What you can do to fight back this week (June 5)

Last week, Trump announced that our nation will abandon the historic 195-country Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change. Trump’s speech justifying this decision has been ridiculed worldwide for having no basis in reality.

Then in Colorado, the truth struck back. Gov. John Hickenlooper condemned the decision to abandon the Paris Agreement, declaring that “Colorado’s commitment to clean air and clean energy will continue.” Mayors from across the state announced their intentions to disregard the Trump administration’s decision and press ahead with doing their part to meet emission reduction targets.

Saturday, thousands of Coloradans gathered in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and other cities for the March for Truth. After Trump’s fact-free excuses for turning his back on the rest of the world, the resistance in Colorado stood shoulder to shoulder with progressive leaders in solidarity to stand up for truth and reason against the greatest threat the industrialized world has ever faced.

History will condemn Trump’s abandonment of the rest of the world on climate change, and history will also remember your resistance. Standing up for what’s right every time, even in the face of short-term frustration, is how we will outlast Trump’s ignorance and undo his decisions once he is gone. Everything you are doing to fight back right now is critical for our nation’s—and planet’s—future.

Featured Event: Resist Forward Summit

Sensing a growing hunger for unity, organization and finding common goals within Denver’s progressive community, Dr. Timothy Tyler, Pastor at Denver’s iconic Shorter Community AME Church, has stepped forward to organize “Resist Forward Summit,” a first-of-its-kind event, all day Saturday, June 10, at Shorter AME. Indivisible Denver has joined Dr. Tyler in spearheading the Summit, which will bring together more than 25 diverse organizations working for social and economic justice and progressive causes. We’ll learn from each other, share tools, empower new activists, build consensus and send a strong, unified message to our community, state and national leaders.

Pints for a Cause – EnviroHub

June 5th also happens to be world environmental day, and in celebration EnviroHub has invited Solar City to come and talk about solar energy, and also local band Emma Mayes & the HIP to play some funky tunes. This is going to be an all around fantatsic world environmental day event with BEER, LIVE MUSIC, and a chance to learn more about RECYCLING and CLEAN ENERGY!

Vigil Commemorating the MS St. Louis

Join communities across the country participating in vigils to commemorate the tragedy of the St. Louis’ Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, to demonstrate the tragic consequences of denying safe haven to refugees, and to stand together to call on our elected officials and citizens of the world not to repeat the mistakes of our past.

Unpacking Islamophobia

Join us for an open and honest conversation about Islam with a focus on dispelling myths and stereotypes associated with the religion. We will have a panel of local area Muslims who are generously sharing their time and energy in order to help promote peace in our country.

Women’s Equality in Trail Running Panel Discussion & Podcast

Women’s equality in MUT (mountain-ultra-trail) running has been discussed for years, but over the past few months it seems like the discussion has expanded as more light is shed on the topic. We believe this is a discussion worth continuing. After giving it some thought it was decided that one of the best ways to do this was to actually get people sitting down together to talk about the issues surrounding the topic. The panel includes elite runners Cat Bradley, Clare Gallagher, Gina Lucrezi, Silke Koester, Ryan Smith, and Sage Canaday. For those of you in Boulder or the surrounding area we’d love for you to come join us for the live discussion which will start at 6:45pm.

June 7th Lunch Program: Protecting civil rights in Colorado

DWBC will host programs throughout the summer, rather than taking our traditional break! In June, we will focus on protecting civil rights in Colorado. We will welcome Denise Maes, public policy director of the ACLU of Colorado. Maes is a policy and litigation strategist, who has served as General Counsel in the Office of Administration for President Barack Obama and directed budget and finance efforts for the Office of Vice President Joseph Biden. The event will also feature state legislators Steve Fenberg, Edie Hooton, and Jonathan Singer, who will explore the topics of civil rights and criminal justice.

Raising Little Heroes

Join us to assemble “Kits for Kids” with Project C.U.R.E. These personal hygiene and basic “medicine cabinet” backpacks will be sent to areas around the developing world where these items are scarce. Children will learn about the Kits for Kids program, see where these kits will go, and learn why they are so valuable.

Know Your Health, Know Your Rights Workshop Colorado Springs

We know lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Coloradans and their families face unique physical and mental health barriers. One Colorado is hosting an event in Colorado Springs to dig deeper into the landscape of LGBTQ health in the state, provide tools for self-advocacy in health care settings, and engage with community members to learn more about local issues in accessing care.

Puppy Mill Free Colorado

Come join a passionate group of animal lovers and animal welfare advocates educate people about pet stores that sell dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, and their connection to the puppy mill industry. The group will meet at the Briargate entrance to the mall, near Steak ‘N Shake and Jimmy John’s. We’ll have extra signs, so just come and join us!

Equality March for Unity and Pride – Denver

Please join us in Denver in worldwide unity with the LGBTQ+ community on June 11th at 9am at Cheesman Park. We will begin marching at 10am and return to Cheesman Park for a good old-fashioned community picnic until around 2pm. This will be a great opportunity to meet new folks and make connections all the while proclaiming that we demand Equal Rights and Social Justice for ALL PEOPLE!
