Everyone's a media critic, including Archbishop Sam Aquila who told KNUS radio host Dan Caplis last week the media is distorting Pope Fancis, in part by failing to report that Satan is real.
Aquila on Pope Francis press coverage: [Pope Francis] has a deep love for those that are in need, for those who are poor, and reaches out to them, and so, the media never reports on his very real support for Catholic teaching and the understanding of Catholic teaching. They never report on – he’s one of the few popes that, at least in my lifetime, who has referred to the devil in his homilies and his catechesis. And rarely do you hear the secular media reporting on that – that there is evil in the world, that there is – that Satan is real, the devil is real and he can really draw you away from the gospel message. And, of course, in a secular world that denies God, they’re going to deny the evil one, too. And so it gives free rein to the evil one and that is really problematic because it is not good for humanity. Also, he is really one who embraces those who are sick or suffering. And I watched a video yesterday on Blessed John Paul II[…]. And so Francis, too, has that goodness about him, and people really do see that he loves them and cares for them. But he’s also very challenging. When he – you know, the fact that he warned members of the mafia in Italy that they could go to hell if they continue to pursue their abuse of power and their murdering of people, and all of that.
I understand Archbishop Aquila is an Archbishop. And I understand Dan Caplis is a social conservative, and I understand I'm a biased atheist.
And we're all entitled to our beliefs, truly. But the media should report that Satan is real?

Satan is as real as the "psychotic mass murder" that most people (idiots) believe in.
I love the mostly unsolicited armchair interpretations that are coming from the archbishops and other high ranking catholics now that we are in the era of Pope Francis. Oh no, of course the pope didn't mean that ! What he REALLY meant was…
Satan IS real. His name is Paul Ryan.
But he looks like such a nice honest young man !
You must have missed the big crazy eyes. So many of the far rightie pols have them.
lol
Umm. Ronald Wilson Reagan… six letters in every name!
Ronald Wilson Reagan anagrams to: Insane Anglo Warlord. Things that make you go …hmmm.
Can't believe Nancy missed that.
This is a very misguided clergy member. It isn't the media's role to report his religious beliefs as established fact. If he meant to say the media should report that popular Pope Francis believes that Satan is real and if that can be verified, fine. That's a reasonable request though the media may or may not consider that newsworthy. But to expect the media to treat aspects of religious doctrine as fact is clearly inappropriate. What's next? Demanding that the media report that the trinity is real?
I find myself in agreement with BC
What I find sad, as a fomer practicing Catholic who left over the horror of the sexual abuse and coverup, is that these statements of Aquila are just one step away from "the devil made me do it," as an elaborate rationalization for the sexual abuse horror.
Caplis is not just a social conservative, he is a Catholic. I don't know if he has ever done legal work for the Archdioscese.
Ten years ago Dick Cheney's assertions were reported in the news media without "allegedly", so I think the Archbishop has much less to complain about than he lets on.
Sounds like a Country Song…
At least it's real country music.
SATan looks to be about as real as you and I, and he's not hard to locate.
He's got his own facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/stephena.tan.3) . . .
. . . I think his friends probably call him steve . . .
An anagram for Satan is Santa. His minions include egg laying bunnies.
Woah.
I tutor adults in English, among other gigs. One of my students, a lady from Peru, asked me why we do the Easter egg thing here, with chocolate, candy, baskets, etc. In Peru, holy week, "Semana Santa" is a huge holiday, with no work, much drinking, and family gatherings.
I tried, but I couldn't really explain the easter egg thing other than it's really about making money. I do have a lovely (NSFW) visual about how the easter eggs get made:
The whole bunny and egg thing comes from ancient pagan spring fertility celebrations. Google it and you get everything from Sumerian through Roman and up to pre-Christian Germanic. Like so many Christmas symbols these pre-existing traditions were incorporated into Christian celebrations. The egg plays a role in Passover, too, no doubt for similar reasons, just as Chanukah, like Christmas in December instead of when Jesus would have been born if it was tax time, has roots in ancient midwinter celebrations of the return of a strengthening sun.
Sometimes hard boiled, sometimes runny, it comes from a chicken not a bunny, dummy.
