Hudak recall leader registered to vote in Hudak's district the day after the recall campaign officially started

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Reporters covering the Hudak-recall campaign should note Wednesday's Spot blog post by the Denver Post's Kurtis Lee, reporting that a "leader in an effort to recall Democratic Sen. Evie Hudak registered as a voter in the lawmaker’s district Oct. 5 — a day after organizers were certified by the secretary of state to begin gathering signatures to have the recall placed on the ballot."

Lee wrote:

Mike McAlpine was a registered Republican from Boulder, but on Oct. 5 he changed his voter address and party affiliation to unaffiliated, according to Colorado voter records. His new address is the same Arvada address as Laura Woods, the woman who on Oct. 4 had the recall petition format certified by the secretary of state.

McAlpine could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday.

The newly registered Arvada voter — and Hudak constituent — told The Denver Post in a recent article, “We’re not being heard. We have legislation without any real representation.”

Reporters should also note that McAlpine wasn't just a run-of-the-mill Boulder Republican before suddenly becoming an extroverted unaffiliated voter in Arvada.

McAlpine was a Boulder Republican precinct leader as recently as February, 2012.

This might explain McAlpine's apparent ties to Rocky Mountain Gun Owners Association Director Dudley Brown, a well-known GOP operative. McAlpine's new Arvada voter-registration address, 7034 Carr Street, was cited in an email from Brown as the staging ground for the first day of Hudak-recall convassing.

In a "A Personal Note from Dudley Brown," Brown emailed supporters:

"The Recall Hudak Too group will be starting to gather signatures TOMORROW, Saturday, October 5th [BigMedia note: This is the same date McAlpine registered to vote in Hudak's distict]. Here are the details: Recall Hudak Too, Saturday, October 5th, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., 7034 Carr Street [BigMedia note:This is McAlpine's voter-registration address], Arvada, CO 80004.

Bottom line: Going forward, journalists reporting on the Hudak recall should state, when quoting spokesman McAlpine, that McAlpine registered to vote in Hudak's district the day after the Hudak recall officially started.

It's obviously relevant information because it brings into question the legitimacy of McAlpine's complaints about Hudak, since he hasn't even been one of her voting constituents. This information deserves to be kept front and center in recall campaign coverage.

  1. Duly noted, and thanks for pointing that out. Another factoid of interest:

The registered filing agent for the "RecallHudakTOO" committee registration, Tom Bjorklund, lives in Grand Junction, Colorado,  he worked with anti mail ballot activist Marilyn Marks on complaints about Mesa County Elections. Tom and his wife Shari, have both been unsuccessful GOP candidates. Mr. Bjorklund has also been active in  a 527 organization working for Ken Buck. Mr. Bjorklund is also currently the registered agent for the Tancredo for Governor committee.

Information about Tom Bjorklund's involvement with election challenges in Mesa County was  reported by Pols poster "Konola". Claudette Konola is also a candidate for state Senator in Mesa County.

So neither of the two people who initiated this campaign lived in Hudak's district. Neither were represented by her. And both have long histories as GOP operatives.

  2. What is it with right wing carpetbaggers from Boulder? First Caldara commits vote fraud in the Springs, now this "Arvada beekeeper."

I never thought I'd say this, but let's keep Boulder out of our politics! 🙂

          1. I'd rather dine with Tony "The Ant" Spilotro …. [but please, we'd all enjoy reports from time-to-time].  That picture looks like a scene from "Arrested Development".

          1. BTW, that picture needs a thought balloon over the retriever . . .

            something along the lines of:

I can at least lick myself — what are these four tools are good for?

  3. I finally believe that we actually do have a problem with voter fraud… it's people fraudulently changing their addresses just to vote in a particular election.

    1. And all rightie people. Makes sense. Committing voter fraud because that's apparently the only way they have available to prove it exists and becoming politicians and getting elected to government so they can prove that politicians suck and government doesn't work?  Kind of all of a piece.

      1. Gerrymandering, disenfranchisement tricks, caging, voter intimidation, astroturfing, carpetbagging, etc.  Anyway to cheat and subvert our democratic process. The GOP of today.

  4. Grand jury indictments are on the way after we remove AG Suthers from his position as a Teabagger-Lawyer-In-Chief.

Republicans are finished here in Colorado and will be largely ignored for the next 20-25 generations.

  5. I spoke to a constituent in Hudak's district (for the seven years I've known him, probably longer), far from a carpetbagger. He specifically told me of a time at a town hall when the Senator would NOT listen to his reasoning on a number of policy issues. This guy is a lover not a fighter, is far from confrontational, to the point that sometimes it takes him awhile to spit out his thoughts. I say that to reason that his side of the dialogue with the Senator was done in taste and not aggressive or confrontational.

So sure, this McAlpine character is new on the scene and making claims that seem fuzzy. But there are others who make the same claim with legitimacy.

    1. I am a constituent in Hudak's district.  From what I have observed up close about Hudak I would be surprised if she treated someone rudely at a town hall meeting unless they were rude first.  However, assuming for the sake of argument that did happen, it woudl be a reason to vote against her in a general election, not a reason to recall a duly elected state senator.

  6. Hudak has over 80,000 constituents.  She can not vote in accord with all their desires.  Nor can she indicate that she is in support of all their ideas. She has an incredible number of town hall meetings.  I wasn't there, but perhaps your friend found she didn't accord him enough time.  There is always a limit on time.

I can remember a tiem when I was at my Republican representative's townhall meeting, and how we had to stand in line to speak, and only had a brief time (and in that Representative's case, many were treated to insulting statement…I was, but it was mild.  Another man, who spoke on environmental issues, was accused of lying…with no proof, in front of a group of constituent).  Alas, it is all in the view of the speaker.
