"Vote Vets" Ads Best in Colorado

  • by: Colorado Pols

Put aside, for a moment, whatever you think of the race in CD-4 between Rep. Marilyn Musgrave and Democratic challenger Betsy Markey. The ads being produced this year by the organization “Vote Vets” are some of the best political spots on television (which isn’t all that difficult considering the crap we’ve seen in Colorado from both sides, but nevertheless…)

Take a look at “Vote Vets” most recent ad in Colorado:

  1. Weak because when you watch it with the sound off (I mute EVERY commercial that appears on my TV) it has zero impact.

With the sound off, you have no idea what it is about.

I think the best ads work with and without sound.

  2. the substance of this ad. I have never understood why Republicans think that it’s OK to send our armed forces into battle, but not reward them upon their return. MM of all people should be voting to increase veterans benefits.

But that’s the price that you pay when you see all government spending as evil, even when it’s helping the people who deserve the most we can give them.

Congress gets a pay raise, and vets get the shaft? What a country.

  3. I am not familiar with representative Musgrave’s overall voting record on veterans, but it seems like there could be many reasons for the vote described that aren’t anti-veteran. Odds are it came as part of a larger Democratic bill with other provisions, but I’d be happy to be corrected on that.  Plus the famous “she took a pay raise” line applies to everyone in congress, and in that respect doesn’t show as much. The ad to me seems mostly about having veterans say something bad about representative Musgrave (or Mr. Schaffer). Even if the group is nominally non-partisan, they look awfully partisan, and neither party should simply use the image of troops or veterans for partisan gain.

    1. But most of the votes they point out were as simple as they are painted.  The Dems haven’t been out to bundle veterans’ benefits with unpopular (to Republicans) social benefits bills.  In fact, most of them if they were attached to anything were attached to war funding bills.
