We understand that secession is an interesting topic this Election Day; after all, the idea of trying to secede to form a new state isn't something that you normally find on the ballot. But as conservative politicians increasingly try to distance themselves from the topic, we would remind our friends in the media and around the state to keep the secession effort in the proper perspective.
A vote for secession is a symbol, to some degree, that some rural Coloradans are increasingly frustrated by the growing (and inevitable) population shifts to the Denver Metro area. Yet while 11 counties are voting on secession today, many more rural counties chose not to even put the issue on the ballot. And of those that are voting, their total population represents less than 7% of Colorado's population. Less than half of that 7% will cast a vote one way or the other for secession, and it would take about 60% of those voters to surpass the 100,000 mark.
In other words, the bluster of secession doesn't actually add up to much. When all of the votes are counted, it is quite likely that less than 2% of Coloradans will have voted in favor of seceding and forming a new state. It that still an interesting story? Sure, as a footnote. But as a significant political movement? Nope.

Forget succession. Can the rest of us vote to expel these dweebs? With the exception of my beloved Phillips County, I'd happily get rid of these Tea Party welfare bums. They take far more from us in services, especially the Highway Users Tax Fund, than they pay in. Let the unwanted 10 form a WingNutistan and start paying their own way for once.
I hereby vote that these secessionist dweebs move to Wyo-fucking-ming immediately, by force. And be happy with their rights.
Sorry about being the English language police but that would be "secession". succession is what will happen when QE2 dies.
First they came for the 2%…
Totally inappropriate Holocaust reference.
No-one's coming for anyone (unless y'all take up arms and try to rebel, in which case you deserve to be reminded that the US Army is a bit bigger than you are…)
Awesome. Godwin in the first reply.
Please note for future reference, that you are expected to wait until at least the 20th reply before doing a Godwin.
Sorry lefties, but the way you run down rural Colorado around here that was perfectly appropriate. You bring up the Nazis whenever you want anyway.
FYI — Obamacare covers emergency Whaaaaaambulance calls. 😉
And mental health. n3b needs to be institutionalized for at least 30 years. In a brand new Obamacare covered institute appropriately named "Ronald Reagan Mental Health Center" – for a change, that's where all the Tea Party morons and RMGO strokers should go to for at least a minimum of 24 months.
We don't run down rural Colorado. We simply point out that if you are a rural voter living in a state that is mainly not rural, deal with being a small minority and don't expect special more than one vote strength per voter privileges.
What we've mostly run down here concerning secession are the cynical politicians, many of them trying to maintain distance now that it's come to an election, who have promoted something they know to be a total non-starter. And it's a good thing there is zero chance for secession to get by all the state and federal roadblocks because seceding would be the worst thing that ever happened to the people of these counties who would be plunged into a level of poverty and disfunction the likes of which they never dreamed possible in 21st century America.
Next time any of these dumb assholes involved in this secession nonsense go to Denver or DC with hat in hand expecting special treatment, the appropriate answer should be fuck you.
Losers !
Sure, the language here is totally inappropriate, but I'm glad to see Democrats with some fire. My, how things have changed. I guess that's what 2 wars funded on borrowed money due to tax cuts on the wealthy will do to an electorate. Even if the GOP plays nice in 2014, next November could be sneaky strong for Democrats, esp. if the unemployment rates starts approaching 6%…
Being a disgruntled hinterlander is as old as mankind's living in cities for god's sakes . . .
I was living in Western Nebraska in the 1970's when their Panhandle was rattling about secession because those big city folks in urban Lincoln didn't fully appreciate their corn growers, or something. (There was even an article in Time magazine about that particular disgruntlement.)
Pissing and moaning about not being appreciated by the city folk is a rural pastime, a hobby — probably because there's so little else to do out in the puckerbrush.
These Weldistani's aren't serious people, and simply can't be taken even a little bit seriously. They're mostly just bored and in need of a nightlife . . .
Bet North Dakotans complain about the city slickers in Fargo and don't say much about how much more each and every one of their votes counts in the US Senate than anybody else's.
