UPDATE: Fox 31's Eli Stokols interviewed Markey on Sunday, and the official announcement is Monday morning:
On Sunday, Markey told FOX31 Denver she believes her experience in the private and public sectors will make her a better fit for the job than Treasurer Walker Stapleton, a Republican.
“As a small business owner, I have managed the investments and finances of two successful small businesses; and as a public servant, I have worked with state, local and federal officials on issues from budget reform to job creation,” Markey told FOX31 Denver.
“I think my varied experience, 30 years of experience, makes me a better fit. Colorado deserves a person who’s going to do this job full-time,”
That last bit is the line that you should expect to hear regularly repeated about incumbent Walker Stapleton, whose second-job moonlighting was always going to be a major issue in 2014.

We first reported in March that Democrats were trying to recruit former Rep. Betsy Markey to run for State Treasurer, and it appears as though she is close to making the news official.
From what we hear, Markey may announce her intentions to challenge Republican Walker Stapleton as soon as next week. Currently, State Treasurer is the only statewide office up in 2014 that does not have a Democratic candidate.
Markey served one term in Congress (under the old CD-4 configuration) after defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave in 2008. A successful small business owner, Markey served as Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Relations under Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano from 2011 until resigning last spring.

Go for it, Betsy. It's an important job and a winnable race.
I'd love to see Betsy in as treasurer.
This could be a tough race to win, but I think it's doable.
Stapleton has kept a low profile, especially compared to Gessler – perhaps too low of a profile. His name is almost never in the news. Normally with today's Republican Party that's a good thing since it's almost always bad news, but Stapleton's been the next best thing to invisible – a wallflower. If he loses re-election, it will be more because he has no name recognition than from anything else (though I suppose I should give him the space in the runup to the election to prove me wrong, either by distinguishing himself or by making a colossal screw-up).
Someone did not wait.
