salt Lake City, Utah.
April 25, 2013 – 2 people were stabbed (1 died) at motel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
April 27, 2013 – 9-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by intruder in her own home in Valley Springs, California.
April 28, 2013 – 3 people were stabbed along Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
This is just a partial list of reported stabbings that have occurred just this month. There were other stabbings cross the country that were not reported or that were not included in this list. That means that more than 42 people were stabbed during April so far; the total is most likely well over 50.http://politicaloutcast.com/2013/05/stabbings-stabbings-and-more-stabbings-why-havent-we-heard-from-obama/
We do live in a violent society, unfortunately. But don't you know it's hammers that kill more people than guns do. The problem really isn't knives. Or maybe it's old iron skillets, or more recently pressure cookers. So confusing . . .
A while back I offered offered the link on this subject so I'm not going to bother again but it turns out it was death involving all blunt instruments, not just hammers compared to death by long gun (rifle) only that made this stat work. Include hand guns and shot guns with your guns and there is no contest between hammers and guns. Guess most people don't use either a hammer or a 22 when they want to off somebody or themselves.
Meant a link, not the link. There's a bunch of fun ones.
Oh, I know. It was Baumgardner who "simplified" the statistic at a public forum on gun violence.
Cut-and-paste from a right wing looney toon site.
Yeah, you're an Anarchist.
Yeah, Curmudgeon,
the website claims to have been "fighting the establishment since 1776"
neat trick..
Back then, the Founding Fathers only had wood-burning computers.
nock, were you aware when you posted this idiocy, as of April 11th, almost a month ago, there had been 3,364 gun deaths IN THE UNITED STATES since Newtown?
Source is Jim Wallace. Huffpo Christian blogger.
I'm not going to do your homework for you, nock. Google it.
3,364 gun deaths would be more than 52 stabbings. By a total of 3,312. If you multiply the stabbings by 5 months, that's 260. 3,364 is a larger number than 260. By 3,104. And that's not counting shootings the last 22 days.
Are you getting any of this?
no
nock, according to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2011, 39,940 people died by gunshot in 2011. 10,000 of those were declared homicides. At 52 stabbing deaths per month, that's 624. 30,000 is a bigger number than 624. By 29,376.
Why would you subject yourself to an ass kicking like this?
You gotta get better to play in this league. I don't think you can. coloradopeakpolitics is more your speed.
42 people stabbed (4 dead) over 15 incidents.
12 dead, 58 injured (Aurora) and 26 dead (Sandy Hook), for a total of 38 dead over two incidents. To look at it another way – it would take 9 months worth of stabbings at that kill rate to equal the total deaths from two incidents.
The purpose of the knife in general is not to kill or injure. The purpose of the gun in general is always to kill or injure.
Yes, guns don't kill people, crazy people do. But crazy people WITH guns sure do bring about a lot of death. Why are you conservatives so hellbent on arming lunatics?
Today's political trivia question:
Thailand/Siam
We have a winner. You get a free movie marathon of The King and I.
Naturally with Yul Brynner as King, it could never be subjegated.
oops…subjugated
Any King who could bust out in song on a whim was not to be trifled with.
OrangeFree is correct, but I am also thinking Brunei.
Depends upon definition of "colony". Of course, I had to use the Wiki.
The big argument from the Republicans against same day registration now appears to be not fraud as that has been totally debunked. But instead they now saw only those worth of voting should be allowed to vote. We've been down that road before.
And in case Arapgoof still can't think of anything other than bribery to account for R County Clerk support (The Colorado County Clerks Association reports that 75 percent of the 64 clerks in the state support the bill and at least 44 of the clerks, some 70 percent, are Republican. Haven't located the exact number of Rs in support but the arithmetic based on these percentages suggests a very substantial portion of Rs in favor ) here's some info with a link to an article that should explain away the mystery for him. Though I'm pretty sure he's not interested in having anything to do with objective reality interfere with his received from on high hysterical spin.

In this case, the problem is two-fold, and represents two different problems:
So, to your point… I don't think we should eliminate deductions. Deductions are meant to encourage certain behavior (e.g. charity). And in this case addressing deductions would only address the problem on the corporate tax side. Doing as you advocate – eliminating all deductions – means companies would pay taxes on money they spend for employees, which could go very poorly for the economy.
For this particular problem, the issue is one loophole (the performance pay exemption) and one special tax rate (the capital gains rate). Remove them both – which I think you'll agree would be simple, and a simplification to the tax code – and this problem is solved. If you want to throw a bone to peoples' retirement funds, limit the capital gains rate to applicable IRA and 401(k) withdraws.
More broadly, the tax system needs a serious cleaning and I think in general everyone can agree on that.
Should have beeen in reply to Nock.
One more shameless plug:
Valverde Bazaar Outdoor Market – an urban pop-up market of artisans, craftsmen, antique dealers, and other local Colorado vendors created to promote a local Denver neighborhood. Food vendors on-site and live music will add to the fun.
This weekend! Saturday, May 4 from 9am – 5pm, hosted by Eron Johnson Antiques, 389 S. Lipan St., Denver, CO.
I'll be there selling my photography, right inside the gate to the north yard. Come on down, support the neighborhood, say 'Hi' – and maybe even buy stuff, knowing that your money will support local small businesses.
Sounds fun. Thanks for being shameless.
Cool event. I'll try to stop by. Not much of a "neighborhood" though, more of a light industrial area. Like so many of those off the Platte, I'm sure the smell of skunk hangs heavy…
Yeah, there's a lot of light industrial in the area – but believe it or not, it does have a neighborhood association which is supporting the event.
Just a suggestion. Could we change the Friday rightie bloviator quote to someone a tad more relevant than the Big Fat Idiot? Really, who pays the slightest attention to him anymore outside of his fading, shrinking radio fan base? His clips are hardly ever even featured as examples of rightie insanity on left leaning cable shows anymore. I can't rmember the last time Jon Stewart bothered to make fun of something Rush said. Could we find someone a little less over ?
How about nominations followed by a vote for a new zany rightie for the Friday quote?
BC, let's stick with El Rushbo. At least he understands he's selling soap. Better him than other leading
lights'' of the far right, such as Hannity, Beck or Levine.
I'm just thinking in terms of somebody who has the kind of influence Rush once did. Making fun of Rush has lost its entertainment value for me since he no longer matters at all. It's like poking a fat old sleepy dog with a stick. Yeah Rush said something else stupid. What else is new and who cares?
