At Least He's Not Your Congressman

Rep. Mike Coffman, left, hoping Rep. Steve King won’t say something awful

Iowa Rep. Steve King, classy as always. From Politico:

Rep. Steve King is defending his remarks that drew criticism from his own party leadership that the children of some immigrants were being used as drug mules.

King’s initial remarks came in an interview last week with Newsmax. While discussing the DREAM Act, which would allow children brought to the country illegally by their parents to qualify for citizenship, King said supporters were incorrectly depicting the children as valedictorians…

“For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,” King said. “Those people would be legalized with the same act.”

This certainly isn't King's first foray into WTF land, and it doesn't do the Republican Party any good for him to express such open disdain for Latino immigrants. Every time King makes remarks like this, it hurts Colorado politicos like Rep. Mike Coffmanwho has supported some of Rep. King's strident anti-immigrant policies.

    1. BREAKING: Tancredo demands King apologize: "How dare he minimize the threat of illegal immigration. Their calves are at least the size of honeydews."

  1. This outrageous comment leaves no doubt. Rep. Steve King is a despicable piece of human excrement. The people of iowa should be very ashamed.

    1. When Lesley Hollywood disinvited from the Tea Party event for Cory Gardner a few years back it was because (by recollection on my part from what she told me) he had told her (after some other controversial remarks on his part) that he wanted race relations to boil over.  Or something like that.

      A real piece of work

      1. From June 20, 2012 (since taken down from Facebook) by Lesley:

Lesley Hollywood commented on her link:

The issues I had with King had to do with the type of event we were hosting (it was a community outreach event) and remarks he made to me on the phone about wanting to bring the race debate "to a boil" in this country and the Tea Party needing to take it on.  When I disagreed with him he told me I needed to get a spine.  This really concerned me – because I had no idea what he was going to say on stage at our event.  He was very rude to me on the phone.  And I'm not interested in spending my already stretched to the max time on a race war.  We have bigger fish to fry.

So it was the race debate and not race relations.

            1. I was in extensive phone contact with Lesley during that time.  That is in no way what she was saying or seeking to imply.  And she actually got a ton of grief from this with Boyles and Tancredo going off on her on KHOW for about a week for withdrawing the invite….yet she refused to back down on that.

              1. Then "we have bigger fish to fry" than a race war was unfortunate choice. Perhaps she didn't want to say anything non-racist enough to tick off the base.

      1. Coffman has a chance to distance himself if he would come out in support of the DREAM 9.  Let's hope he has the good sense to try and take it.

        1. I just hope, whether he supports Dreamers or not, that he loses his next election so we can have a better quality Rep. With Coffman as my present Rep., that wouldn't be much of a bar for a Dem opponent to clear.  Although my GOP state senator, Conti,  does make him look pretty smart. But so would a  rock.

        2. Coffman has a chance…… come out in support of the DREAM 9.

Never gonna happen- unless, and only unless, it's DOA in the House and the vote is before his election heats up ..say August '14.

  2. Tandredo won't condemn the remarks in my opinion. e rallies his base with his racism towards immigrants. I don't understand it, considering that he has supported South Sudan over the years. I don't thiunk he can win, nor the Repuclicans, with anti Latino positions. Should be Hick in a cake walk. Nevertheless, things never play out the way I think they should. If there is no 3rd party candidtae, it will be closer. In 2010 the Republicans  had no chance with Tancredo and Maes in the race. Hick polled 51%. That could be the margin again. This year it would mean 51-49.

    1. You might remember that the southern Sudanese were Christians fighting a battle against oppressive Muslims.  Perhaps that explains Tancredo's interest in that but not this.

  3. And about those oversize calves. Genes play the biggest role there. Either you're born with the genes for big ol' peasant calves, as I was, or it's very hard to develop them. That's why Dwight Howard has the superman shoulders, chest and arms and the birdlike legs and I had big calves as an otherwise toothpick skinny 9 year old. I'm sure Dwight has tried his best.

    1. I wondered about that "calves the size of canteloupes" comment…..who knew Steve was a leg man? And how in the name of Larry Craig did he conjure up that mental image?

  4. Allison Sherry in today's Post certainly didn't cut "New Coffman(tm)" any slack over his sudden turnabout on immigration and the DREAMers, noting "Old Coffman's" vote from just last month:

Coffman's sentiment contradicts earlier statements he has made against the DREAM Act and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented adults. It also contradicts his vote last month to defund President Barack Obama's executive order allowing DREAMers to apply for temporary work permits.

Coffman attributed his change to the newly discovered GOP Theory of Evolution:

Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from Aurora, presented a softer view Tuesday — an opinion he acknowledges has evolved because his newly redrawn district is now 20 percent Latino.

He even got in a subtle sop to women by tossing in a gratuitous remark associating himself with his female counterparts to demonstrate his "sensitive" side:

"Every congressman and congresswoman always, I think, feels an attachment to their constituents, and quite frankly my constituents have dramatically changed,"
