McConnell Bows To Inevitable--Trumpcare Vote Delayed

CNN reporting, so much for that:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will delay the vote on the Republican leadership’s health care bill until after the July 4 recess, two sources told CNN.

McConnell told GOP senators that he wants to make changes to the bill, get a new Congressional Budget Office score and have a vote after the holiday.

A White House official and a GOP aide on the Hill told CNN that White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and Vice President Mike Pence invited all Republican senators to White House on Tuesday afternoon.

Republican leadership, along with Pence, had sought earlier to woo members of their own party into supporting the fragile health care bill behind closed doors Tuesday, as a fifth senator came out against voting for a procedural step to advance their plans to repeal and replace Obamacare.

We’re awaiting President Donald Trump’s Twitter freakout! Stand by for reax from Colorado electeds–many of whom we expect are breathing a sigh of relief, even if they can’t say so. At the top of that list may or may not be Sen. Cory Gardner, who now should have plenty of time to meet with his constituents back home to justify the bill he waxed positive about with the Denver Post’s Mark Matthews yesterday:

Gardner spoke more positively than not about the measure in a brief interview Monday on Capitol Hill.

“Over the weekend I had conversations with CEOs (including at least one official at) Blue Cross Blue Shield, who said their support for the bill is robust,” Gardner said of the health insurance giant… [Pols emphasis]

The degree to which Gardner is a true swing vote on the legislation, however, is a matter of debate.

The first-term senator was among 13 Senate Republicans tapped to help craft the bill — though Gardner contends he didn’t see the full text until last Thursday. His position as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee also puts him in the upper tier of GOP leadership and close to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who took the lead in writing the legislation.

Back at the ranch as our readers know, support for the bill is not “robust,” and that is the reason why the vote scheduled for this week has now been unceremoniously cancelled. What changes to the bill that may be forthcoming before the next attempt at a vote are of course unknown, but the simultaneous need to satisfy conservatives who say the bill doesn’t cut enough and politically vulnerable “moderates” who say it cuts too much doesn’t bode well. In fact, it never did.

We are watching the #1 agenda item of the party now in complete control of the federal government, not to mention the stated top priority of Colorado’s highest-ranking Republican lawmaker, crash and burn.

      Mitch, Marco, Ted, Rand, Cory, et al, will awaken and see the next "right thing" as being the elimination of the CBO, or eliminating the need for CBO scoring unless a senate majority deems it necessary, or some other "right thing" shenanigans to eliminate pesky fact-based projections from hindering their (sole) tax-cuts-for-the-wealthy objectives!

  4. Apparently, McConnell's warning to his caucus yesterday that if they don't support the bill, they'd all get cooties didn't impress:

    McConnell warns Trump, GOP on health bill failure.  If Obamacare repeal fails in the Senate, the GOP might be forced to compromise with Democrats.

  6. Axios reports that the GOP is needing to persuade 11 GOP Senators to support the bill.  Cory Gardner is not on that list.  Looks like Gardner is on board with the Wealthcare Bill.  Good luck with that.

    1. Doesn't it just make you proud?  Cory supported a bill he 

      says he hadn't read and couldn't have enough to understand it in the short time between saying so and his bitching about people having a knee-jerk reaction to it.

      He also claims to have not read the bill even though he was part of the death panel, er, I mean working group tasked with crafting said bill. 

    1. Today, hard working Americans won!!  Today, Two Scoops, Mitch McConnell, Cory Gardner, Moldy and Carnholio lost.

      Don't know about you, V, but I'm all about that kind of winning.

    1. I believe it is also going to happen as you explained but then the Holy Jesus What Did We Do blowback is going to begin.  Since I expect it to pass in some kind of bastardized form, I hope Gardner votes for it and lets everyone know what a not moderate he is. 

          1. At this rate, by 2020 Cory the coward will be left with Moldy and Cornholio.  Everybody else will have 20/20 vision when it comes to the con man of CO.

        2. Gardner has time to talk with insurance company CEO's behind closed doors, then walks out into the sunlight to inform us they support the Senate healthcare bill, but he still won't meet with his constituents here in Colorado in face-to-face town hall meetings. Why? We have an absolute right to have a say in what he is going to do to 20% of our economy and how we receive healthcare and at what level in the future. Its my health and your health he is deciding. Without our health and the ability to get medical treatment when our health fails, life becomes miserable.

          Gardner is a coward and an elitist. He doesn't have the courage to face us and he is patting us on the head and telling us not to worry because he will take care of all of us in closed door meetings we can't attend. 

  9. Three more have jumped ship….

    Since Yertle pulled the bill after lunch today, three more GOP senators have come out against: Portman, Capito, and Moran. I expected Portman and Capito to oppose it but Moran was a complete surprise.

    If you're keeping score at home, there are now 46 Dems, two indies, and seven Republicans opposed (Heller, Collins, Johnson, RuPaul, Capito, Portman and Moran). And sightings of Cory Gardner.

When all is said and done, after all the bribes and buy-offs and supposed "softening" to get votes, will any one of the GOP senators supposedly against the bill right now have the guts to be the deciding vote to kill the bill? For example, while "moderate" Susan Collins has occasionally been a no vote when it was safe, has she ever been the one deciding vote against the Republican position? I can't think of a time when they really needed her vote that she didn't fold.

    If there is a large enough group against, maybe they can support each other enough to hang on, but I don't think any one of them has the strength to be the one last deciding vote. (Two can hold out and not kill the bill. It is that third no vote that will be hard to get to stand firm.)

    1. Having more than three stick together in opposition is kind of like giving that one blank to one member of the firing squad? You can go through the rest of your life telling yourself and other people that you might not have been the one who killed it.

  11. If they're seven votes down now, I won't be surprised if that number grows over this week when the Congress is supposed to be home among their people. I imagine they'll be buttonholed everywhere they go by people reminding them that their 2018 election chances are closely tied to this vote.

    1. Probably McConnell was thinking the same. "Get'er done now, before the indictments start coming, and the home folks start protesting at the 4th of July picnics".

        Can you imagine Harry Reid, or Bob Dole, or Andrew Cornholio's friend, Robert Byrd, or LBJ screwing up like this?
