Cleve Tidwell: Riddle Wrapped in an Enigma Inside a Goose Egg

International candidate of mystery Cleve Tidwell — that’s right, the one who enlisted an Indonesian bulletin board to stuff the vote on a straw poll — puts an enigmatic spin on his lack of fundraising numbers for the 2nd quarter.

Wielding his Twitter like a true 21st Century Republican, Tidwell informs the masses:

Yes I did file to run for office May 7th with the Federal Election Committee I took it to Washington personal! just no fund raising till July 1

A poll follows.

Not to worry. Tidwell’s site informs “volunteers and supporters” that the campaign is “now beginning what I call ‘Phase 2’,” or what everyone else would call some semblance of an actual campaign.

First fundraiser? The “Shootout with the Candidate” Fundraiser in Colorado Springs earlier this week. Since only 12 armed contributors had RSVP’d before the fundraiser, and tickets maxed out at $18, it’s probably a safe bet the Tidwell Machine is going to take its time breaking four digits.

With zero funds raised last quarter, Tidwell brings up the rear of his fellow GOP candidates, but not by much. Weldco DA Ken Buck scores biggest with $330,000 raised, followed by Aurora Councilman Ryan Frazier with $140,000 (h/t Jessica Fender at Politics West).

Appointed incumbent Michael Bennet, Fender notes, has actually spent more since January than his Republican challengers have raised. And that’s after raising a total $2,600,000 in two quarters.

Of course an incumbent is going to blow away potential challengers — though doesn’t Tidwell look ready to blow away any intruders? — especially a full year before nominating conventions, but this is ridiculous. But not as ridiculous as Tidwell’s Folly.

    1. than the Tidwell supporters who got the Indonesians involved in a crucial online straw poll earlier this year. (You thought I was kidding about Tidwell’s Indonesian base?)

      This was back when Tidwell was running for governor, and before his campaign’s alter ego, Craig Platon, became so notorious even The Denver Post had to get involved.

      Scolded Rocky Mountain Right:

      This poll has been taken offline after upwards of 200 votes were logged from Indonesian IP addresses on behalf of Cleve Tidwell. Apparently my warning went unheeded since the perpetrators may or may not have been able to speak English and may not have understood it. They ended up doing exactly what I didn’t want them to, and that was to spam the hell out of the poll and then plaster the results everywhere claiming it was a great show of “grassroots support.”

      When the site called out the Indonesian interlopers, “[t]hen came the rambling, poorly-spelled comments about Cleve,” which eventually led to the unmasking of the Tidwell sock puppets.

  8. is raising more bucks than Frazier, but, Cleve may pull just enough votes away from Buck to squeek out a Frazier victory on the GOP side?

    At the very least Cleve makes this GOP race fun.  

          2. I must be easily amused or something. Your “Indonesia” remark really made me laugh.

            On a serious note. How many valid sigs would a statewide Senate candidate need to get on the ballot?

                The required number of signatures for US Senate is equal to 1,500 signatures per congressional district.  For more information on signature requirements, please see section 1-4-801, C.R.S.

    3. but the “pulling” votes away could play at the assembly. If Bucko and Cleve somehow split “their” votes, then Frazier could be the only one on the ballot and they’d have to petition. We all saw what happened last time. But hey, Coffman did it and he’s in Congress now.

      1. what happened last time? Not sure what you are referring to. I don’t recall what happened in CD6 assembly and primary other than Coffman winning. Didn’t follow that race much. I was too busy gathering sigs for Will Shafroth.
