Stay Classy, Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg

  • by: Colorado Pols
Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg.
Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg.

FRIDAY UPDATE #2: Liberal group ProgressNow Colorado slams Sonnenberg in a statement:

“The right wing’s all-consuming hatred for President Obama is well known, but Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg has taken disrespect for the President too far this time,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “During President Obama’s term in office, our nation has been rocked by horrific mass shootings including the Aurora theater massacre. President Obama has personally met the survivors and victim’s families of Aurora, Newtown, Roseburg, San Bernardino, and other senseless acts of gun violence. I too have met with some of them. The stories of their pain and suffering will bring any decent person to tears.”

“President Obama’s tears for the victims of gun violence in America, including right here in Colorado, are very real, and I’m proud to support a president unafraid of compassion,” said Runyon-Harms. “Thanks to Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, the right wing’s boundless contempt for the President is now an insult to the victims he wept for.”

“Sen. Sonnenberg is a disgrace to the Colorado Senate, and to the victims and survivors of mass shootings that have occurred in our state,” said Runyon-Harms. “We want President Obama and all victims of gun violence to know that Jerry Sonnenberg does not speak for Colorado.”

FRIDAY UPDATE: Daily Kos, responding to our comments below:

It would be encouraging if “any and all decent” constituents of this pathetic excuse for a senator looked him in the eye the next time he shows up on their turf and asked him if he really meant to make a fucking joke out of lubricating an assault rifle with tears induced by pondering the slaughter of 6- and 7-year-olds.

As for those who believe the president manufactured tears to manipulate his audience, perhaps a few of them could be rehabilitated if they read what Joshua Dubois wrote in The President’s Devotional two years ago about Obama’s visit to Sandy Hook just two days after the slayings there left that community raw.

A Tweet earlier this evening from Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, a Republican representing a broad area of the Eastern Plains of Colorado, mocks President Barack Obama’s press conference this week in which he announced executive actions to modestly tighten background checks on gun sales:

obamatears

That President Obama had an emotional moment over the victims of gun violence in America during his presser has made a great deal of news. But a sitting Republican lawmaker responding so crassly to the President’s sympathy for gun violence victims, which we are inclined to believe is genuinely expressed, quite possibly sounds a new bottom in an already acrimonious debate.

We apologize on behalf of any and all decent people he represents.

  1. Grrrrrr. That is beyond poor taste on Sonnenberg's part. He needs to apologize to the Sandy Hook families, and to the President. Of course, he won't, because he thinks that all of his constituents love his "humor". How disrespectful of the dead and those grieving for them.

    1. Mama, can we really be that shocked by anything any of these clowns say or do anymore?

On the same day, Governor Paul LePage, Teabagger from Maine, got in trouble for making comments about heroin dealers invading his state from Connecticut and New York who deal their dope and then "impregnate white girls." (That's got to be news to Donald Trump who told us that the drug dealers come from Mexico with the rapists and murderers.) This was not the first time LePage has made racially offensive comments.

Is Sonnenberg's crack much worse than Raphael Cruz telling Joe Biden jokes within days of the death of Biden's son. Or Sarah Palin posting a bulls-eye on Gabby Giffords on her website.

To answer the question of how much lower these people can go, the answer is simple:  quite a bit much more. In fact, their spiritual leader, the Trump, brushes it off saying that he doesn't have time for political correctness.

Basic decency is now labeled political correctness. They have turned the quest to be the turd in the punch bowl into a Zen-like state to be attained.

      1. In fairness to Trump (and that's saying something about Sonnenberg, I think), he was very kind about it.

“I actually think he was sincere," the Republican presidential front-runner said on "Fox and Friends."  “I'll probably go down about 5 points in the polls by saying that,” he added.

[…]  “It's a thing that he feels — I think he's incorrect about it, they're just taking chunks and chunks out of the Second Amendment, but I think he probably means well,” Trump said Wednesday.

