Dr. Chaps' alleged friendship with Rand Paul raises questions

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), state Rep.-elect Gordon Klingenschmitt (R).

Maybe you think Gordon "Dr. Chaps" Klingenschmitt, who will be joining the Colorado General Assembly in January, is easy to ignore because he's so far out there, given his comments about performing lesbian exorcismsObama is a demon, etc.

But if you believe Klingenschmitt, he's got at least one friend in a high place. That would be GOP presidential hopeful Rand Paul.

In an April broadcast of his regular "Pray In Jesus' Name News," Klingenschmitt tells us (9 min 25 seconds into it) that he's friendly with the Kentucky Senator.

"Help pass Senate Bill 583, The Life Begins at Conception Act," Klingenschmitt urges his three listeners, not counting me. "This personhood bill, introduced by my friend, Senator Rand Paul, can actually defend life and overturn Roe versus Wade."

Nothing wrong with Dr. Chaps and Rand Paul being friendly. But you wonder, has Paul objected to Klingenschmitt's craziness?

And it raises the question of whether Klingenschmitt's soon-to-be legislative colleagues will speak up during the legislative session when, inevitably, Klingenschmitt grabs the media spotlight by opening his mouth.

  1. In fairness to (Ayn) Rand Paul, it's entirely possible that Chaps friended him on Facebook and has deluded himself into believing that signifies an actual relationship.

        1. Fair to ask but not, I think, to assume.

If (Ayn) Rand Paul were on TV talking about what an important job Chaps is doing by exorcising the demons of agita from the annual GOP sausage and peppers fest, that's one thing.  If I say Bill Clinton is my BFF and go mow down a bunch of folks, it's not Bill's job to disown me.

  2. If you can stomach it, check out Klingon's youtube channel, "Chaplaingate".Posted there are video interviews with Ted Cruz, Randy Baumgardner, Allen West, and several other people at the conservative get together last summer.

Rand Paul was quoted extensively on the abortion issue and his personhood bill, but never interviewed, never took a selfie or a photo op with the Chapster.  Pure name-dropping by Klingenschmitt, as far as I can tell. And sensible caution by Rand Paul.

By the way, tell me if you agree that his extensive interviews and advocacy for politicians running for election on his video "church" channel violates IRS rules on separation of religious and political speech.

    1. Paul has always struck me as 2% smarter than the average Teabagger. It's not much, but if it kept him arm's length from Chaps it's good for something.

  3. I don't understand why Chaps would gravitate to Rand Paul when there are plenty of loony loons in the GOP who are more in ideological and theological synch with Chaps (i.e., Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum (whose name ought never to be Googled), Piyush Jindal (who has actually attended an exorcism), and Rick Perry.  Isn't Rand Paul a little too libertarian for a Bible-Thumper like Chaps?

    1. Chaps isn't gravitating anywhere — he's saying the Senate personhood bill (. . . yes, Virginia Gardner, there is a bill . . . ) was introduced by "his friend."  If any of those other knuckleheads had introduced the bill, they'd be " his good friend," "his very good friend," or "fantastic BFF good friend" . . .

. . . we're parsing too much here, without parsing the only thing really important here . . . the GD bill !
