TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► Vigils continued last night locally for the victims of the Orlando, Florida domestic terror attack on a gay nightclub. The Denver Post reported from Cheesman Park:

Rain fell, lightning flashed and umbrellas popped up at Cheesman Park on Monday night as the people who gathered to honor and memorialize those gunned down in Orlando, Fla., stood strong, determined to ride out the storm.

The weather could have been a reason for people to stay home safe and dry. Still, more than a couple of thousand gathered at the pavilion on the north side of the park to denounce violence and hate, with a silent candlelight vigil in wake of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

At a Colorado U.S. Senate forum yesterday, all the Republican candidates managed to avoid the proverbial elephant in the room:

Colorado’s Republican U.S. Senate contenders reacted cautiously Monday as the Orlando nightclub shooter’s motives were being investigated, but they agreed that the debate over policy should be about defeating radical Islam and its recruiting efforts, not about domestic gun control…

“I don’t believe gun control is the answer here,” Aurora businessman Ryan Frazier said. “I don’t believe any gun measure, any law, would have prevented this type of attack. This is fundamentally a question of domestic terrorism.”

► Meanwhile, Aurora shooting victims and survivors are finding they have insight to offer in Florida, including Democratic Senate candidate and Aurora family member Tom Sullivan.

► Oh yeah, and GOP nominee Donald Trump managed to outrage just about everybody once again.

► Trump is coming to Denver for the Western Conservative Summit at Colorado Christian University. Rumors that this my coincide with the return of Jesus Christ to throw the moneychangers from the temple have not been confirmed, but it’s possible.

► The troubled delegation selection process at the Republican state convention this year is being challenged in court–not that anything can affect Trump’s nomination, of course.

► Democratic House candidate and Aurora Public Schools board member Eric Nelson is apparently an amazing con artist, but with this morning’s devastating story in the Colorado Statesman from Ernest Luning, the game of “Catch Me If You Can” appears to be over.

► Also in the Statesman today, a profile of the fascinating race to replace Sen. Bill Cadman between Bob “Bobbing” Gardner and Gordon “Dr. Chaps” Klingenschmitt.

► For all the GOP-engineered hullabaloo over the Animas River spill last August, the Superfund plan to clean up the mess isn’t getting much attention.

► Ready to talk about fracking? You’ll be talking about it a lot this year, says millions and millions of industry dollars.

► To caucus or not to caucus? That’s the question, and even after this year’s caucus debacles for both parties the question appears far from answered.
