Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt has got to go

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Colorado’s most infamous far-right Republican legislator, Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt, is at it again.

In a new video posted by Rep. Klingenschmitt this past week, Klingenschmitt claims that allowing gay scoutmasters to serve in the Boy Scouts of America “will lead to sexual abuse” and goes on to quote a Bible verse that says for those who cause “little ones to sin,” “it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Klingenschmitt then says it would be “better” for “child molesters” like the scoutmasters he previously described to be drowned.

Understand this: a sitting member of the Colorado legislature has called for gay scoutmasters to be killed. Sign our petition demanding that Rep. Klingenschmitt resign from the Colorado legislature immediately.

After Rep. Klingenschmitt claimed that a member of Congress from our state wants to “behead Christians,” and that the tragic attack on a pregnant woman in Longmont last March was “the curse of God,” we called for him to resign. Instead, House Minority Leader Brian DelGrosso restored Klingenschmitt to his committee assignments as soon as the media stopped paying attention, and swept the matter under the rug. That was a huge mistake, and today Republicans are paying the price as Klingenschmitt once again brings shame upon the entire state of Colorado.

This is just not acceptable. By not asking for his immediate resignation, Colorado Republicans are validating what he says. Every day that goes by with Klingenschmitt continuing to serve as a Republican legislator, his hatred speaks for them whether they like it or not.

Sign our petition now–demand Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt’s immediate resignation. We’ll deliver your names and comments to House Republican leaders and the press.

Thanks for helping us say no to hate in Colorado.

  1. I take the opposite approach, same with Donald Trump: let them stay, let them be loud, let them be an embarrassment. If their supporters and constituents don't learn, then its just their burden to bear.

    1. As Motoranus likes to say, "They have a First Amendment right." To which I say, Amen!

Better for folks to know what is going on inside their heads than for they operate under the radar.

  2. Why bother asking him to resign from his House seat? He's not running for re-election – remember, God told him to run for Senate District 12 instead?

The Legislature is out of session until January 2016. Klingenschmitt will run against reasonable Republican Bob Gardner for SD12 in 2016. So we would have at most 5 months more of his nonsense in 2016. I can't beleive that voters in SD12, given a  choice of a sane person with the requisite R" after the name would not elect Gardner, rather than Dr. Chaps.

Would Hullinghorst get to pick someone to replace him for the 2nd session of the Legislature if he did resign? That would be a plus, if so.

What could we expect from Klingenschmitt for five months? More twitter wars with Senator Gardner? More "Oh no he didn't say that?!!" More preachin' from the Capitol? More horrible embarrassment for the Republican Party? More "The face of your party is a bigoted religious fanatic?" Oh, say it ain't so.

I'm not against pressuring him to resign – but I'd like to know what voters get out of it.

    1. Mama, you may have just cursed Bob Gardner by referring to him as the reasonable Republican. That label does not play well in that district.

      1. So El Paso Tea Party voters care what an anonymous blogger on the liberal site-that-must-not-be-named says? It would be nice if I had that kind of influence, but I doubt it…

        1. You'd be surprised. IIRC, one of the Hotling brothers bashed Jeff Crack in the 2006 GOP primary in CD 5 because some gay rights activist in Colorado Springs once said something favorable Jeff Crank. Lamborn won.

    2. I can't believe we are calling Gardner "sane." Sane in regards to who is all in the crazy ass Republican Party? Yes.

Sane as in anyway moderate or even a touch right of center? Hell no. Lets not lower the bar here.

      1. Bob Gardner did sign off on allowing the state health exchange to get funded, thus earning himself Amy Stephens-like anathema from his GOP colleagues. He's also proposed some decent funding proposals for developmentally disabled folks, earning an endorsement from Alliance.

But on everything else, he's a blood-red conservative, anti-union as they come, anti-civil-unions. Really, truly, any Republicans or Tea Party folks reading this. Bob Gardner is your soul mate. He's just slightly less crazy than Klingenschmitt, believing in governance, because that is his background.

I hereby cast off the curse of the mamajama endorsement of doom.

      2. That's why it's so pointless to make a big deal out of getting rid of Klingenschmitt. The best replacement you'll get in C Springs is somebody who'll vote the same way 99.9% of the time while not saying so many crazy things right out loud. Big deal. I'd rather have the overt loon making the the party look like exactly what it is than a guy who votes the same way while masquerading as "reasonable".  No amount of GOP lunacy will get a Dem elected in C Springs but the more people who perceive the Colorado GOP in general as extreme, the better it is for Dem candidates in other, more competitive races.

  3. So after seeing so many pictures of Cynthia Coffman in prison garb on this site, I broke down and started watching Orange Is the New Black. Only halfway through Season One but I love it!

They have this homophobic meth head called Pennsatucky who has taken up faith healing and claims to be channeling the voice of Jesus. I guess that's what you would get if you crossed Dr. Chaps with Reverend Ted Haggard and gave them a vagina.

  4. Klingenschmitt is a Democrats best friend. I agree he should resign, but he won't now that liberal Democrats are leading the charge for his head. Nice work Progress Now!

      1. In 1980, I thought Reagan was a right wing moron and extremist. Who would have thought that 35 years later, Reagan would represent common sense and moderation in his party?

    1. Unusually incoherent even for you, Modster. So if mean libs, who are his best friends, weren't attacking him he'd be resigning on his own? How do you fit so many nonsensical contradictions into a single sentence?

  5. The best way to deal with this guy is to have some outstanding gay Scout Leaders.  He is trolling for headlines and you take the bait way too often.  Trying to silence him is a futile effort.  Prove him wrong the right way.

    1. Your comment is similar to what I said on the other thread about Gordon. Don't get upset with what he says; laugh at him. Make fun of him. Discredit him. Look at his nothing record as a legislator. Whatever works, do it. Listen to mamajama (her comments on the other thread). Of course, it doesn't seem like Progress Now is smart enough to figure this stuff out.    C.H.B.

      1. Spot on C.B.  We can't seem to break out of this pattern of always having to have a bad guy that we need to get all hysterical about.

This guy is a media seeking clown and wants progressives to make him their bad guy.  He revels in the attention and like Donald Trump it spurs him on to be even more outrageous because he knows it drives his enemies nuts.

It's time to get off the bandwagon of over reaction and stroking his little ego.  Find some really good people (gay or liberal straight) who know how to tie knots and let them do some good in this world helping young people see that we're all the same and we all have the capacity to contribute to our communities.  Let him stew in his idiocy and starve him of any legitimacy that he is a real threat to liberals.  The guy is a dolt who isn't worth the bother of being annoyed by him.

        1. And a lot of good the hysteria does. We tend to forget that most people never hear about any of this and also couldn't care less about the inside baseball plots, financial shenanigans, who is flip flopping, etc. that so many here pin high hopes on. It's fine to enjoy discussing this stuff among ourselves but let' s not delude ourselves that it effects how most voters will vote. As an experiment, try knocking on doors, asking people what they think of Rep. Klingenschmitt. See how long it takes you to find the first person who has any idea who this guy is.

Completely agree with CHB  about the Progress Now petition. Just an exercise in Dems speechifying to each other. Nobody but Dems, least of all the GOP party leaders who are the only ones who could pressure the guy to resign, cares about progressives petitioning against Rs. In fact, it's an honor for them like being the subject of a scathing op-ed in the NYT.

And if he resigned he'd only be replaced by someone who would vote exactly the same way he does, just without sounding quite so crazy right out loud. This is Colorado Springs we're talking about.  Self righteous posturing isn't going to win us any elections. See the Udall campaign.