        1. The thing about Trump is, in so many ways he makes no sense as a Republican. He says things and takes positions no other Republican could. He won't drop a point for saying something nice about Obama. Meanwhile, the rest of them, all claiming to be pro-lifers who passionately love every every fertilized egg, are so determined to prove they don't consider Obama to be a human being capable of feelings they all try to outdo each other in showing no feelings at all for murdered children and their parents.

It's a crazy world on the political right these days.

      2. +lots

If I'm shocked these days by how low some of these idiots can go, it's only because I wasn't aware that someone could actually get to that level, not because I can't believe their willingness to go there.

I've been told that many things are possible if you truly reach a Zen state. Perhaps the same is true here…

  2. He's my freaking state Senator, dammit. He had already ticked me off lying about how coal will come back and we shouldn't be lining up with solar and wind.

I'm actually kind of a moderate on guns. Someday, someone will find and post old photos of me or my kids posing at the range with large, unwieldy rifles or shotguns, and I'll have to 'splain things to Colorado Ceasefire.  So I don't care if Sonnenberg is a gun head.

But to  just flat out knowingly misrepresent and lie and mock people's grieving for their children…..I just don't have any polite words, and that doesn't happen often.

    1. "If you find yourself mocking anyone who cries over murdered children, it's Jesus's way of letting you know you're a sociopath"

      ~Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian

      1. John 11 (Lazarus)

30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

        35 Jesus wept.

    2. When you are an unoriginal and arrogant clod, it is impossible to be a real person.  For all their self-righteous piety, they never heard or believed a word of the New Testament.

  3. Obama's Town Hall Meeting was amazing.  He was articulate and polite and amazing.  He took tough questions and answered them honestly.  Did I mention that it was an amazing use of the TV media.  The perfect reply to little, weasel gun worshippers like Sonnenberg.

  4. When I was a little boy, my friends and classmates used to compete like this…

I am sure you all remember those little one-upmanship games…..who would lick the frog?…or…who would kiss Darlene?…who could be the most daring or outrageous..?

This is the competitive nature of hateful little boys on display…

    pitiful…

  5. Hey, Obama's Tears may be the most effective gun control yet! Let 'em spray it. All that saline will corrode the action on their guns! (just trying to make light of a horrible situation…)

  6. they should be happy about O's action………gun sales jumped on the fear that Obama will finally, not during his first 7 years – he saved it for his last year, take everyone's gun. If only………

And of course, even though the order had little affect, and is already in place in some jurisdictions, it was the most egregious power grab in history.

    1. That is so true……you would think that deep down inside, they love him for what he does for gun sales.

It's like the fertilized egg amendments and what those do for Planned Parenthood and NARAL fund-raising.

      1. Ain't that the truth! My guess is Smith & Wesson loves Obama. With the new executive order requiring small time gun sales to get a license, it should come as a bonus for a gun seller – now they get guns a wholesale! Increase profit is a mighty incentive. And the liability is passed on the the ATF/CBI. Its win/win for the small guy for sure.

I wonder if any liability will be passed to the doctor who fails to report a nut job in an effort to not incite the nut from stalking them for "turning him in".

Most concerning to me is the Obama order requiring background checks for trusts for NFA items. I shudder to think what a good attorney can make of an entity attached to a person in trust/corporation uses outside the gun industry. May crack the "shell" so many use those things for.

Awesome town hall meeting though. Obama did very well in my opinion. Should be more discussions like that. Wait, thats why I'm here…..

      1. So now you folks like Boehner? I knew you'd grow to miss him after your nut cases drove him away and realized that Paul Ryan would sell out the tea baggers as well…..

      2. Everyone, both sides of the aisle, agrees that Boehner's habit of bursting into tears over just about anything is kind of humorous. He's never been made fun of for shedding tears over dead children, certainly not by anyone who posts here. That doesn't make us humorless.  Dead children just aren't funny.  On the other hand, suggesting that we just don't get the joke makes you an asshole.

      3. Not only are you defending the indefensible (with some irrelevant false equivalency that is so weak it ought to embarrass even you) but with Sen Sonnenberg having deleted his cruel tweet you appear to be doing so all alone.
