Obama Leads McCain 52-45 In Colorado

From Rasmussen Reports:

Barack Obama has inched further ahead of John McCain in the battleground state of Colorado where he now leads 52% to 45%, according to a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey.

Last week Obama led McCain by six points, 51% to 45%. One month earlier, McCain was ahead by two. [rsb emphasis]

If that wasn’t bad enough, McCain is getting killed in the two demographic groups that helped George W. Bush carry Colorado in 2004–women and independents. He’s even losing among men, although he is within the poll’s margin of error of +/- four points.

Obama is supported by 93% of the state’s Democrats and 10% of Republicans. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of GOP voters and six percent (6%) of Democrats support McCain. Obama leads among unaffiliated voters by 17 points.

McCain has lost ground among men voters, who now support Obama 49% to 47%. The Democrat leads among women by 11 points. [rsb emphasis]

Even if McCain wins all of the other red states where he is currently trailing, tied, or slightly ahead in the polls (VA, NC, FL, MO, OH, and NV) he absolutely must win Colorado to get to 270 electoral votes. To use a phrase that has been exceedingly popular this election cycle: Colorado is a game-changer.

Another poll (conducted simultaneously) also gives some insight into the US Senate race between Mark Udall and Bob Schaffer.

Democrat Mark Udall has opened a seven-point lead over Republican Bob Schaffer in Colorado’s race for the U.S. Senate. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Udall ahead 51% to 44%. [rsb emphasis]

This is pretty much the same smaller-than-it-should-be lead that Udall has been carrying for much of the final stretch of the campaign. Despite Schaffer’s cash on hand of over $2 Million, with the NRSC pulling out, along with Freedom’s Watch and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the airtime will be slanted toward pro-Udall and anti-Schaffer ads. This does not bode well for Fmr. Congressman Schaffer and Colorado Republican Party Chairman/Schaffer Campaign Manager Dick Wadhams.

Additionally, for those of you who have been wondering how the controversial Amendment 48 has been polling, Rasmussen delivers the fix you’ve been craving (although it incorrectly calls it a proposition, so who knows how accurate it is. Which state do they think we are? California?)

Fifty-five percent (55%) also oppose Proposition 48 [sic], a pro-life amendment that would define any fertilized egg as a person under the state constitution. Thirty-five percent (35%) support it.

Forty-four percent (44%) say life begins at conception, while 21% say it begins at birth. Thirty-one percent (31%) say it’s somewhere in between.

The interesting part is that even though 44% said life begins at conception, only 35% support the amendment. Maybe Bob Schaffer’s stance on the issue isn’t really pandering, since at least some of his ideological peers agree with him.

  1. So now the McCain campaign is betting everything on “Joe the Plumber”: the guy who earns over a quarter million dollars a year and has IRS tax liens against him?

    Sounds like McCain’s vetting has again been less than stellar.

    I understand that experts in security clearance procedures are now saying that Todd Palin would never qualify for a security clearance due to his Alaskan Independence Party – pro-Iranian connections.

    Wow. Things are not looking good for McCain.

        The guy used to have a security clearance, so now he’s an expert ?

        There’s a type of clearance called “SCI,” which stands for Special Compartmentalized Information.”  He renders that as “Sensitive Classified Information.”

            I didn’t follow the part about “2 years after the Iranian incident.”  Todd reportedly joined the separatist group in 1993.  Which specific incident in 1991 are you referring to ?

        Was it the US Navy shooting down a scheduled commercial flight in Iranian airspace, killing 290 civilians ?  That was 1988.

        Was it the “Haliburton” sanctions ?  That was 1995.  

        If you were referring to the Reagan campaign conspiring with the Iranians to keep holding US hostages as a way to hurt Carter’s reelection campaign, that was in 1980.

          If you really was to tar a candidate for their associations with nefarious organizations, go right after her directly.  

          Sarah Palin is currently an active member of what may end up being the most powerful – and last – enemy this nation has ever had, the seditious Republican Party, which not only advocates but is totally dedicated to destroying this country.

          Not overtly, of course.  The rank and file might object if they understood what they are supporting.  But for the last 8 years, the GOP has consistently undermined the Constitution as the basis for our republic.  

          This whole “Unitary ‘imperial’ Presidency” thing is intended to disenfranchise voters and consolidate power in the hands of the elite.  It has been pretty successful.

          I guess you can’t bring that up, though, can you ?

          Your beloved Democratic Party has been their essential silent co-conspirator.  

          Any vote for any candidate of either of the two branches of the Corporatist Party, Rep or Dem,

          is a vote for abandoning the 232-year-old American experiment in democratic governance in favor of whatever it is the elites think would be better.   May you live to rue the day.

          Vogler’s greatest moment of glory was to be his 1993 appearance before the United Nations to denounce United States “tyranny” before the entire world and to demand Alaska’s freedom. The Alaska secessionist had persuaded the government of Iran to sponsor his anti-American harangue.

          By the way I am not arguing the security clearance issue, I just had to find the Iranian connection.

    2. doesn’t earn anywhere near 250K.  He was just hoping to buy the bosses business and make that much some day. Or maybe he might win the lottery or something. Then he’d sure hate to have to pay the same taxes people in that bracket used to pay under the tax structure that served everybody pretty damned well in the Clinton years. Oh and he hates social security. The guy appears to be basically worried about a slightly higher tax rate on his pipe dreams.

      1. He got closer than Gore in 2000 (Bush beat Gore by 9 points here) and we added a Dem Senator and Rep so it was kind of a foretaste of 2006 Dem state and congressional delegation takeover and the direction things seem headed in 2008.

  3. More evidence, along with the registration numbers, that CO is turning blue.  Wish Obama would show up a few more times though and put the state away.
