Watch Out Cory Gardner, The 'Baggers Are Restless

See ya!
See ya!

A conservative blogger at Politichicks.com describes a Republican Party public event with Sen.-elect Cory Gardner sometime last month in Highlands Ranch that apparently didn't go so well:

With about 100 people at the meet and greet, it was a standing room only event where Gardener spoke for about two minutes and then went to mingle with the crowd. [Homeschool mom Florence] Sebern stated that she and her son stood back so that senior citizens in attendance could meet the senator-elect first.

Sebern described Gardner’s departure as abrupt, leaving the impression that he felt uncomfortable surrounded by people familiar to the campaign who might have had questions on his support for the spending bill which funded President Obama’s mandate for amnesty. Sebern reported that there was no announcement for last minutes pictures or autographs, though there were several people waiting in line to see him.

“Gardner is informing a whole new set of voters,” Sebern said, emphasizing that he sent a message to young people that they are not important enough for him to stay and shake their hands. She described him as being bumrushed out of the room with 10 to 15 constituents in line still waiting to talk to him. She noted that he abandoned two young constituents. One young man appeared to have been hoping for an autograph of a book or magazine. The other one was Sebern’s son—who will be eligible to vote when Senator Gardner is up for re-election.

Activists such as KLZ radio host Ken Clark were stunned that Gardner would leave so quickly without a word to his constituents. On his December 18th radio show covering the Gardener event, Clark said, “I never seen a politician run so fast to get out of the room in my entire life.” Clark also was blocked from access, flanked by Gardner’s aides. He described aides forming a circle around Gardener before he was whisked away in “a very spirited walk.”

Yikes! You hope these party faithful don't find out Gardner used to be a Democrat, right? On the other hand, Gardner ran to the left–or at least pretended to–so many times last year he could have been mistaken for one. And who knows what the next six wild years in Washington may bring? Cory "Nighthorse" Gardner, anyone?

Laugh all you want, stranger things have happened.

  1. Not just a Cory stunt.  Several Dems, including one who was ousted last election, have the same issue with meeting people at events.  Being one of the 100 most powerful people on earth does not give a god like status to them.  Udall lost a lot of respect from me many years ago when he did less.  He showed up late, met a couple money people and disappeared within a few minutes without speaking to the crowd. We were his volunteers at an event for us to meet and mingle with him.

    1. It may be nothing more sinister than over-scheduling to meet money people at too many events in one day. Not that that excuses treating volunteers and constituents in such a cavalier way. And the other details of the Gardner departure do point to a candidate who doesn't want to answer any tough questions.

In any case, it's too bad our present system is one in which only a tiny percentage of their time is free for anything other than raising money. I was at a Udall/Romanoff appearance for volunteers about to go out during the last days of the election and Udall spoke and made himself available for quite some time but that was at a point when things were pretty desperate and he really needed the troops to keep pushing.  Andrew has been generous to the people who come to his events every time I've attended one. For all the good that's done him. But they're pretty much always late arriving because they're over scheduled to raise funds at multiple events.

      1. This, with his own friendly crowd?  I don't think his 2014 Front Range town halls will look much like his Congressional meetings did in Limon or Crook: a couple of winks, summarily dismiss the tow-three Democrats in the room, a litany of useless talking points – and then you're off.

Our neighboring US Senator to the east, Kansas Republican Jerry Moran, logged his 1,000th Town Hall meeting over a year ago (he was elected to the House in 1996; took his Senate seat in 2010).  In 2014, Senator Moran led the entire Senate, hosting 80 Town Hall forums.  I hope I'm wrong, but I expect a year from now we'll be lamenting the Senator's Town Hall forums count that looks more ala Coffman and Lamborn: few, invitation-only and tightly scripted.

  2. A year ago last spring one of the Hill papers coined Cory a Dem in a picture caption…foretelling?  BTW Senator, how'd we do in the House on the Energy Efficiency bill?

  3. That Teabag fever has yet to "break" as Obama had hoped in 2012. They are going to keep pushing further to the right and keep up their dysfunctional, near sociopathic ways

    Gohmert announces challenge to Boehner:

Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) said Sunday that he will challenge John Boehner (R-Ohio) as Speaker in the new Congress.

“I’m putting my name out there today to be another candidate for Speaker,” Gohmert said on "Fox and Friends."

Gohmert said that after “years of broken promises, it’s time for a change.”

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) on Saturday announced that he would not support Boehner for Speaker.

"This is not a personal attack against Mr. Boehner, however, the people desire and deserve a choice," Yoho said in a Facebook post. "In November, they resoundingly rejected the status quo."

“Eventually, the goal is second, third, fourth round, we have enough people that say ‘you know what, it really is time for a change,' ” Gohmert said Sunday. “'You deceived us when you went to Obama and Pelosi to get your votes for the cromnibus. You said you’d fight amnesty tooth an nail. You didn’t, you funded it.' ”

Gohmert said, if elected, he would ”fight amnesty tooth and nail. We’ll use the powers of the purse. We’ll have better oversight. We’ll fight to defund ObamaCare.”

    Please proceed, Goober, please proceed.

    1. As much as I love watching the sideshow overtake the circus, Goober isn't a serious challenger this time around.  Boner's closest call came two years ago when the speaker's race almost went to a second ballot.  Many of those dozen new Republican House members come from blue districts in the northeast and midwest.  The new Reps from ME, NH, and NY will not see Goober as the type of speaker who will get them re-elected in '16.

    2. A Menage a Trois of Baggers?

Apparently, Louie Gohmert is not a sufficient right wing challenger to Boner.  Ted Yoohoo of Florida has thrown his hat into the ring for speaker as well.

While traditionally the speaker has been a member of the House, the rules allow the House to elect a non-member to serve as speaker.  Anyone for Michelle Bachman who will be looking for work beginning next week?

  4. I predict one thing you'll never hear said about Cory Gardner — "Regardless of the consequences, he voted based on his core beliefs".

He'd have to get some first…

As long as the Koch Brothers continue to hold the high bid, we can predict with certainty how Mr. Gardner's votes will go.

  5. I popped over here to see if the Gomer (sic) story had been posted yet. Yep, you folks are on the ball. This ought to be entertaining. A genuine teabagger know-nothing vs, the current Speaker who has had quite enough of that lot. I think Blue Cat had the popcorn last. Pass it down please.
