Interesting phone poll

  • by: KerryRyan

So I just got off the phone with a polling company.  Lots of questions (poll was over 20 minutes) about extending term limits for the Denver District Attorney from 3 terms to 4 terms.

It sounded like a standard, and not a push poll.  I was asked to evaluate several arguments both for, and against, increasing the term limits.

I did not know this was in the works, I guess it is…at least if it polls OK.

  1. There is an argument that rule judicial districts need longer term limits because the supply of prosecutors qualified to be DA is thin enough to make the booting of the most qualified one in the county if that person holds the office a tragedy, since no one else nearly as qualified for the job may be available.

But, Denver has such an abundance of qualified lawyers for the job that it is hard to imagine that the benefits of having a decent incumbent DA holding the job make sense, particularly given that Denver is a pretty much single party judicial district, which means that it is very hard for Democrats to challenge an incumbent DA in the primary process and very hard for a Republican challenger to mount an effective campaign in a general election.

Given the lock that an incumbent Democrat has on the spot and the ample supply of qualified replacements, Denver is the worst place in the state to have longer term limits for the position.
