And that great free market alternative is what? Repubs are great for pushing their desired outcomes without describing how they get their or what their desired outcome really is. The devil is in the details, and in this case, my guess he is a really ugly devil.
ummmm…. how is the free market going to feed poor people? Doesn't sound like there's any profit in it.

. . . things are looking pretty bright for the manufacturers of heavy duty street sweepers, I suppose.
One free market solution would be for some enterprising megacorporation to build apartments and food processing plants to house and feed and employ the poor. They could pay the employees with scrip for producing and delivering food. Their pay in scrip which naturally could be spent only at any megacorp store, provides for their basic needs. Since the megacorp would be the sole provider for the poor, they would be justified in charging a small "premium" for their products and services to their employee/clients. If the pay didn't quite cover the full costs of living in the generously provided housing and retail shopping outlets, the megacorp would provide further support in the way of scrip loans, at a nominal interest rate of say, 20%, automatically deducted from their wages.
Of course if the notoriously bad money managers wind up spending all their funds and wind up having their full paychecks withheld to pay back the generous loans the megacorp offered them, then they would be required to check themselves into the intake side of the food processing plant where they could then donate themselves to the latest innovative product from the megacorp — Soylent Green, thus reducing the problem of poverty.
So tending to the poor can be profitable and beneficial to society as well.
Now I know why Walmart got into the grocery business — They are visionaries positioning themselves for the future!

Anyone who grew up in "coal country" knows of the insidious imprisonment of humans who were employed by the mines and mills of old. The company store was the quintessential method of imposing economic slavery upon hundreds of thousands of workers. It just seemed like the pay never quite equaled the debt…
I fervently recommend to all a reading or re-reading of "the Apostate" by Jack London. A short story that will change your point of view about this subject.
Conservatives, both Republican and Democrat, probably see the opportunity to move our economy closer to the Indian ideal. The advent of trickle down economics, along with the demonization of unions has, after 30 years, sufficiently weakened the middle class. Now is the time for some really visible results. Eliminate SNAP, have the banks steal housing and savings, and get people out of their homes and starving on the street. Thus we are that much closer to the conservative archetype.
