East High Students Walk Out In Ferguson Protest

UPDATE #2: Four Denver Police officers were injured by a motorist suffering "medical issues" while they were escorting students from downtown Denver back to East High School—Denver Post:

The officers and the driver were transported to Denver Health. One officer in critical condition was taken into surgery, Police Chief Robert White said. Another officer had serious injuries. The two other officers were treated for "minor injuries," White said.

White added it is "not our best day."

Four mangled bicycles were seen on the north side of Colfax Avenue between High Street and Williams Street. A nurse on the scene was covered in blood, and a wide area was cordoned off by police.

UPDATE: FOX 31:

The Denver Post reported about 1,000 students took part in the march.

As they marched, students chanted “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Justice for Michael,” according to several accounts on Twitter.

After reaching Civic Center Park, the crowd moved toward downtown along the 16th Street Mall.  They mostly spread out and dispersed after that.

Around 11:30 a.m., the students regathered at Colfax and Broadway, where they held a 4 1/2-minute moment of silence, marking every hour Brown was in the street. The group then began a march back to the high school.

Just getting word of this, apparently a huge crowd of students from Denver's East High School have walked out of class this morning, shutting down Colfax Avenue near the Colorado state capitol in protest over the shooting of African-American teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri:

We'll update with coverage once available–looks like a pretty big event.

    1. Impressive. News just came down that the white NYC cop won't be indicted in that city's choke hold case, despite the coroner ruling the death a homicide and the cause of death choke hold. And it's all on video, including the African American man saying over and over that he couldn't breath. Nothing ambiguous at all.  A clear cut case of gross injustice. There are numerous other current examples, all involving white cops and young men of color. 

      Demonstrations over this NYC case are sure to commence while Fergusen related demonstrations continue. And neither of these incidents is as purely egregious as the case of a self styled vigilante leaving the safety of his vehicle, stalking an unarmed teen who was doing nothing but walking by, killing him when the teen decided he'd better defend himself against this threatening stalker, then having the nerve to claim that he, the armed stalker who only had to stay in his vehicle to be perfectly safe, was standing his ground and getting away with it. It was only because of the fuss kicked up that the police investigated at all. Same goes for the other cases. The only difference is there won't even be any trials where cops are involved.

      Regardless of the particulars of the Fergusen case, anyone who doesn't believe that it's far too easy for white cops and whites in general (and yes, I know Zimmer in particular is half Hispanic) to get away with killing unarmed young African Americans is an idiot.

      1. Yeah – I'm guessing we can now add #ICantBreathe to the list of hashtags associated with ongoing protests.

        The Eric Garner case is, to me, more shocking than the Ferguson case. How are cop-worn body cams going to help if direct video evidence of the choking of Garner doesn't result in an indictment?

      It doesn't look as though the motorist who injured the police officers had anything to do with the protests.From the 9 news report:

      The person driving the car was transported to the hospital and was believed to be experiencing a medical issue. He is in stable condition. Sources tell 9NEWS that witnesses told detectives the driver had a seizure.

      Police say there is no indication right now that this was an intentional act or was related to the protest. It will be the DA's decision to decide whether to charge the driver.

      You can argue that the officers would not have been in that location had they not been "crowd controlling" the protesters,, but the motorist would have had his/her seizure anyway, and other bystanders would probably have been injured.

  7. I'm very proud of the way Denver Police have handled themselves. Their officers were injured while protecting students who were protesting against a perceived wrong by police. Did they blame students? No. They did exactly what Darren Wilson would have done. They did their job.

    1. Me too. They were not involved in any violence. The single and terribly tragic incident seems to have been due to a medical issue. I'd also like to say that, while we have had more than our fair share of excessive force issues, including more than our fair share of needless deaths, here in Denver, I've been at many rallies, marches and events that have been patrolled by our Denver bicycle cops and they are most definitely not part of the problem. They're the best. Thoughts and prayers with officer John Adsit. 

      1. As opposed to those police patrolling in full body armor and assault rifles on MRAPs during almost every march I've participated in in Denver.

        I wish the injured officers the speediest recovery, and thank them for their service; certainly bike patrol isn't the same as my unfortunate experience with the Denver PD.