Oh, you just know that all those smug assholes in Fargo — what with their fancy stainless steel dining utensils, their hot and cold running water, and their fluffy rolls of toilet tissue — have completely lost touch with the day-to-day of "real" North Dakotans !!!
Isn't your Mommy's basement in like Highland Ranch or something? When was the last time you were in 'rural' Colorado. Where was it?
Comparisons to genocide that aren't actually genocide are offensive to those whose people have been the victims of real genocide.
Your whining in this tack only reinforces the notion that you're an offensive fucking idiot.
You republican crybaby. Secession is going nowhere. LOSER.
Rural Colorado, the land of racist republican nuts.
I had to look it up at Wikipedia Dave but you definitely get todays "Bingo!".
Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies[1][2]) is an assertion made by Mike Godwin in 1990[2] that has become an Internet adage. It states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."[2][3] In other words, Godwin said that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.
I have to ask if we're so soft Numb times 3 Butthead then how can we be Nazis? You're afraid Softies are gonna come take your itty bitty AK-47 by force? What a stupid imaginary fear.
You are a piece of human garbage, n3b. Nobody is coming to throw the people of any county into concentration camps to starve, torture, gas them to death, perform "medical' experiments on them and then burn them in ovens or bury them in pits. All that happened to your poor 2% is that the majority passed a couple of pieces of legislation, including mild gun safety measures, that they don't like.
Instead of concentration camps, we have something here called the democratic process and it involves voting and seeing who and what gets the majority of the votes. 2% isn't going to generate a majority of the votes.
Fortunately for Colorado, people as thoroughly loathsome as you are probably are not even 2%.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am damn sick and tired that the legislature does not always vote as I want. So on the next ballot I'm going to propose that my house secede to form the state of Davidistan.
And step 1 will be the state anthem – something Euro-pop I think.
How about Boy George and the Culture Club? – Karma Chameleon?
Damn Euro-socialist!
In my seperate state, Bluecatistan, electric blues will be the official state music, good ol' heavily blues influenced rock, classical, jazz and all forms with strong ties to those roots and opera will be approved and encouraged. Euro-pop, any of the crap that passes for contemporary Country and anything in the pop style promoted since the advent of American Idol will be banned. Absolutely. No exceptions. All hot dogs will be served classic Chicago style. All chocolate will be dark.
Hey we agree on something.
I think Country Music is God's way of proving some people have no musical taste.
Now there's plenty of great traditional Country but you don't hear any of it anymore. Your Cheatin' Heart is one of the world's great songs. And I do like real Texas Swing (perhaps the only good thing to come out of Texas) and love Rockabilly. And Zydeco. I'm not anti-country, just anti-soulless pap.
In Twitty-city noobs will be made to be useful one way or another. No conservative whining free-loaders allowed. Who is John Galt? He's that guy back there shoveling goat dung in the barn. From each according to their ability and all that.
Good luck finding two people in your state willing to serve in the Senate.
Hey, I already know dozens.
The Conch Republic in the Florida Keys had a much better secession argument (well, let's say it was more entertaining) than these morons in Colorado.
And yet they're still part of Florida.
The Conch Republic was always more about a state of mind though there was some minor huffing and puffing in the 70's and 80's. Mostly just puffing. The state of mind is still there but a little harder to find in Key West.
This bunch are just a bunch of whiners who want to turn back the clock to the 50's when the rural folks did run the state. Maybe they were the idiots who put acoustic tiles all over the original ceilings and wall paper at the Capitol.
My theory why the seccessionists are so adamantly opposed to background checks of any kind is that it prohibits sales to known criminals and domestic abusers which means they won't be able to buy guns from or sell them to their friends.
Well, the results are in and SECESSION it is.
I say we start the defunding operation in January and see how they like it.
Hey–just a thought/question: Aren't these secession clowns the same ones who show up every January at the National Western to prove how much of a "cowboy" they are?
(F.Y.I., I once worked at the NWSS–and the Stock Show was the only time most of those horse apples EVER wore cowboy boots).
