Justin Everett is Mad as Heck About Dr. Chaps -- But Not Like You'd Guess

  • by: Colorado Pols

Republican Rep. Justin Everett got out of bed early enough this morning to make it to the House floor, where he used a motion of personal privilege to chastise Republican House leaders for removing Rep. Gordon “Dr. Chaps” Klingenschmitt from a House committee yesterday.

You may recall that Everett was removed by Republicans from two committee assignments last March, when Everett was having trouble making it to the State Capitol on time and staying awake when he did arrive. With that background in mind, it is interesting to listen to Everett complaining about a House decision to punish Dr. Chaps over something he said while away from the Capitol.

Here’s Everett’s speech from the floor in its entirety. Whether he’s right or wrong, Everett does succeed in proving that there is still a very large rift in the Republican Party:

  1. You know, I have a bit of a problem with leadership removing any elected legislator from an assignment over a free speech issue, particularly speech away from the Capitol.

Let the asshat speak — what are you Teapublicans afraid of anyway?  That the electorate will actually get to hear your odious thoughts and guiding (lack of) principles???  That the semi-sane among you might take a long hard look in the mirror and see what the insane dreck has driven you to become???

The crazies want a crazy voice representing them in the crazy caucus — shame on Delgrosso for trying to hide their light!

    1. Removing from a legislative assignment? Well, there is a limited toolbox for dealing with situations of this kind. I am sure the Republican leadership has been pushing Dr. Chaps hard to tone down his rhetoric. Surely they anticipated the problems. Predictably, they have been unsuccessful. They had to do something, they have limited tools, so they used this one. Will this be enough to control him? Stay tuned.

      1. I suspect that for the Republican leadership, talking to Chaps and asking him to tone it down is comparable to having a conversation with a piece of furniture. It aint gonna get very far.

The difference between Brian delGrosso and Mike May is interesting to note. May was as conservative as they come, what with representing Douglas County and all. But he did not tolerate Doug “the Kicker” Bruce and the crap emanating from Doug’s pie hole. May joined with Andrew Romanoff and Alice Madden in doing the censure thing. And that opened the door to Waller’s primary challenge to the Kicker and the rest is history………

DelGrosso simply says that Chaps doesn’t speak for all of them and removes him from one committee through the end of this session. No word on whether he gets reinstated in January.

        1. You’re right that Chaps is unlikely to change. He’s a true believer, unlike most of the opportunistic politicos out there. And he’s a Christian “Dominionist”, which means someone who wants to institute theocracy. He truly does not buy into the principle of separation of church and state.

I predict that he will choose to go back to his ministry full-time….it’s his biggest money-maker, and probably will give him more satisfaction than legislating. Then the Republican leadership will appoint some tea party guy or gal to keep the base happy, and life goes on.

On Chaps’ Facebook page, he’s already rethinking the whole apology thing…asking his followers if he should have apologized at all. So you can see how sincere and heartfelt that apology was.

          1. Guess he thought a token apology would be enough to avoid any more punishment. Then he got booted from a committee anyway. Naturally it doesn’t seem worthwhile anymore.

I think you’re right. His ministry is worth more to him than his salary as a state legislator. It has raised his profile and probably won him lots more nutcase fans who hadn’t heard of him before so it’s served its purpose already. If it’s not going to be any fun, he may not be all that interested in doing it again in 2016. Two years of raising his profile beyond Colorado Springs should be quite enough to keep him going on the wing nut circuit for a long time. Heck. He might not even last the two years. Might decide God told him that his place is with his ministry, not in the Godless state legislature. R legislative and party leaders will be happy to see him go. It’s not like they have to worry about keeping that seat.

I guess I should no longer be surprised that there are people out there who buy what this snake oil pusher is selling but I can’t help it. I do find it mind boggling that there are grown ups who take this clown seriously.
