Get More Smarter on Monday (June 8)

Get More SmarterThis doesn’t seem very fast to us. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example).

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► Senator Michael Bennet (D-Denver) is pushing for a major overhaul of campaign finance reform. We all know that campaign finance laws are pretty useless at the moment — hell, GOP Presidential contender Jeb Bush has been openly breaking the law for months.

► The Veterans Administration is promoting a new plan to help pay for completion of the Aurora VA Hospital. A three-week extension on funding construction is set to expire this week.

► The deadline for Gov. John Hickenlooper to veto legislation from the 2015 Colorado Assembly came and went on Friday with no new vetoes. Hickenlooper vetoed three bills from the prior session: two red-light camera restriction bills, and nonsense legislation that would have allowed predatory lenders to drastically increase interest rates. Good on ya, Gov.

Get even more smarter after the jump…

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► Congressman Mike Coffman (R-Aurora) paid $15,000 for retired surgeon and GOP Presidential candidate Ben Carson to speak at a fundraiser. Yes, this is the same Ben Carson who recently said “prison makes you gay.

► State Treasurer Walker Stapleton is a political hoarder — he can’t let anything drop. Stapleton is now blaming the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity for making him look stupid on PERA legislation discussed a few months ago…even though it was Stapleton doing all the stupid. From the Colorado Springs Gazette:

Dustin Zvonek, a close ally and political adviser to Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler, heads AFP Colorado. Brauchler is widely considered a candidate for governor in 2018. So is Stapleton.

“It is not a stretch to conclude that the factually flawed email, Facebook ads, using AFP funds and resources, was an obvious attempt not to further AFP policy causes but to prop up a political consultant’s client,” Stapleton argues.

We can’t judge Zvonek’s motives, but AFP’s zealous and immediate anti- Stapleton crusade seems uncharacteristic and suspect. If Zvonek plans to work with Brauchler, he should avoid targeting other conservatives with AFP’s resources and clout.

Sure, Walker. It’s not your fault that you supported a bill that you later claimed to have opposed.

► The DC-based publication The Hill takes a look at Mike Coffman’s refusal to run for U.S. Senate and what that means for Republicans. The newspaper goes on to list just about every living Republican as a potential Senate candidate in 2016.

The Denver Post is looking to cut 20 positions from its newsroom staff, which should concern everybody in Colorado. Aurora Sentinel editor Dave Perry has a great breakdown of the newspaper industry in his latest editorial:

So sneer all you want about the misfortunes of the Post and our industry. But I promise you that without it, Denver, and Aurora, and all of Colorado, will be a far lesser place than it is. I very often don’t agree with many news and non-news decisions the Post makes, but I have no hesitation in insisting that the mission and product of the Denver Post —  and the Colorado Springs Gazette, and the Durango Herald and the Aurora Sentinel — is critical to the region’s well-being and success. In any way you can, you should support the Post and other media, and tell them what you like and hate. But if you dismiss them, and all of us, you dismiss the only real defense society has against everything you spend so much time complaining about — that matters.

► Colorado Progressive Coalition is trying to launch a recall campaign to remove Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey from office before he is term-limited out in 2016. This is stupid on a whole number of levels; they’d be much better off focusing on the candidates for District Attorney who are running to succeed Morrissey in 2016.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► At last! Coloradans can finally sell homemade pickles

► Former Sen. Mark Udall talks about his 2014 campaign and what he’s doing now that he’s not in the Senate.

►  The Jefferson County School District has been widely criticized for acting in the interest of conservative politics — and not those of students and teachers. This came up in the hiring of Communications Director Lisa Pinto, who has since resigned, and it looks as though Superintendent Dan McMinimee will replace her with…another political operative from the right wing.

President Obama wants to raise wages for millions of Americans.

  1. Colorado Progressive Coalition is trying to launch a recall campaign to remove Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey from office before he is term-limited out in 2016. This is stupid on a whole number of levels; they’d be much better off focusing on the candidates for District Attorney who are running to succeed Morrissey in 2016.

I may not agree with Morrissey's decision, but this is just clown shoes. The recall is meant to remove elected officials who have become corrupt, not remove them for doing something you don't agree with. The whole initiative/referendum/recall process has become so bastardized that it's high time to scrap them.

      1. It sounds EXTREMELY stupid to me. Nothing better to waste their $$$ on? If they were smart, they'd get ahead of the ball and vet Michael Carrigan, and if he comes up wanting, then get behind a credible opponent.

But why do that when they can try to recall Mitch Morrissey.

        1. Well…when you have so fucking much money….thanks, Citizens United….Thanks, SCOTUS….

          and, ummm….”If they were smart”….Frank…c,mon man….;)

    1. One could argue that a complete lack of prosecutions of officers in 11 years IS corruption.

But this is a stupid idea with Morrissey being term-limited out next year. If you want change at this late date, make a difference by promoting someone in the election. By forcing a recall election, the petitioners are just as likely to find themselves caught in a sudden election without time to get a good candidate before the voters.

  2. Just curious, Pols – why not mention the one candidate who has declared that he is running for Bennet's seat? Darryl Glenn has raised $26K, (as of April 2015), is campaigning seriously, and has actually declared for the office.

I mean, I agree with you that he is lightweight politically, super-conservative in the tea party vein, but he's going to get some military votes even if he has no military policy specifics. He's kind of a smooth talker, and has won his EPCO comissionerships handily.

You're probably right that "You’ll see Indiana Gov. Mike Pence in drag before you see Glenn in the Senate."

But I think that you should at least mention Glenn's candidacy.

    1. Well, the fact that he has raised only $26,000 (as a "serious" candidate) plays a role. Hell, we're surprised that he raised that much, and Bennet raised $2 million in the first quarter. $26k is peanuts in a U.S. Senate race — you could do that with 6-7 max donors.

We get a variation of this question all the time. Our basic rule of thumb is that it must be at least plausible for a candidate to win the election in order for us to pay much attention. Anybody can fill out paperwork and build a website. Put it this way: If the 2016 Senate election were held 100 times, do you honestly think Glenn could win even once?

      1. Probably not. But I will remind you that I raised the specter of Gordon Klingenschmitt running and winning HD15, way before he was on anyone's radar, including Pols, as a "serious candidate".

I could probably find the original comment or diary if I try.

To be clear: I don't want Glenn to win, or to get the nomination. It is much more likely that the state GOP will nominate some plain vanilla candidate who will offend the fewest people. But I have investigated Glenn  – he's personable, intelligent, military, sounds good, will allow the GOP to say that they're not racist by nominating him. They could do a lot worse. And probably will.

  3. Udall, once again downplaying is obnoxious, insulting, single-issue campaign.  What he should have learned was that the kind of campaign that he ran didn't match with Coloradoans who by-and-large aren't single issue voters.  He started too soon, he continued too long and he never stopped.  In addition to that, he did serious damage to the Democratic Party and its candidates for years to come, but simply taking the abortion issue out of their hands as a bat to beat Republicans over the head with.
