What you can do to fight back this week (June 26)

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

For the third time since Donald Trump took office, Republicans in Washington are preparing for a vote on a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take away health coverage from millions of Americans. Once again the progress our nation has made on health coverage is in danger, but something’s different this time around.

Your resistance has brought the entire effort to repeal health care reform to the brink of failure. Today, the public is overwhelmingly opposed to the repeal of Obamacare, and the campaign promise Republicans made seven years ago is now a liability. Even Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, who made the repeal of Obamacare the focus of his campaigns for Congress and the U.S. Senate, is now wavering on support for the newest repeal bill.

It’s critical that Sen. Gardner understand both the political and the humanitarian consequences of this vote. Politically, the campaign to repeal Obamacare has outlived its usefulness to the far right. Morally, Gardner must not vote for a bill that would take away health coverage from thousands of Coloradans and millions of Americans.

Priority #1 this week: call Sen. Gardner now at 844-432-0883 and tell him he must oppose the latest version of Trumpcare. If you’ve called Sen. Gardner before, please call again. It is increasingly likely that Republicans will abandon the repeal of Obamacare if they cannot pass this bill, so this could be the most important phone call to Gardner ever.

Thanks. Here are more ways to take action for the week of June 26th:

Vigil to save the Affordable Care Act

Let’s gather on Tuesday for a vigil to honor the 23 million Americans who will lose their health insurance, as well as the more than 2.2 million Coloradans with pre-existing conditions, if Senator Gardner votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Bring flowers, candles, signs, and any personal letters you would like to contribute to the display.

Where: Skyline Park, 1125 17th St, Denver
When: Tuesday, June 27 at 12:00pm

Dog Whistle Politics: A Community Dialogue

Join the NE Denver Community to view a presentation and have an in-depth conversation about “Dogwhistle Politics”, a term for coded racism and how this affects the NE Denver community. In the video we will watch, Ian Haney López, JD, the Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at University of California, Berkeley, discuss how politicians have used coded language and racial bias to create laws and policies that reinforce racism. This has led to inequity and poor health outcomes for people of color across the United States.

Where: Christ Lutheran Church, 3460 Humboldt Street, Denver
When: Tuesday, June 27 at 5:00pm

One Colorado Call Night

Join us at the One Colorado office to call our supporters about LGBTQ equality! We will have snacks and drinks for you. If you have a have a laptop and/or phone, feel free to bring it along with you — otherwise, we will have some available!

Where: One Colorado, 1490 Lafayette St, Ste 304, Denver
When: Tuesday, June 27 at 6:00pm

Colorado! Join The Paris Climate Agreement!

After Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement, 12 governors across the nation joined what is now called the US Climate Alliance — a state partnership to keep meeting the goals of the Paris deal, and push the US forward on climate action. We’re calling on Colorado Governor Hickenlooper to join them. With Trump sending us backwards, Colorado must #ActOnClimate so that we can protect our communities from bigger forest fires and floods, and build a renewable energy economy that will provide jobs without the pollution of oil and gas. Please tell Governor Hickelooper to #ActOnClimate by calling (303) 866-2471 EVERY DAY from June 28-July 6.

Senator Gardner: Our Healthcare Need over Millionaire Greed

With under a day before the Senate takes a vote on the healthcare bill, it is vital that we continue to make our voices heard. It is unacceptable for Cory Gardner to vote for a bill which would take away quality, affordable health coverage from hundreds of thousands of working Colorado families, eliminate protections for 1 in 2 people with pre-existing conditions, and slash Medicaid, directly impacting children, seniors, disabled and veterans. All this would have the additional effect of destabilizing the private market, even for those with employer-provided coverage.

When: Wednesday, June 28 at 11:00am

Standing Up for Health Care: Candlelight Vigil

Join your fellow CO citizens for a candlelight vigil at the State Capitol to stand in solidarity with those whose health care is at risk, and to protest this cruel and heartless bill. We will send the message that this bill does not represent us and that we will tirelessly defend our vision of an America that takes care of its most vulnerable. We’ll gather at 8 p.m. on the west steps of the Capitol and will proceed to Skyline Park, just outside of Sen. Cory Gardner’s office. (We will have vigil candles to distribute, but you can also help the cause by bringing some of your own.)

Where: Colorado State Capitol, 200 East Colfax, Denver
When: Wednesday, June 28 at 8:00pm

Rally For Healthcare At Senator Gardner’s Colorado Springs Office

Please join COS CAN and concerned Colorado citizens for a protest outside Senator Gardner’s office. The staff will not be in the office on this day so this is strictly an outside event! The disastrous healthcare bill that was shoved through the house is now facing a vote the beginning of July by the senate. This bill is not going through committe hearings nor is it being made available for the public to read. We can not stay silent while this mess occurs so please bring your signs and your voices!

Where: 102 S Tejon St, Colorado Springs
When: Thursday, June 29 at 11:00am

Impeachment March – Denver

There are a number of cases that can be brought against Trump for impeachment, however, the greatest injustice of his administration has been the systematic attack upon the inalienable rights of the American people, and the ultimately, the sheer disrespect and disregard he has shown for our Constitution.

Where: Civic Center Park, Denver
When: Sunday, July 2 at 11:00am

After Trump was elected, we all knew we would be part of the resistance against his agenda. What we could not have known, however, is how effective the resistance would be. There’s a reason why Trump and the Republican-dominated Congress have accomplished so little since taking office, and are now in danger of losing the momentum entirely with the 2018 elections fast approaching.

The reason is you. Your work to resist Trump’s agenda is succeeding—and giving hope to the whole nation. Thanks again, and we’ll see you next week with more ways to fight back.
