  1. Facebook Buying WhatsApp For $19B – this is another example of the changing economy that the government is not even recognizing, much less trying to address. WhatsApp has 50 employees total and is in the process of eliminating a ton of profit for the existing telecom companies.

    The end result will be hundreds of thousands of jobs gone. The telecom companies losing their incredibly profitable SMS revenue is like the newspapers losing their classified revenue.

    And this is also how we will continue to see increasing income inequality in the world as those creating killer products get paid very well for the effort. I'm in favor of that as the old model was the Wall St firms made all the profit and I prefer that it goes to the people creating the product. But the end result is increased income inequality.

    1. So if we have creative job destruction going on, which I agree is a good thing, why add to that with non-creative job destruction?  

      Here are some of the faces of the 2.5 million Americans who were liberated from the drudgery of their jobs when Mark Udall voted for Obamacare:

The 2.5 M figure is not lost jobs, as even the most stupid troll shoudl realize by now, but less workers IN THE FUTURE.  Which means anyone pretending to show photos of such is really a POS turd making light of real Americans in a tough time, even as they support policies to cut them off food assistance and unemployment.,

    This is what is called smelly lying self-loathing no integrity bullshit.  Maybe they are proud of themselves.  If I would a parent of such a no worth individual not quite fit to be a member of our shared endeavor  here, I would weep.

Or psychopaths.  One of my favorite characters, Sherlock Holmes in the updated BBC series that places him in contemporary times, describes himself as a high functioning psychopath, a very good explanation for his cold laser focus on the puzzle and inability to take the effect of his behavior on the feelings of the people in his life into consideration. Fans still love him. though. So does his buddy Watson and his brother Mycroft in his own cold, brilliant but short of psychopathic way.

  7. Study: Repealing Missouri’s background check law associated with a murder spike

     

    The 2007 repeal of a Missouri law that required background checks and licenses for all handgun owners  appears to be associated with a significant increase in murders there, a new study finds.
    What the study found

    The law’s repeal was correlated with a 23 percent spike in firearm homicide rates, or an additional 55 to 63 murders annually from 2008 to 2012, according to the study conducted by researchers with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research and to be published in the Journal of Urban Health.

    “This study provides compelling confirmation that weaknesses in firearm laws lead to deaths from gun violence,” Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research and the study’s lead author, said in a news release. “There is strong evidence to support the idea that the repeal of Missouri’s handgun purchaser licensing law contributed to dozens of additional murders in Missouri each year since the law was changed.”

     

        2. The spike in murders only held for those committed with a gun and was consistent throughout the state. Neither Missouri’s border states nor the nation as a whole saw similar increases.

          Police in border states that kept such laws reported a big spike in guns bought in Missouri that had been diverted to criminals. In 2009, Missouri exported 136 guns to neighboring Illinois and 78 to neighboring Kansas, according to data collected by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

  8. Owen Hill to turn Arts Center ugly.

    Not sure why the Tri Lakes Center for the Arts is going political, or so ugly, for that matter, but it's probably a mistake. Check out the title of Owen's speech.

    Obviously, the "ugly" will be blamed on those damned lliberals, Barry Obama, et. al, but everyone, even those in the Tri Lakes area, should know it's the liberals and creative types who support the arts and want to fund them and expand their reach to all our citizens. It's not those who see ugly everywhere they go..like Owen Hill.

  12. I'm looking into it more.  I saw the Democracy Now piece too, which is more in keeping with the Guardian take, an outlet I genrally like.  The initial blog was sent o me from a pretty tursted source that is no right-winger and knows people in country.

Passers-by on Georgetown’s 30th Street on a freezing Saturday were perplexed at the standoff between two groups assuming opposite sides of the street. One ethnically mixed group of mostly Latino, Black, and White had taken the side of the street in front of the Venezuelan Embassy to show solidarity with Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution. The group on the other side was the all white, privileged youth of the Venezuelan elite residing in the U.S. who want to see their country’s return to the days when they dominated the economic and political process.

        The anti-government opposition in the streets is the Venezuelan version of our own Tea Party – funded by the CIA and the indigenous oligarchs. 

        1. I think there is more going on and its not so clean cut.  Certainly skeptism is warrented, and the CIA has a long history of interfering in the region.

          This is a good read, that raises interesting points.  I am not trying to spread disinformation, and if I have I am reemiss.  But I also don't just accept at face value any critique from the left thatthe left is government is justified or dissatisfaction is solely a product of CIA creation.  As CSNY sang a long time ago: "nobodies right if everybody's wrong."  I will keep followign this and try to reserve my judgment.
