Colorado GOP Rages At Rep. Joe Salazar (And Sarah Silverman)

Sarah Silverman.
Sarah Silverman.

A press release from the Colorado Republican Party today lays into Rep. Joe Salazar (D-Thornton) over the above "Retweet" of (full disclosure) one of our favorite comediennes, the lovely and gracious Sarah Silverman:

One of Colorado’s most embarrassing and controversial legislators is calling for the rape of Gov. Scott Walker, R-Wis., over legislation that requires doctors to provide an abdominal ultrasound before conducting an abortion.

“It’s fine to disagree with Gov. Walker, but it’s not okay for Joe Salazar to call for the governor to be raped,” Owen Loftus, Colorado Republican Committee spokesman, stated.  “Rep. Salazar’s tweet is demeaning and offensive to victims everywhere.”

On July 5, Salazar retweeted a comment from comedian Sarah Silverman stating that she would “very much like to anally probe @govwalker…” and linked to an article about the ultrasound legislation Walker signed into law…

"Where is Democrat Speaker Mark Ferrandino?  Does he think it’s acceptable for House Democrats, under his leadership, to advocate for the rape of those with whom they disagree? ” Loftus asked.  “It is time for Speaker Ferrandino to step up and remind his Democratic colleagues that is never okay to advocate for or joke about rape.”

We're truly surprised that the Colorado GOP thinks state Rep. Joe Salazar of Thornton is a target worthy enough to risk invoking this rather horrifying mandatory Wisconsin abortion ultrasound bill–yes, we know, his idiotic remarks about women defending themselves with guns did make headlines for a brief period during the gun legislation debate this year. But the calculus of going after him over this "Retweet" of a famously raunchy comedienne nonetheless baffles us, since Rep. Salazar is both safe and relatively obscure–while the signing of this controversial abortion restriction bill by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is national news

Also, Sarah Silverman has somewhere around 4.4 million Twitter followers. So, when she hears about the Colorado Republican Party's outrage at her suggested addition to Gov. Walker's decision making process, the response (@cologop, make sure to include the #COpolitics hashtag) will be quite…memorable. Most Democrats would heartily agree: what the Colorado GOP needs right now is to open a new front in the "war on women."

That'll be soon, so get that next press release about Wisconsin's Republican ultrasound abortion bill ready, smart guys! The damage this does to a party already losing with Colorado women is worth a lot of Joe Salazars.

  1. actually, I don't read it as advocating rape. It does advocate seeking how Gov Walker reaches such shitty decisions. So, where would one look?

    1. Expressing the desire to the act doesn't necessarily mean rape, unless Colo GOP (and now Rep. Sonnenberg) are saying the prope itself is rape.  In which case we must ask if–and why–they support Gov. Walker's efforts.

    2. I'm pretty sure any probe of Walker is going to reveal fuzzy pictures of at least a couple little Kochs …

(… or maybe that would be vice versa?? …)

  2. "Open a new front?"  Really Pols?  I stand with Silverman and Salazar on this one, but really gotta question your use of that phrase where anal probes are being referenced!

  3. I think Pols would be bothered by this if it were a GOP legislator retweeting the same comment made about a Democratic elected official by, say, Rush Limbaugh.

Which isn't to say that Silverman doesn't have a great point. But it's one that Salazar could make in his own words without inviting unnecessary controversy over language.

    1. What controversy? All I see here is a potential for  transparently manufactured rightie outrage, given that we haven't heard a peep out of any rightie equating state imposed vaginal probes with rape.

I say, bring on those hypocritical complaints. Let them explain why they hold physical autonomy for males to be too sacred for wisecracks while denying that women should have the right to any such thing. Let them explain why it's different because women can't be trusted to make their own decisions without being subjected to medically unnecessary vaginal probes and other invasive procedures. If that's "controversy", bring it on. Expose these throwbacks for what they are.

Salazar hasn't done a bit of harm with this. Quite the opposite if you ask me.

      1. It's not the civil discourse I expect from someone serving in an elected capacity.

You say that "they hold physical autonomy for males to be too sacred for wisecracks." Well, I do too – though I certainly hold physical autonomy for women to that same standard. So I won't endorse a comment, even in jest, that suggests that the uninvited invasion of someone's body is okay.

If Scott Walker were to reply with, "I'd sure like to anally probe Sarah Silverman!," you'd find it repulsive not only because of the hypocrisy but also because it belies a low-minded, sophomoric, class-clownish attitude about the very serious issue of rape.

        1. You left out the last part of Silverman's comment. This is clearly a reference to having one's head up one's ass.  And I still haven't heard any righties call vaginal probes rape. I wasn't commenting on questions of taste, merely that any rightie complaints in connection with this comment are guaranteed to do them more harm than good by revealing what they are. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not fond of the stands taken by righties against female intelligence, autonomy and access to health care so when they invite ridicule by revealing their pearl clutching, self righteous hypocrisy, I find that to be a net positive.

        2. So I take it that you are opposed to the forced vaginal probe for women and do not approve of Gov. Walker's signing this legislation…. or governors in any state doing so, right?

          1. Are you asking me? Of course I'm opposed. It's a ridiculous proposal and, as BlueCat alludes to above, insulting to women. The implication of the legislation is that women don't understand what abortion is – when a woman who's considering an abortion knows way the hell more about her situation than Scott Walker.

  4. Oh I hope she helps educate those Republicans trying to make this an issue.  She is one woman I would like to have as a close friend.  And, she is funny too.

  5. Silverman compares transvaginal ultrasounds to anal probing. Colorado GOP compares Silverman's anal probing comment to rape. Therefore, Colorado GOP thinks of transvaginal ultrasounds as rape? That's what it sounds like to me.

I'm with Littletonian. While I have no problem with Sliverman saying what she said (she's a raunchy comedian, this is what she does for a living), any politician should steer clear of any tweets or retweets that contain the word "anal" in them.

    1. Actually the point is that they obviously only think of such assaults on male autonomy as rape. On the other hand, they believe it to be perfectly reasonable, women not to be trusted to make their own perfectly legal reproductive decisions without government supervision, to insist that females submit to probes before exercising their legal rights. They clearly do not think of government imposed vaginal probes as rape.  They clearly believe punitive invasive measures used solely as a means to attempt to prevent women from doing something perfectly legal but with which they disagree is A OK. You've kind of lost the thread of your argument there.

    1. If your GOP bretheren weren't so obsessed with sticking your opinions in women's private places where they don't belong, you wouldn't have to be so scared about the ass-fucking that's in store…..

Just relax, and think of Reagan.

      1. That old amnesty loving, tax raising,  deal making, deficit exploding RINO?  On the other hand he pre-dated Rove as an early champion of self created, as opposed to fact based, reality so points for that.  But that was probably just the dementia talking throughout the better part of his two terms. Along with TR and Lincoln, he wouldn't have a chance at a GOP nomination now but then I can't really think of a past R president who would.
